"If prices go up, it's because of other people's reactions to America's laws," Trump's homeland secretary, Kristi Noem.

You'll remember the former presidential candidate and former South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem’s wrote a book where she describe a female puppy had needed training to hunt pheasant. The young untrained dog was “out of her mind with excitement, chasing all those birds and having the time of her life.”

After the outing, she stopped to talk with a local family, and Cricket, apparently not secured in Noem’s truck, escaped and headed for the family’s chickens. Chaos and chicken death ensued.

“I hated that dog,” Noem recounts in the book, finding young Cricket “untrainable,” “dangerous to anyone she came in contact with” and “less than worthless … as a hunting dog.” She led the puppy to a gravel pit where the dog was executed.

She quickly followed up by killing a male goat she viewed as “nasty and mean,” because it wasn’t castrated (again, whose fault was that?), and who chased the kids and smelled “disgusting, musky, rancid.”

The NY Times - Canada Follows Mexico in Reaching Deal to Delay Trump Tariffs

breaking

President Trump and the leaders of Mexico and Canada struck last-minute deals on Monday to postpone the imposition of hefty tariffs on goods exported to the United States, averting at least temporarily a damaging trade war that would roil North America and the global economy.

Canada’s prime minister, Justin Trudeau, after speaking twice by telephone with Mr. Trump, said U.S. tariffs on his country’s goods would be postponed by 30 days as negotiations on a border deal took place.

That announcement came hours after Mexico negotiated a similar delay, agreeing to send thousands of troops to the U.S.-Mexico border.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/world-news/360569040/trump-halts-tariffs-mexico-it-rushes-troops-border

Seems he is using tariffs as a threat to get his neighbours to fix the immigration/fentanyl problems

He seems to see fentanyl as being exported to the US, its just as much IMPORTED into the US. Immigration pretty much the same. The US is the customer for immigrants and fentanyl, perhaps he should do his 1/2 share by fixing the US end, and Mexico and Canada can do their 1/2 on their side. But Trump prefers the full share of blame to be moved away

The sooner that tariff "threatees" work on diversifying their exports and imports, with like minded trading partner countries, the better

Yeah, "fix" the "problem". But now they've given him an inch, he'll be back with more demands.

100%, they have unleashed what was already unleashing. At least behind the scenes, marketing peeps will be quietly diverting away from US for exports and imports as best they can. Too many eggs slash baskets rarely works

Trump announces 30-day pause on US tariffs on Canada 50mins ago

following on from:

Trump says he agreed to "immediately pause" anticipated tariffs on Mexico for one month 7 hrs ago

Are we seeing cracks in his dump/stupid rhetoric, or are more sensible heads persuading him concerning the long term damage this will cause ?? We will properly only know post presidency from all the whistle-blowers. Book deals.

Whilst the difficult we can do immediately, the impossible takes a bit longer. However, miracles you will have to wait for.

Perhaps TechBros are so keen on supporting Trump as much of their business being digital.
They can speculate on financial instruments that earn profit going down as well as up.
Trade wars don't worry them them as they don't directly handle physical goods.

Hedgefunds can make money having inside running on companies that will have stocks go down with these tariffs.
If you have a low latency connection your autotrader needs fluctuations to maximize return.

For further win win those tariffs that don't hurt them directly, can be a bargaining chip to relax other countries regulations.
Allow your investment firms to buy other countries companies and assets more easily.

Plus 'second breakfast', in that with all the Trump on again off again, creates more opportunity to speculation on financial markets.

Rinse and repeat.

Most people will know of my utter disdain for Trump.

Having said that, fair is fair.

His move to impose tarrifs, when the real aim was to have Mexico and Canada effectively stand up a human wall, paid for by them, was extremely smart.

The entire 'if you want a rabbit, ask your parents for a horse' has worked really well.

Illegal Immigrants and in particular Phentonyal are serious issues inside the US, he has done something to address both within 2 weeks of taking office. Right or wrong, his America first policy is going to be the way it is, and many voters will applaud it.

I wasn't expecting that to be the outcome, but credit where credit is due, it's a pretty smart tactical move.

The market for fentanyl is very well established in USA. The suction power of that established market is immense, and fentanyl is very very concentrated making it easy to transport.

In any case, the sudden pivot to say the tariffs are really about fentanyl that is good PR work,

after crashing the markets first.. 📉

I'd like the net result of this fiasco to be the cessatino of using the USD as the global yardstick and main trading currency.
Change it to the Euro or Thai Baht for all I care, but tank their economy and destroy what tiny shred of credibility his buffoonery has left and it would be such a great outcome.

But we know that the first country to suggest it will be invaded - look at Kuwait.

Trump has just shut down USAID, one of the few genuinely good things the US government actually does.

SaltyNZ: Yeah, "fix" the "problem". But now they've given him an inch, he'll be back with more demands.

It depends which sort of "Peace in our time" it is.  Historians will never stop debating this, but in 1938 Germany had a strong, experienced (via the Condor Legion), motivated military while Britain had an under-<everything the military needs> that was mostly set up for "pacifying" rebellious tribesmen.  Buying off Hitler gave them two years for a crash rearmament, recruitment, and training program that they otherwise wouldn't have had.  Depending on which historian you listen to, Chamberlain was well aware that his public show was just that, the equivalent of saying "nice doggy" while you cast about for a big stick.  In particular if you look at the industrial building program at that time they were busy building vast underground bunkers, manufacturing facilities, storage depots, and so on, and planning to disperse industry to make it a harder target, years before Germany did the same.  You don't spend staggering amounts of money on that if you think peace has broken out.

Hopefully Canada and Mexico's political analysts and advisers have pushed the leaders in this direction as well.  We'll see in 30 days or so.

What you are saying does make a lot of sense. However, Trump assumes the problems are caused by Mexico and Canada. Both of those countries do things to combat fentanyl and immigration exports. What does the US do to combat fentanyl and immigration imports? As while its Mexico/Canada's "fault" that these two issues flow into the US, its also up to the US to combat them at the border.

Yes, he is and has always has been a marketing genius, albeit with pseudo force rather than the art of the deal
