Not entirely unthinkable, they already share a land border.

Hans Island?

Technically speaking, yes. In the same way that Tasmania shares a land border with Victoria.

Do not fear your enemies. The worst thing they can do to you is kill you.
Do not fear your friends. The worst thing they can do to you is to betray you.
Fear the indifferent. Because their silence makes betrayal and murder possible.

NFL Removes ‘End Racism’ From Super Bowl Field Amid Trump’s War on DEI: Rolling Stones

For the first time since February 2021, the “End Racism” message stencil will not appear across the end zone of the Super Bowl.

Instead, “Choose Love” will be featured along one of the end zones at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans for Super Bowl LIX on Sunday. The other end zone will display “It Takes All of Us,” as it has since the NFL began incorporating field stencils for the league’s Inspire Change initiative in 2020.
...
President Donald Trump is expected to attend Sunday’s game, a White House official told CNN, which will make him the first sitting US president to attend a Super Bowl. The news of the NFL nixing the “End Racism” stencil from this year’s game comes amid Trump’s war against against diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs within the federal government. One of Trump’s first acts in his second term as president was to sign an executive order shutting down federal DEI policies and “encouraging the private sector to end” what the order claims are “illegal DEI discrimination and preferences.”

Major corporations have begun to rollback their DEI initiatives in response to conservative backlash and lawsuits from right-wing groups
...
Walmart confirmed that it would not be renewing a racial equity center and would no longer consider race and gender to improve diversity when granting supplier contracts. Following the announcement, Amazon, Meta, McDonald’s, and Target joined the stampede of mega corps retreating from their DEI programs.

Meanwhile, others like Apple, Costco and Microsoft have defended their practices and pushed back against the anti-DEI movement.

This is a political topic. With this thread, IMHO, it really isn't. There are many left centre people globally, and centre right. There are far right such as Seymour, but thats pretty diluted when you look at the Alt Right extremists. Trump, Putin, al-Hassad, Hitler, and many others . They are not politicians they are dictators.

Trump, as POTUS is "just" the CEO. He is bound by the Constitution, and Statutes. As we are in NZ. Bound by Statutes and the democratic process we have. Treaty Principles Bill. fraught with so many issues, but it goes through the process, and it will become law, or it wont. Luxon or Adern cannot make it law as they are just CEO's not dictators with absolute power

Trump however is a dictator and an idiot. At least other dictators have/had brains, mis-used by personal goals. Such as Hitler wanting to control the world, and Putin wanting his USSR back.

Trump has passed a plethora of Executive Orders. Many, like the WALL, will never happen. Have a campaign slogan and Executive Order, it doesnt make it happen, although admittedly it got votes. Odd how we never hear about the Wall, the great wall, it will be great, any more. Many Executive Orders are being rolled back, as dumb, or rolled back by the Judiciary as they are counter to The Constitution, and/or Statutes. Trump is acting outside of the law. Yes, the POTUS has Executive capabilities, but he has gone well, well, over them.

Marketing guru, yes. Albeit using his wealth or perceived wealth, to bulldoze others. Ask those affected by his past bankrupts.

Disappointed with China, adding retaliatory tariffs, delayed to allow time for negotiations. Weak. All they are saying indirectly, is that they will also cow-tow to Trump. They should have said, ok, we will retaliatory tariff, no need for discussions, you do you. Like what many countries will do over time, seek alternative markets. (China wont say that neither will anyone else, but that's what will happen in coming years)

If US wants rare earth minerals, sorry none left, used up  in the free market we belong to. Spare Harley Davidson's or Bud Light? Thanks but no need, you can enjoy them.

When details are known its probably 'Profit' that is the real motivation.
Changes in awarding Government contracts, grants, subsidies and similar.
Once the CFO sees where things are going its hoist the sails and take advantage of the fair wind.

These things don't have to be a binary 0 or 1. The world is much more analog.
Unfortunately things get stuck in that trap for both sides.

Can you have too much of a supposed good thing yes, complete 'purity' is rarely attainable.
Moderation is unpopular with extremes of both sides.

quickymart: I'm more annoyed about the Democrats who sat at home (how many there were I don't know, but I imagine there were a few) and didn't vote for Harris, now they're reaping what they sow. This was all avoidable if people had just got out there and voted - borne out by the turnout between this election and 2020 being down 2.7%. That 2.7% - especially in the swing states - could have made quite a difference if those people had only turned up to vote, moreso since Trump only beat Harris by 1.5%; hardly the "landslide" he claimed it was.

in the United States non-voting is often as important as voting. The many people who stayed home and did not vote for Kamala Harris because of Biden's position on the Gaza war and failure to conclude a ceasefire would have been pleased that the ceasefire was achieved after Trump's election win. The ceasefire has saved numerous lives and there is a good possibility it can lead to better things.

To be fair to a proportion of non-voters, the electoral college system used for presidential elections in USA means many individual votes simply don't count towards a possible win.

It is not unusual that Democrats in solid 'red' states don't bother voting in presidential elections, and likewise Republicans in solid 'blue' states. You would have a hard time arguing with them that it's worthwhile in those cases. Even many people in this thread would prefer a sleep-in compared to the arduous voting process in many places. In NZ I've never waited longer than three or four minutes to cast a vote. In USA in many places you have to be dedicated to queuing like it's 1965.

Some states have implemented semi-proportional allocation of electors based on the vote proportions which is a big improvement but still falls a long way short of achieving one person one vote.

RNZ News - Trump's memecoin drops in value, and critics aren't surprised

today

A [NZ] cryptocurrency expert worries that memecoins will change the crypto world as we know it, and not in a good way ...

In digital finance, that phrase is used for tokens that have no true value - in essence, a money-grab.

A few days before his inauguration, US President Donald Trump launched his own coin, $Trump. Shortly after, $Melania launched.

So far, Trump's coin has dropped in value, down 70 percent from its peak ...

For critics, it's further evidence of memecoin's inherent volatility.

The Washington Post - Opinion - When the arsonist demands praise for his firefighting skills

today

Donald Trump has made a habit of ginning up crises and then declaring victory when he “solves” them. ...

The past two weeks have been fraught with international emergencies of the president’s own making - either problems that he pretends already plague us, or those he manifests into existence. This is the best way to understand his trade-war brinkmanship with Canada and Mexico.

Trump complains that Mexico and Canada take advantage of the United States on trade, despite the fact that he negotiated our current trade agreement with these countries during his first term. ...

But it turns out the trick to negotiating with Trump is to realize he has no idea what the facts are.

Thus, Mexican and Canadian leaders offered Trump, as their supposedly painful “concessions,” promises to do what they’d already been doing. ...

Trump and his flunkies hailed this alleged triumph.

In reality, Trump had only repackaged the status quo.

Trump won over many Arab Americans in this city. Now some ‘think we screwed up.’

I bet they do! Buyer's remorse much? 🙄

The Washington Post - Opinion

08 Feb 2025

So, here’s a shocker: It turns out that, if you elect a felon as president of the United States, he will continue to break laws once he’s in office. ...

The new administration over the course of the last fortnight has violated each of the following laws:

  • The Protecting Americans from Foreign Adversary Controlled Applications Act of 2024.
  • The Administrative Leave Act of 2016.
  • The Federal Information Security Modernization Act of 2014.
  • The Affordable Care Act of 2010.
  • The Foreign Affairs Reform and Restructuring Act of 1998.
  • The Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993.
  • The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act of 1986.
  • The Inspector General Act of 1978.
  • The Privacy Act of 1974.
  • The Impoundment Control Act of 1974.
  • The Rehabilitation Act of 1973.
  • The Federal Advisory Committee Act of 1972.
  • The Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952.
  • The Administrative Procedure Act of 1946.
  • The Public Health Service Act 1944.
  • The Antideficiency Act of 1870.

And those don’t include the ways in which Trump already appears to be in violation of the Constitution:

  • The First Amendment’s protections of free speech and association;
  • The Fifth Amendment’s guarantee of equal protection and due process;
  • The Eighth Amendment’s prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment;
  • The 14th Amendment’s promise of birthright citizenship;
  • Article I’s spending, presentment, appropriations and bicameralism clauses;
  • Article II’s take-care clause; and
  • The separation of powers generally.
