The Washington Post - Military response in L.A. estimated to cost $134 million for 60 days

10 June 2025

The Trump administration’s military response to unrest in Los Angeles is expected to cost $134 million for 60 days of operations, a senior Pentagon official told lawmakers on Tuesday.

The estimate includes food, transportation, housing and other associated costs, said a senior Pentagon official who testified before the House Appropriations subcommittee on defense alongside Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

The money is expected to come out of operations and maintenance accounts, funds that can be used to pay for a variety of things, including military training.

Sounds like a textbook thing for DOGE to investigate, if there ever was one.

From the same issue of Stuff:

Stuff - Newsom is likely a key Democratic presidential candidate in next US election

10 June 2025

California Governor Gavin Newsom is a Democrat who could be a serious prospect to go up against the Republican Party candidate in the next US election.

Newsom and US President Donald Trump have been in a war of words since the Los Angeles protests started on Friday.  It could be said he has been the Republican president’s most vocal Democratic critic.

Newsom has accused the president of inflaming tensions, breaching state sovereignty and wasting resources, while warning protesters not to “take Trump’s bait”.

Trump’s call for Newsom's arrest marked “an unmistakable step toward authoritarianism,” the Californian Democate said.

The 57-year-old Newsom was formerly the mayor of San Francisco before he was elected governor of the state of California in 2018.

In 2023, his predecessor Arnold Schwarzenegger said it was a "no-brainer" that Newsom would someday run for president.

As long as Trump is spending "other people's money", and not his own, Trumps really doesn't care.

However the same day as California Governor Gavin Newsom filed a civil lawsuit, and personally name Trump as a defendant, Trump said he was OK with the Governor being arrested:

Border czar Tom Homan had suggested state officials who impede federal immigration enforcement, including Governor Newsom, could be arrested.

Trump responded: “I would do it [arrest the governor] if I were Tom. I think it’s great.”

"Mens rea": Even Trump didn't say his motive aloud, mens rea can be inferred from Trump's vindictive behavior,

Trump absolutely could not lawfully order Gavin Newsom's arrest simply because Newsom filed a lawsuit against him. That would be completely unconstitutional and illegal, with no legitimate legal justification.

Newsom’s lawsuit is an exercise of First Amendment rights -- specifically, the right “to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

The U.S. President does not have unilateral power to arrest individuals, including governors.

Arrests must follow due process under federal or state criminal law and go through the judicial branch, not presidential decree.

If Trump had tried to have Newsom arrested for suing him, it would likely have triggered an immediate injunction, judicial rebuke, and possibly constitutional crisis.

If Trump ordered someone's arrest for engaging in a legal or political process would be grounds for criminal cases against Trump: obstruction, civil rights violations.

Nixon's impeachments was in part because Nixon used his powers to retaliate against political enemies.

EDIT

The NY Times - Newsom Tells Nation That Trump Is Destroying American Democracy

breaking

Gov. Gavin Newsom made the case in a televised address Tuesday evening that President Trump’s decisions to send military forces to immigration protests in Los Angeles have put the nation at the precipice of authoritarianism.

The California governor urged Americans to stand up to Mr. Trump, calling it a “perilous moment” for democracy and the country’s long-held legal norms.

California may be first, but it clearly won’t end here,” Mr. Newsom said, speaking to cameras from a studio in Los Angeles. “Other states are next. Democracy is next.”

Democracy is under assault right before our eyes - the moment we’ve feared has arrived,” he added.

Reuters - Troops in LA can detain individuals, military official says, as protests spread across US

LOS ANGELES, June 11 (Reuters) - U.S. troops deployed in Los Angeles are authorized to detain people until police can arrest them, their commanding officer said on Wednesday, as hundreds of Marines prepared to move into the city as it entered a sixth day of protests.

Protests over President Donald Trump's immigration raids have spread from California to other U.S. cities, with hundreds of nationwide demonstrations planned for Saturday. ...

The 700 Marines and 4,000 National Guard troops that Trump has ordered to Los Angeles do not have arrest authority, U.S. Army Major General Scott Sherman, who is commanding the troops, told reporters.

But Sherman said they do have the power to detain individuals temporarily until law enforcement can arrest them, if needed to fulfill their mission of protecting federal personnel or property.

The Marines will move to the city "soon," but not on Wednesday, Sherman said. They will not carry live ammunition in their rifles, he added.

Stocks dip despite Trump’s notice of ‘DONE’ deal with China and better-than-expected inflation data: Fortune

The stock markets dropped on Wednesday despite a seemingly positive development in the trade war between the U.S. and China alongside a better-than-expected inflation report for May. The S&P 500 dipped 0.27%, the Nasdaq fell 0.50%, and the Dow Jones closed the day essentially flat.

“OUR DEAL WITH CHINA IS DONE, SUBJECT TO FINAL APPROVAL WITH PRESIDENT XI AND ME,” President Donald Trump posted Wednesday morning on his social media platform Truth Social, referring to President Xi Jinping of China.

The NY Times - A French Senator Becomes Trump’s European Nemesis

11 June 2015

With a scathing directness little heard from politicians in the United States and prompted by what he sees as a presidential assault on America’s essential checks and balances, Mr. Malhuret has compared Mr. Trump to two tyrannical Roman emperors, Nero and Caligula. ...

Mr. Malhuret, 75, a retired physician and a right-leaning centrist, was the mayor of Vichy for 28 years until 2017. From 1940 to 1944, [Vichy] was the capital of Marshal Philippe Pétain’s regime, which collaborated with Nazi Germany to send some 76,000 Jews to their deaths in Hitler’s camps. ...

Never before,” Mr. Malhuret said in his speech, has any president “issued so many illegal decrees, dismissed judges who could oppose him, sacked the entire military leadership in one go, weakened all counter powers and taken control of social media. This is not a mere illiberal drift. It is the beginning of the seizure of democracy.” ...

The Republicans are scared, the Democrats are stunned and leaderless, but I cannot imagine there will not be a reaction. The American people are facing one of the great challenges of the 21st century, as great as that confronting the French in 1940, when they had to decide whether to join the Resistance or not.”

What a performance, if there is a deal it will probably be a TACO.

Market will like that, at least back to normal ?
USA seems to be pumped with so much liquidity that just floods markets, NFTs, Memecoins, so its got to go somewhere.
Is that a flock of chickens looking for a place to roost, or the next market opportunity.

Trump and Cabinet will Trumpet this as a victory, getting back to where they started.
Or maybe even going backwards.
See we got supply of key minerals back that was withdrawn due to Trump in the first place.

( It seems the dirty, dangerous, polluting refining of these minerals that is the main issue.
American mined 'rare earths' get sent to China to refine anyways )

Trump will do anything to get his moment in the sun next to dictator for life Xie.
Apparently, Kim has snubbed Trump, knowing again that Trump is desperate to join the dictators club and can extract more for giving him a hug.

All Xie has to do is wait till Trump backs down, then gives up more, and maybe a bit more.

WARNING: disturbing videos

Woman returning to apartment shot by non lethal ammunition in LA

Australian reporter reflects on being shot with rubber bullet during LA protest

9 News Australia

Notice how the policeman looks and aims at the reporter while he back is turned, and without any word.

9News Australia and its parent company Nine Entertainment Co. are generally regarded as centrist to slightly center-right, but less overtly partisan than many U.S. media outlets.

Though the LA cops see all reporters with TV crews the same.

Bad headline on the video: "Woman returning to apartment shot by non lethal ammunition in LA". I see it often in news articles and reporting.

Police departments including L.A no longer use that term. They now use the term - "less lethal"

The name changed for very good reasons. There is plenty of potential for death when it is used and people are sometimes killed by it.
