Tariff Bingo, or Tariff Wheel of Miss-Fortune, where will we end up ?

In the past any New Zealand Prime minister would be champing at the bit to visit the Whitehouse.
A selfie beside a USA President, who in the past would mostly say nice things.
( Despite Ship visit thing )
Even getting a USA President to mention their name.

I expect Luxon is keeping a low profile in regard to this President.
A very low profile !

No one wants to be in focus of 'Eye of Sauron' in regard to new tariffs.
Oh you have GST, and don't buy more USA farm products and USA assembled cars.
Best to see how it shakes out with rest of the world.

Quietly but vigorously looking to rest of world for trade.
This goes double for any business that has developed a USA market, you could get excoriating tariffs anytime its a major risk.

Trade balance thing is bunk, as USA has monopolized digital services and pretty much decimated local advertising and media.
USA owned NZ companies that send their profits to USA, Financial services etc.

Trade in physical things is not the complete picture.
Facts never mattered to Trumplicans in control though, or TechBros either.

I don't think we should be making our own policies just because we think Trump might slap a random tariff on us. He already did that when we weren't doing anything. The entire world knows for sure now (if they somehow didn't before) that there is no rational reasoning behind his behaviour. Over time - and not very long in the scheme of things - this will cause everyone to reduce their reliance on US markets, gradually making it less and less relevant as the linchpin of global trade.

We should just do what's best for us and route around the damage. Maybe in future the US will come to its senses again but by then the damage will be long done.

It was once believed that it was impossible to bankrupt a casino, but Donald Trump managed to do this twice, in two casinos.

He appears to be using the same techniques - chaos, corruption, and incompetence - to bankrupt his country.

The Roman Empire collapsed slowly - but the post-war USA superpower is dissolving rapidly, while the world watches in disbelief.

As a reminder: Trump originally announced the tariffs on “Liberation Day,” but then put a 90-day pause on them. Does that mean we’re unliberated now? Or do we get re-liberated on August 1? Or is the initial liberation just delayed? And why would Trump delay our liberation anyway? Weren’t there supposed to be “ninety deals in ninety days”? So far he’s made a few announcement of quasi-deals, or frameworks for deals, or agreements to make a deal in the future with the United Kingdom and China. The administration said it had cut a deal with Vietnam this past week, but the details remain unclear. Is Bessent trying to arm-twist 87 more countries to negotiate trade deals in less than a month?

Jesus Christ, Trump must be one of the worst people in the universe who could get nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize! I hope like hell that he doesn't win it! 😠

Not even just services, many of the companies manufacturing goods offshore are US owned, the profits from the lower manufacturing costs go straight back to the US...

A great example was Fiji, they got slapped with a 32% tariff due to their trade imbalance, But the single item responsible for the trade gap is $200 million USD in bottled "Fiji water" shipped from Fiji to the US....

Fiji water's owners are Californian Billionaires Stewart and Lynda Resnick (but they're Dems so Trump wont care)

So due to the actions of a US company the entire country of Fiji gets slapped with 32% Tariffs.....

Gotta luv Trump logic..

Netanyahu nominates Trump for Nobel Peace Prize. Nothing is surprising anymore. Trump has already been nominated by Pakistan.

If Trump can also get nominations from India and DPRK then Trump will be the only president ever nominated for a Nobel by the only four countries in the world who refuse to sign the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.

A peace deal between the Koreas would be something.

Here’s Why The ‘Epstein List’ Still Haunts The Trump White House: Forbes

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters Monday that when Attorney General Pam Bondi had suggested the purported Epstein List was on her desk, she was referring to the entirety of the government documents on the investigation.

Leavitt was referring to a February Fox News interview in which Bondi was asked whether the Justice Department would release a “list of Jeffrey Esptein’s clients” to which she replied “it’s sitting my desk right now to review.”

Musk raised Bondi’s remarks Monday when he suggested the Trump administration was slow-walking, or even lying, about the information it has regarding the DOJ investigation into Epstein, pointing to Bondi’s comments and a DOJ memo released Monday that concluded Epstein killed himself (despite conspiracy theories promoted by right-wing influencers and even some in the Trump administration that he was killed) and that no client list existed.

The DOJ said in the memo it will not release any additional information into its Epstein investigation, contradicting Bondi’s previous suggestions that there was a trove of outstanding information, and prompting fury among some on the right who have been clamoring for more information to support their conspiracy claims about the probe into the disgraced financier.

The DOJ also released video footage taken outside of Epstein’s Manhattan jail cell that shows no one entered his cell in the hours before he was found dead there in 2019, evidence to support its claims he died by suicide.

Trump also suggested on the campaign trail last year he would release a list of clients who went to Epstein’s island in the Caribbean, telling podcaster Lex Fridman in September “I’d be inclined to do the Epstein, I’d have no problem with it.”

The Washington Post - Supreme Court allows Trump to launch mass layoff and restructuring plans

breaking

The Supreme Court on Tuesday cleared the way for the Trump administration to launch plans for mass layoffs and reorganizations at 19 federal agencies and departments while litigation continues.

The justices lifted a lower court order that temporarily blocked plans to fire thousands of federal workers, including at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Social Security Administration, because the administration did not first consult with Congress.

In response to other emergency requests from the Trump administration, the Supreme Court similarly has sided with the administration’s efforts to upend the federal bureaucracy.

The court’s conservative majority has permitted Trump officials to fire independent regulators and thousands of probationary workers while legal challenges play out in the lower courts.

Nasty!  🙄

EDIT

Dissent: Only Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson broke from the majority, writing “this decision is not only truly unfortunate but also hubristic and senseless.”

What Israel would know about "peace-making" can be written on the back of a postage stamp. If Trump gets anywhere near a Nobel prize it will only speak to just how far the once august organisation has fallen.

Oh Trump has banged on about Nobel prizes since he was elected first time.
Its like his need to get a 'positive' Time Person of the Year cover was such that he created his own and hung it in his golf club decade before that. Winning his Golf Clubs Tournament each year etc.

Like Elon Musk need to be a savant gamer, and outrageously cheat to support his claim.
He played so far below his ranking it became obvious someone else was running his accounts.

Trump did make Time magazine 2016 'Person of the Year'.
Though article came with a fact check section.

I think Trump was jealous that Mr H got a cover so easily.

For Nobels.

The count of prizes he should have was last up to 5, could be 6 by now.
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/trump-i-stopped-5-nations-from-going-to-war-and-somebody-else-will-get-the-nobel-peace-prize-for-writing-about-me/vi-AA1HWeDo

"Are you still talking about Jeffrey Epstein and not my Nobel prizes?"
