Also, as pointed out in the other thread:

Fuel prices, however, won’t “necessarily” drop back down again, said Ardern. “What we’re seeing right now, is the impact of Covid and the recovery and of Ukraine,” she said. “The increase we’ve seen at the pump, it’s been significant. It has not come from excise [tax]… it has not come from government.”

Oil is still $20 USD per barrel cheaper than it was at its peak in 2008, but petrol prices are around $1 higher than they were then.

gzt: Ardern declined to describe the cost of living increase as a crisis. Looking at the article Ardern did not deny cost of living has increased. There are a number of reasons for that increase.

How could she possibly deny the cost of living has gone up?

Plenty of people consider the current hike in living costs a crisis, including most charitable organizations who are under unprecedented pressure to help families who are struggling.

Leadership isn't just about taking the plaudits when they are on offer, and standing on a podium reading out the case numbers and telling people not to panic over Covid.

I wonder if Arden had to feed her family and pay her mortgage off the average wage, whether her opinion on how serious the cost of living increases in the past 12 months, would change significantly.

The latest polls are going to be of some major concern for labour.

Going to be some scrambling behind the scene's even though she says I don't take notice of the polls I am focusing on the people.

True, but this is only a snapshot of this point in time. A lot can (and will) happen in the next 18 months (or thereabouts) until the next election.

If National continues on this trajectory however it could mean things are tougher for the Government in 2023. I don't get why all the love for Luxon though - has he actually done anything yet?

Did you know he's run an airline?

The same argument can be made of every opposition leader - they can't "do" anything, they aren't in government. In this case, with inflation being the way it is, that is a good way to be popular.

Yes, I'm fully aware he's run an airline. How is that relevant?

How is that different from Ardern prior to the 2017 election?

He never talks about it. I wondered if anyone was aware of it.

Well, maybe my comment about him was a bit harsh. He isn't the PM, and yes I acknowledge that Labour were possibly not going to win in 2020 either, but coronavirus changed all that.

Outside of "tax cuts" (basically for the rich) and "more roads" it will be interesting to hear if he has any new policies to announce - as in, something different that National don't usually replay coming up to an election. My inclination is at the moment he's still going through a new leader honeymoon (Judith had the same) but like all honeymoons it won't last.

As for Labour, while it's easy to criticise their handling of the pandemic, we've done a lot better than many other countries, but I don't know if that will still be such an issue at the next election. A lot can happen between now and then.

I think their problem is the bit we did a lot better in was back in 2020 before the last election; with it now just being 'oh well, fill your boots', just as all the economic fallout from a bunch of printed money and keeping interest rates too low for too long is starting to bite. It's probably been too long since we actually nailed anything Covid-wise to use as a fall-back as petrol hits $3.60 a litre and other living costs are rocketing ahead, and in the absence of policy wins such as actually building rapid transit like light rail (not the bloated monstrosities they keep proposing) or meaningful housing or tax reform.

2023 is shaping up to be a battle of the least-worst and the biggest losers will end up being voters themselves, no matter who wins.
