geekIT: And Trump wants to buy Greenland. With what? The infrastructure fund? If there is such a thing.

The reason why a lot of US infrastructure is so run down is because maintenance is the first thing you cut when times are tough.  The US has been doing this for the last 15-20 years to hide the state of their financials.  Another example is food in restaurants where you don't raise prices but drop the quality and/or quantity, there's a web site somewhere that shows true inflation figures based on grocery prices vs. doctored government ones based on items cherry-picked to look less bad than they are (both sides have been doing this, it's not party-specific).

The last time I saw an estimated figure published for the accumulated backlog of deferred infrastructure maintenance work it was 1.2 trillion dollars.  That's trillion with a 't', not billion.  So a nominal US infrastructure fund would have a balance of $-1,200,000,000,000.

Well, with MAGA fan merch and appeals for donations. If that doesn't help, the military costs money, regardless of whether they're polishing boots in the barracks or occupying Greenland. 😁

Denmark supports half of the costs of running Greenland and I suspect that EU also pitches in funds.
GOP and Trumplicans not known to be spendy.
There is the large USA strategic bomber airbase and apparently there was an ooopsie with nukes.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1968_Thule_Air_Base_B-52_crash

""
The aircraft was carrying four B28FI thermonuclear bombs on a Cold War "Chrome Dome" alert mission over Baffin Bay when a cabin fire forced the crew to abandon the aircraft
""
The bomber crashed onto sea ice in North Star Bay,[a] Greenland, causing the conventional explosives aboard to detonate and the nuclear payload to rupture and disperse, resulting in radioactive contamination of the area.
""

Denmark did give USA rights to operate in Greenland for their strategic defense.

Edit... Correction on the nuclear policy, ... My misunderstanding.
Denmark kinda had an unofficial don't ask policy on nukes being 'nuclear free', and accident created a political issue.

Big reductions in base operations have occurred due to large cost of operating from there.
Even Russia puts more money into Ballistic Missile development these days ?

I mean Trump sees Russia as No1 friend so why would USA need to massively scale up a base that watches over Russia.

Quietly sidelining their non nuclear policy. So that has already been covered for many decades.

More a case of USA budget better spent elsewhere as mass strategic bombers faded in importance.

„Strategic defence interests“ are just another Trump words for exploiting Greenland's natural resources and cashing in.

What's the betting on disruptions at the coronation?

Security agencies are definitely erring on the side of caution:

Because the USA also likes to monitor its friends (even the real ones).

LOL

“Trump intentionally imitating his mugshot in his inauguration portrait is quite a flourish,” one person wrote, with another commenting, “This is Trump’s official portrait, and it’s giving off Bond villain vibes soooo bad #TrumpIsAConvictedFelon.”

A few of this week's Trump-related cartoons:

Referring to the Bannon-Musk clash:

Senate confirmations (and some of the orange buffoon's more terrible picks - I can't wait for them to get to RFK Jr):

Facebook/Meta/whatever the hell they're called stopping fact-checking in the wake of Trump's return (also looks like Richard from Silicon Valley!):

Who's really driving the orange buffoon? I think we all know...

And finally, the weather for the next 4 years:

But he’s still tough. Look at that glower! Look at the uplighting. We’ve seen Trump in this position before and not just as he was being hauled into the hoosegow. This is the face of the man who starred as Mr. Trump on NBC for a decade-plus. He’s the man in the middle of the table, getting ready to utter “You’re fired.” We all thought Trump I was silly. With Trump II we get Fox News hosts injected into the organs of government. We have Elon as our guest judge. We ain’t seen nothin’ yet.
