So the orange buffoon invites his BFF dictator to his own country, the Russian gives nothing, and Trump gets...nothing too? Just lots of hugs and smiles and kisses all round 🙄

https://www.1news.co.nz/2025/08/16/no-ukraine-ceasefire-confirmed-after-trump-and-putins-meeting/

Was this a win for Putin? Absolutely. Trump was the loser here.

So much for "solving the Russia-Ukraine war within 24 hours [of taking office]". I think it's been over 7 months now.

The NY Times - Trump Backs Plan to Cede Land for Peace in Ukraine

breaking

President Trump on Saturday split from Ukraine and key European allies after his summit with President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia, backing Mr. Putin’s plan for a sweeping peace agreement based on Ukraine ceding territory it controls to Russia, instead of the urgent cease-fire Mr. Trump had said he wanted before the meeting.

Skipping cease-fire discussions would give Russia an advantage in the talks, which are expected to continue on Monday when President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine visits Mr. Trump at the White House.

It breaks from a strategy Mr. Trump and European allies, as well as Mr. Zelensky, had agreed to before the U.S.-Russia summit in Alaska.

Mr. Trump told European leaders that he believed a rapid peace deal could be negotiated if Mr. Zelensky agreed to give up the rest of the Donbas region to Russia, even those areas not occupied by Russian troops ...

The score: Putin 1, Trump 0

Executive Summary: TACO  🙄

EDIT:  Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson of Britain, once considered the Trump of London, called the Alaska summit meeting “just about the most vomit-inducing episode in all the tawdry history of international diplomacy.

Trump just can't believe Americans don't trust Russians.

He also forgot that Fox news median viewer age is around 69 years, and heavily skewed to Republicans. Definitely the "better red than dead" demographics.

It shows how detached from his typical American crotchety white 79 year old grandpa.

Fox News is livid that Trump was disrespected on "American soil" Putin spoke first, and gasp, in Russian!

Trump looked uncomfortable in his seat. He should try more intimate glide lubricant next time.

Here's my New Zealand centric view on US tariffs.

NZ's economy is still dominated by meat & dairy exports. That was short-sighted, and we were let down by our politicians.

Likely to suffer the most is smaller animal product firms. They may not be able pivot quickly to new markets and alternative logistics.

Wine exports will also feel the pain. We export about ~NZ$ 750 million annually now face an anticipated extra NZ$ 75 million in tariffs.

We'll also struggle to build low-carbon "green" logistics, as it can conflict with the need for cost efficiency and speed.

The flip side of the coin is also not great, imports. We import from China and Australia. US is #3 or #4. We'll feel the tariff effects mostly in US aircraft and parts (little alternatives), medical instruments and pharmaceuticals

There are others US imports, but let face it, most of what has been imported from the US manufacturers is also manufactured in China.

In good news, while U.S. exports to NZ are projected to fall, imports from tariff-affected countries are expected to increase, as they pivot away from U.S. markets

It's projected a modest net decrease in total NZ imports by roughly NZ$ 259 million.

In the long run NZ is diversifying, trying to establish more trade the EU, UK, Gulf Cooperation Council (Saudi Arabia), India, and others to reduce reliance on the US.

Oddly Vietnam demand for NZ apples has increased more than expected.

All in all not great, but not world ending.

In 2015, the year before Trump first took office, the ICE budget was 6 billion.

With the "Big Beautiful Bill", by it's over $100 billion by 2029.

If ICE was a country's budget, it would be the 20th most funded military in the world.

ICE is now the highest-funded law enforcement agency. That’s bad news for our democracy.: MSNBC

The Department of Homeland Security has put its Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s recruitment efforts into overdrive. As ICE attempts to boost its numbers to carry out Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown, the agency is carrying out an ad blitz.

According to 404 Media, DHS is looking to run ads on streaming services like HBO Max and Hulu.

The landing page on the Join.ICE.gov website features an image of Uncle Sam with the all-capped headline “America Needs You.” Underneath, it eerily states: “America has been invaded by gardeners, dish washers and fruit pickers criminals and predators. We need YOU to get them out.”

Accurate?? He can if there is a peace deal, which means Ukraines gives the aggressor terrotory that they earned, earned as the US backed out of arms support for a period, backed out of Intelligence support for a period, got a minerals deal. That schools, hospitals, kindys, apartments are bombed daily is apparently no issue. Same as supporting Israel's genocide.

I shall hold my vote for now.

I read it as he wants a Nobel Peace Prize so badly...but he's hardly going the right way about it. Ukraine should just give up land - for what? There's no guarantee (at the moment) that Putin will stop raining bombs down on hospitals and schools and any damn thing he likes even if he does get any land.

Edit: yes, I agree with your point.

In other news, I heard that Trump is giving up on Ukraine, they need to make the deal with Putin. Putin was his mate, then Zelensky doest want peace, then Putin let me down, then they are mates again. Its clear from the Alaska non event that Putin holds the cards. The next step down for Trump is to exit stage left than be holding the cards of a failed peace attempt. End it, so whatever happens, it wasnt "my" fault

There's not only "no guarantee," it is a 100% certainty he will break the promise as soon as he thinks he can win more. He signed the Budapest Memorandum right back at the start to guarantee Ukraine's sovereignty (as did the USA and UK) in exchange for them handing back the nukes that the USSR had stationed in Ukraine. Had they held onto them and made a crash course in breaking the codes maybe this would be a different conversation.

Anyway the point is that Putin's promises are even more worthless than Trump's.

Yes, there are many qualities that make a leader, ego can be one of them, but its never 99% of them, unless you are a dictator. We are well aware of past dictators, but one in todays modern world and a democratic country, who happens to be the world leader militarily and economically??  Unreal is a massive understatement.

BBC News - Extraordinary show of diplomatic support for Zelensky

18 Aug 2025

An unprecedented moment

This is an extraordinary, unprecedented, show of diplomatic support for President Zelensky.

When he travels to the White House tomorrow, he will be accompanied by the leaders of the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Finland, the European Commission and NATO – all there to reinforce the message that Europe has his back and will be heard. ...

To have this many leaders assemble for what is essentially a wartime crisis meeting appears to be without modern precedent.

Have to say I got a warm fuzzy feeling when I saw how those wonderful EU leaders were going with Zelenski to back him up.
