I posted a while back that I support Trump following all his pledges/promises/dictatorships  Qualified that so I dont get banned.

I still hope he does. The right is no issue, neither is the left, the voters will choose. But the Alt-right, or more to the point the ALT-RIGHT of Trump is ridiculous if not bizarre. But he has been given the power and he will screw it up as I read each day. The only positive from the daily negatives is that the public will see the error of their ways and vote for normal public servants that serve us in the future.

Elon Musk Has Reportedly Been “Iced Out” Of Trump’s White House Already

The Ring of Fire

"Reports are suggesting that the honeymoon with Donald Trump and Elon Musk is beyond over with, and Musk will be denied a permanent office in The West Wing alongside Trump. It is unclear where, exactly, Musk is going to be operating, but he will likely be kept away from Trump as much as possible. The reports say that this decision came from the “Ice Queen” Susie Wiles, who is serving as Trump’s Chief of Staff, but no decisions are made without Trump’s prior approval (or direction.) Ring of Fire’s Farron Cousins explains what happened."

Not necessarily a bad thing for Musk, if he's away from Mein Foo-rah's constant meddling.

SaltyNZ: Let me guess, and then Mike Schumer votes in favour of the ICE raids anyway?

It is frustrating that Schumer and as some of the right-leaning members of his caucus are trying to show they can work with the new president.

Trump will never support them, and treats any compromise as weakness. Hence his bromance with various dictators.

Many thought Hitler could be controlled once in office, such as centrist and liberal parties like the German People's Party (DVP) and the German State Party (DStP)

Former Chancellor Franz von Papen (a Catholic conservative), pushed for Hitler’s appointment as Chancellor in January 1933, thinking he could manipulate him.

Some liberal-leaning politicians also hesitated to fully oppose Hitler, hoping he would govern moderately.

We saw how well that worked out.

That operates on the basis there will be fair and open elections again. The last time Trump was in, his team worked pretty hard to rig and suppress votes that would prevent him from winning in 2020. There is suspicion that 2024 wasn't even on the up-and-up - I don't subscribe to conspiracy theories, but some of his comments lead me to believe it was a mistake not to at least investigate to prove that they were just dumb comments.

Prior to the 2024 election, 4.7 million voters were purged from the rolls and could not vote. You can guess what colour the counties are where those purges were targeted - the MAGA agenda went pretty hard to get their people onto election commissions across the nation. Even if there are elections, I have no doubt the rules will be twisted to suit the Trumpian agenda. He and his people are already working on dismantling the term limit (currently, it's just performative, but I'd be unsurprised if a serious effort was being worked on at Heritage Foundation's head office).

Remember, everything a certain 1930s Weimar Chancellor did was within the bounds of the Constitution of the Weimar Republic as well until democracy was well and truly dismantled. Which took 56 days. This article in the Atlantic describing how it happened is fantastic: https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2025/01/hitler-germany-constitution-authoritarianism/681233/?utm_source=apple_news (or if you have Apple News+: https://apple.news/Ageef1_SCRqO7E9DoQIs3ng)

One thing that should frighten anyone - Guantanamo Bay is sovereign territory of Cuba. The Constitution of the United States of America does not apply there. This means that, legally, the deportees will only have whatever rights Trump and Homan want to give them, which will be none. People should be outraged about this development, but a third of the country voted for it because they're just that bigoted and hateful. It's incredibly dismaying and disappointing.

The term limit thing is dead in the water before it goes anywhere - as I posted on the other page, it needs something like 60% of both chambers to agree to it, and it needs to be ratified by 38 states or something.

Republicans hold both chambers, yes, but I reckon there's no way in hell any Democrat in either chamber (or a Democratic governor) would ever let that pass.

Also re Karoline Leavitt - no surprise to see her lying and deflecting, I mean, really, just look who she works for:

https://www.thebulwark.com/i/156009858/quick-hits

At the first press briefing of the new administration, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt explained that the price of eggs remains high—and is rising—because “the Biden administration and the Department of Agriculture directed the mass killing of more than 100 million chickens, which has led to a lack of chicken supply in this country, therefore lack of egg supply, which is leading to the shortage.”

It’s not surprising that she assigned blame to the previous administration. But her accusation has us wondering: Does the current White House believe that our health inspectors should be laxer in letting avian flu—the reason flocks were culled—run rampant? A lil’ roll of the dice with our nuggets? Earlier this month, a person in Louisiana died of avian flu, indicating the risk of transmission from birds to people. But it’s not surprising to see someone from Trump world blame the cure rather than the disease.

It only needs that if everyone involved agree to abide by the law.

In this case, we have Trump, who believes (with good reason) that the law does not apply to him, who is stacking all the critical posts with people who will do whatever he wants whether it's legal or not.

It would be dangerously naive to assume Trump's chances of a third term are zero just because the law says he can't have one unless he follows a procedure you think won't work.

Oh I'm fully aware of that. But he can't stack up everyone everywhere - he can't just replace Democratic governors (for example) with ones who kiss his boots.

I guess I'm just optimistic that there are going to be enough people to stand up to him and tell him he can't run again to make it not happen.
