https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/christopher-luxon-begins-his-most-challenging-week/PPMFXMVRN5H4VBLIGVDGCBLCTA/

Earlier, National’s Simeon Brown told Ryan Bridge on Newstalk ZB that the party caucus was “in complete support of our leader”.

“We are completely behind Chris Luxon, very focused on winning in November, and making sure New Zealanders are reminded the challenges we are facing today are a direct result of the decisions made by Chris Hipkins and the Labour Party.”

He said National accepted there were still “challenges” facing New Zealanders but again lay the blame for them on Labour.

Jesus, Simeon, move on from this already. You've been running the show for about 2.5 years and things haven't really improved. You've had a decent(-ish) shot, you can't just keep blaming Labour for everything going wrong. How about funding healthcare properly, for a start? 🙄

Luxon as usual ignoring reporters on this Stuff article: https://www.stuff.co.nz/politics/360947703/christopher-luxon-national-party-leadership-live-blog

He doesn't turn up to Q&A, he doesn't talk to reporters so therefore he isn't talking to NZ. He just comes off as an arrogant asshole.

Reckon eh. I wonder if he's scared of some of the questions Jack Tame might give him, he wouldn't accept any bs talk-around-the-question responses, either.

Luxon gets a great reception on Auckland Morning radio bracketed by property investment advertising.
Anywhere else would be like lion's den compared with that. :-)

Ugh, I hate it when I agree with Nicola Willis.

“I’d love to be able to say I can take the pain away right now, but I’m conscious that short-term gain could lead to longer term pain,” she told Stuff, when asked about whether the Government could cut the petrol tax.

“I’m mindful that any immediate actions do come with a longer term cost,” Willis said, listing those “costs” both as the cost of Government borrowing, and also the potential of needing to cut back infrastructure projects which are funded by the fuel tax.

On the other hand there would be more EVs on the road now at lower prices - including a bunch entering the second hand market for the first time - if her government had not nixed the clean car discount scheme so she doesn't exactly get a free pass.

And in other news:

On First Up, Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour was asked if Australia should grant the players asylum - or if New Zealand should offer it.

...

Seymour said New Zealand has done something similar for refugees/aslyum seekers in the past.

"Perhaps the New Zealand government will do something like that today."

But they've already fled to Australia to escape a fossil-fuel addicted hard-line right-wing government, Dave. Why would we waste more of their time by making them come here first?

I hope we get more in-depth proposals for the next election cycle than just the same purchasing incentives we had before; driving fleet uptake with FBT exemptions is a way to get big chunks of vehicles into the second-hand market. I'm also not convinced that the clustering around prices at the old $80K incentive level has been really examined as a natural consequence of whatever that threshold ends up being if someone does decide we need more EV incentives again.

But I mean sure, I'll buy another EV to replace my current one if there's money on the table to do it.

Rejigging fleet FBT is a great idea. Even just making it clear utes only count if you're a tradie rather than an accountant would help reduce emissions a lot even if didn't prod people into EVs. Plus, there would be fewer utes on the road.

Just enforcing the FBT rules we have would be a start.

But we have decent EV and HEV utes now, they will only get better with time.

The COVID report is out. This line stands out in the press release:

"The report also found that the cost of living pressures New Zealanders are still feeling today – and the ongoing lack of social cohesion for some – are part of that story."

Way to turn this into "Let's blame the previous government at all times" from National. This report was never going to be apolytical.

Relevant: https://thespinoff.co.nz/politics/11-03-2026/the-real-lesson-of-the-second-covid-19-inquiry-we-live-in-a-post-truth-world

The article compares Winston and Seymour's claims against the actual report. As expected, these two are not saying exactly what is written.

Luxon seems to have completely confused vaccine injured people with the antivaxxer protesting people:

Stuff: Meanwhile Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said he was keeping an “open mind” about the idea. “There’s clearly a group of New Zealanders who feel like they weren’t seen and heard by their Government, you saw that with the big protest,” he said. “If this could help them feel seen and feel like finally they’ve ... been welcomed back into a society they saw as having ostracised them, maybe it could do some good.”

Peters for his part seems to be throwing some wild huge conspiracy type numbers around that could be obtained accurately instead from OIA requests if he was actually interested.
