https://edition.cnn.com/2025/07/18/media/colbert-cbs-late-show-cancel-paramount-trump

Apparently cancelling Stephen Colbert's show is about "finances" but I understand that the company that makes his show wants to merge with another, and because Colbert says "mean" things about the orange buffoon (including speaking of the settlement they paid him due to some interview with Harris which he didn't like), of course if they don't cancel his show, the merger won't go ahead, so...

Or maybe I'm connecting the wrong dots here.

They were telling the truth when they said it was being cancelled for financial reasons. They just didn't specify that those reasons were the merger they need approval for.

Reuters - Trump sues Wall Street Journal over Epstein report, seeks $10 billion

WASHINGTON / NEW YORK, July 18 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump sued the Wall Street Journal and its owners including Rupert Murdoch for at least $10 billion on Friday, over the newspaper's report that his name was on a 2003 birthday greeting for Jeffrey Epstein that included a sexually suggestive drawing and a reference to secrets they shared.

The lawsuit filed in Miami federal court names Murdoch, Dow Jones, News Corp and its Chief Executive Robert Thomson, and two Wall Street Journal reporters as defendants, saying they defamed Trump and caused him to suffer "overwhelming" financial and reputational harm.

The Bulwark had a good, scathing assessment of the saga: https://www.thebulwark.com/p/america-is-a-good-place-and-worth-fighting-for

Trump has three possible defenses: The letter doesn’t exist; The letter is a fake; The letter doesn’t mean anything.

Until yesterday, Trump had held to #1, insisting that he barely knew Epstein. The Journal story makes that inoperable, so he’s moved on to #2.

“The letter is a fake” line can’t hold up, for the following reasons:

It’s part of a collection of similar letters, which are in the process of being authenticated. If the entire book was a bunch of fakes, that would be one thing. But the proposition that Trump’s is the only fake in the bunch? Dog won’t hunt.

Who is supposed to have done the forgery? Ghislaine Maxwell? Why? What was her motive? Or does Trump mean to suggest that Maxwell was duped by someone else who forged the fake letter and passed it off to her as genuine? Which would mean it was someone in Trump’s office—a trusted assistant or secretary—who claimed to have been delivering a Trump letter to Maxwell, but who instead had concocted a forgery? This also makes no sense.

The only other possibility is that it’s the Wall Street Journal that faked the letter. This won’t hold, either. There are too many sources for this story and too much evidence.

Which means that at some point Trump will have to pivot to claiming that his alleged letter doesn’t mean anything.

Recommended reading. A disturbing article, difficult to summarize ...

The Washington Post - Trump’s DOJ has fired dozens of prosecutors, upending decades-old norm  (unlocked link)

19 July 2025

The Justice Department under the Trump administration has fired dozens of career prosecutors during the past six months, making the dismissal of federal attorneys almost commonplace.

The dismissals often came without warning and have affected more than 40 prosecutors ...

The firings - often made without explanation - aren’t normal. Prosecutors and other federal employees are typically fired only when they do something improper or fail to perform their duties.

These firings account for only a small portion of the departures from the Justice Department, where many more have resigned or retired after they were demoted or moved into different jobs. *

Observers raised the prospect that Trump’s approach could thrust the government back more than 100 years, when a patronage system rewarded political allies with jobs and punished political opponents by taking away their livelihoods.

More than 4,000 employees accepted buyout offers.

The USA "Visa integrity fee" would have stopped me taking my Family to the USA last year.

It would have cost us NZ$3,600 just for that.

Its hard to tell if this is natural stupidity, or if it is deliberate so it can damage the US tourist industry.

What's next, the USA putting in the equivalent of "Great Chinese Firewall" to protect its people ?

If Trump is trying to destroy the tourism industry, he couldn't do much better. No wonder he bankrupted a casino.

Here’s the official U.S. Visa Waiver Program (VWP) list of countries from the Department of State’s website.

The fee is not applicable to Australia or New Zealand.

The U.S. government does not publicly provide an official explanation for why some countries are included in the Visa Waiver Program (VWP) and others are not.

All current VWP countries are in Europe, East Asia, Oceania, or select parts of the Middle East (Israel, Qatar).

No African, South Asian, Southeast Asian (except Singapore & Brunei), or Central American countries are in the program. Excluded are relative wealthy and political stabile countries like Mauritius, Costa Rica.

U.S. foreign policy biases disproportionately impact countries with large Muslim populations, even if they otherwise are similar to countries in the list. Being a US ally is not enough.

Conspicuous exclusions include South Africa, India, and Brazil.

US Will Begin Charging Some Tourists a US $250, NZD $421, ‘Visa Integrity F: Condé Nast Traveler

Visiting the United States is about to get significantly more expensive thanks to a new US visa fee increase.

Federal lawmakers have approved a hefty new visa fee that will soon apply to a large number of tourists entering the US. As part of the Trump administration’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act that was signed into law on July 4, a new USD $250 NZD $421 “visa integrity fee” will be charged to any US visitor who needs a nonimmigrant visa.
...
The fee does not apply to tourists from countries who do not need a visa to enter the US. This includes citizens of countries that are part of the US visa waiver program, as well as most travelers from Canada and Bermuda.

From Trump "I absolutely love that Colbert got fired His talent was even less than his ratings. I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert! Greg Gutfeld is better than all of them combined, including the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show."

Fox News’ resident “comedian” Greg Gutfeld:

“We need to learn from the Blacks.

The way they were able to remove the power from the n-word by using it.

So, from now on, it’s

What up, my Nazi?

Hey, what up, my Nazi?

Hey, what’s hanging, my Nazi?
