Another manufactured crisis from the Orange Moron … This is seriously bad news:

The NY Times - Trump Orders National Guard to Washington and Takeover of Capital’s Police   (unlocked link)

breaking

President Trump significantly escalated his efforts to exert federal authority over the nation’s capital on Monday, saying that he was temporarily taking control of the city’s police department and deploying 800 National Guard troops to fight crime there.

At a White House news conference, the president painted a dystopian picture of Washington - including “bloodthirsty criminals” and “roving mobs of wild youth” - that stood in sharp contrast to official figures showing violent crime in the city is at a 30-year low.

Mr. Trump said Attorney General Pam Bondi would oversee the federal takeover of the capital’s Metropolitan Police Department and added that he was prepared to send the military into Washington “if needed.”

A White House official said the takeover was intended to last for 30 days. ...

and

The Washington Post - Trump announces federal takeover of D.C. police, deploys National Guard to fight crime   (unlocked link)

Reuters - Trump takes over DC police in extraordinary move, deploys National Guard in capital

EDIT : Trump’s decision to use Title 32 to activate D.C. National Guard forces will allow him to use them to conduct law enforcement while they are under his direct control.  What could possibly go wrong?

Stopped how by whom? Regrettably that time seems to have well and truly passed.

Americans given ample warning and chances, that history hardly hands out for free.

They can't even have the excuse of walking blindly over the edge of the precipice.
Even given a 4 year break of relative calm, return to chaos the promise of a dictator won.

It's now beyond Trump, as should nature take its course, we get J D Vance.

There is a Cabinet full of 'would be' Trumps, Legislature, and more than a few Judges.
Texas for example, gone is the quiet creeping gerrymander, a pretense of propriety, its full all 'out in the open' crushing of districts that remain.

With Auditor Generals and various other balances gone, various departments now run by mini-me Trumps.

Not even a year has gone of the 4 year term, not that it matters given the calamity is not going.

'They are eating the cats and dogs', 'I will give you life on the toxic airless wasteland of Mars' won.

Its not to say given enough social media campaign money we would not go the same way.

Sideface: Trump Orders National Guard to Washington and Takeover of Capital’s Police

Trump's take-over was prompted by DOGE stooge "Big Balls" being injured by two 15 year old carjackers.

"They may take our lives, but they’ll never take our Big Balls!"
Braveheart (William Wallace)

"Big Balls is a dish best served cold."
Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

"Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You beat my Big Balls. Prepare to die."
The Princess Bride

"Vengeance is mine; I will repay, saith the Big Balls."
The Bible (Romans 12:19)

This strikes me as a distraction, or show to appeal to his supporters.

Realistically, it's just temporarily adding 800 national guard members to the existing 3500 member police force. In a population of 700,000 an additional 800 won't turn it into a police state. And whether the police force is acting under local or federal authority, they are still bound by the law.

More concerning is the precedent being set (especially when the crime rates in DC are actually trending downward), and the talk about deploying the military (which I suspect is just talk). Also lumping homeless and violent criminals together, as if there is a single solution that can deal with both problems.

Trump is supposedly "bound by the law", and yet...

Now if those 800 national guard members are loyal trumpers the they too may not feel to be bound by laws, how soon will police who voted democrat get pushed out and replaced ?

Trump is tough on crime. Just ask Ghislaine Maxwell, in Club Fed.

Convicted murderer released by Trump from Venezuelan prison is free in U.S.: New York Times

He killed three people in Spain and fled to Venezuela, where he was sentenced to 30 years in prison, court documents show. Then last week, the Trump administration negotiated his release as part of a large prisoner swap, and he arrived on American soil.

Now, the convict, Dahud Hanid Ortiz, 54, a U.S. Army veteran, is free in the United States, according to two people with knowledge of the case. One said he was in Orlando, Fla.

When the Americans put Mr. Hanid Ortiz on a plane on Friday back to the United States, at least some people in the Trump administration knew of his criminal past, according to a third person.
...
Mr. Hanid Ortiz’s crimes and conviction had been documented in the news media and in public court records for years before his release.

In 2023, officials in the Biden administration who had learned of his detention in Venezuela decided not to take him as part of a different prisoner swap, according to a former U.S. official.
