This banning of selective words is a very slippery slope. In the mid eighties we had a very dear friend who was very well read. He is now deceased but I remember him saying when governments of any shape or form, start withdrawing, banning or burning literature or any form of culture, then that regime is bound to failure within a decade and the instigators and leaders denigrated, jailed or assassinated/murdered.

“The creative human mind does not like being shackled. Any attempt leads to stagnation and atrophy of that mind therefore that nation hence its quick failure” he said.

Seen some clips of third world countries where USAID was cut off. Heart breaking. Many of us complain about the lawnmower broke, or no broccoli at the supermarket, but these third world countries that rely on aid have been cut off. These countries, Palestinians, Trump should be ashamed. But more interested in hotels to make him grate again. Grate is not a typo.

FineWine: This banning of selective words is a very slippery slope.

I can only wonder what would have happened if I mentioned the fact that numerous couples participated in the XXX Olympiad, or that I saw a Robin Red Breast yesterday, or commented on Nazi strategy in WWII, or mentioned the fact that my nephew's school play bombed, or that some photocopiers have difficulty discriminating between various shades of blacks, or that a photographer took several shots of the US President, or that the best laid plans of mice and men gang aft agley?

(In Trump's case using the terms "best" and "plans" very loosely).

USAID, All for 0.3% of the budget, used to be 0.5% in 80's.

The thing is that its partly a subsidy for USA Farmers and Companies.
Its not just gifts of money, but USA grown food, sometimes it might be logistics, equipment and skills from US companies etc.

So in addition being a very small part of USA budget, a percentage feeds back into USA economy.

Congress liked it as they could go back to their Farmers, and Industries and show what value they got spent in their State.

Congress also had oversight to be able to investigate any issues they had, call people to testify etc.

0.3% its not going to give American's much of a tax cut.

Programs related to disease control, with modern air transport, your neighbor is even closer, benefit all.

ezbee:

1984 did describe the practice of rewriting history, and to a degree 'alternative facts'.
Though when it was written the oxymoron 'alternative facts' may have seemed crude.

As Americans Doublethink and Newspeak their way into the future.

Ai makes a much more efficent 'forever' Big Brother.

I just finished reading that today, God what a depressing book. Even more depressing I can see parallels between what went on in Winston's world and the US today under the orange buffoon.

https://edition.cnn.com/2025/02/12/politics/musk-trump-oval-office-analysis/index.html

Trump needs to tread carefully with someone like Musk:

Musk’s success so far is the fruit of his decision to pick the easiest targets – like USAID and CFPB. Foreign aid is rarely popular with voters, especially in an era when an “America First” president runs the White House. And the consumer bureau has been in the sights of Republican lawmakers for years.

But the next targets could be more politically painful for Trump and his base. He’s hinted that the Education Department is high on the list – and he could pull off a feat dreamed of by several GOP presidents with a closure. But any disruption to student loans or important education programs in the states could anger voters beyond those upset about the gutting of USAID.

It appears that the Prez is not going to allow Ukraine to make any decisions on its future.

he’s going to chat with Putin and decide the terms of an end to the war. And he’s blocking access to NATO. As was expected.

He's already talked to Putin, apparently. Be interesting to see what happens next.

Putin, take what you want

Vlad, give him what he wants

Trump, I ended the war...

Somehow I don't think Putin wants it to end, as that means he didn't annex Ukraine and add it to his pet USSR 2.0

“We agreed to work together, very closely, including visiting each other’s Nations. We have also agreed to have our respective teams start negotiations immediately, and we will begin by calling President Zelenskyy, of Ukraine, to inform him of the conversation, something which I will be doing right now,”

Translated: Putin told me that I'm the greatest president in the world, even better than himself. He complemented my large hands, my well-known large penis, my "ideal man" build, and said I would outlive all my enemies.

I have picked a team so I don't have to worry about the details.

I agreed that Ukraine would give up all land that Russia has rightly taken, and Ukraine would completely disband its military, never allow any foreign forces to defend its borders, would pay reparations for any oil refinery destroyed, Russia would be allowed to enter Ukraine at will to kill any remaining Nazis.

All sanctions would be lifted. Ukraine must never interfere with any oil pipeline, now or in the future. Russia has imminent domain over any new pipelines. Russia is able to carry out inspection of Ukraine military outposts, and allowed to put missiles and artillery sites near Poland.

I told my friend that I wouldn't talk to Zelenskyy directly, or even visit Ukraine, and let my team do all the work, so I can get on with important business.

We than talked at length about my golf course records."
