"Government to announce support package for families under the pump as petrol hits $4 a litre"

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/fuel-prices-government-to-announce-support-package-for-families-under-the-pump-as-petrol-hits-4-a-litre-in-some-areas/4IGEJBXRFZAUPOUCSWCB2ECOGA/

There are some indications support will be provided via the in work tax credit. It would be particularly unjust to exclude people who legally and desirably work part time on a benefit under the abatement regime and rely on a vehicle to do so.

Edit: There may be other similar gaps for superannuitants working part time.

The Green Party's alternative fuel support plan. The Herald seems to think the proposed cancellation of roading infrastructure is intended to pay for fuel support - It isn't:

“If the Government means what it says about ‘preparing for the worst’, now is the time to pull the plug on exorbitantly expensive, low-value projects like the Roads of National Significance and LNG import facility. The Green Party is ready, willing and able to provide the support necessary to invest in building real resilience through renewable energy generation."

https://www.greens.org.nz/greens_offer_votes_to_national_party_for_immediate_relief_in_fossil_fuel_crisis

Disclosure: Googled to find Green Party press release above because I could make no sense of the claims in the Herald article.

The Herald deliberately being misleading? I'm shocked (!). It's why I stopped giving them clicks.

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/political/590472/fuel-crisis-package-nearly-150-000-families-to-receive-50-a-week

An extra $50 a week for about 150,000 families, mostly for those who already receive Working For Families tax credits.

Anything for struggling landlords?

Tobacco companies are also doing it tough.

Maybe. I just figured it was a rush job and unfinished like the first update sometimes is.

Edit: At this time no change + article still has the typo from 5:00am this morning

As a middle income couple who can't have kids (not by choice) we're typically excluded from anything. That's under any government though - families without kids are usually last on the list.

We won't get any help. The car is vital for us though so we just have to suck up the costs. I can reach my medical centre on my mobility scooter which is good. The super market is within range but pointless as I couldn't carry much and a scooter on a supermarket is next to impossible and my wheelchair would have the range.

Here is a crazy notion, lets give peace a chance.

Some of the New World vans are electric so I assume they'll still be doing the rounds as long as trucks have fuel to take food to the supermarkets in the first place.

Oh yes.

Tim Costley once again pretending this was not easy. Because, socialism, when it isn’t for the rich isn’t easy for this party.

Meanwhile, this government has absolutely no issues if the money is going to landlords, tobacco companies or even burning it by cancelling ferry contracts only to spend more later on.

But, Tim Costley has no issues spending bucketloads on travel, or taking the $36,400 Parliamentary allowance to rent his own apartment in the CBD back to himself: https://www.newstalkzb.co.nz/on-air/wellington/wellington-mornings-with-nick-mills/audio/tim-costley-national-mp-living-40-minutes-from-parliament-defends-decision-to-take-taxpayer-funded-apartment/ - must be nice to have that entitlement while many others have to make their way into town and back home again daily for work.

And furthermore. There’s his face plastered on advertisements all over Kāpiti funded by the taxpayer because this guy seriously loves seeing his own face…

So clearly easy to take money for himself, not give it to people who need it more than him. What a bloody joke of a MP and Party.

Hadn't heard of this guy until tonight, but he seems like he would be in good company with some other outstanding (former) National MP's, such as Todd Barclay and Aaron Gilmore:

I wonder how he'll fare this election? Looks like Otaki is usually a National seat.

School attendance dropping as fuel prices increase:

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/education/ministry-of-education-weighs-remote-learning-as-fuel-crisis-worsens-attendance-drops/SOQ2MFILQVFIDCONROLIIX6K4I/

Rural areas will be paying the higher end of the price range for fuel. Inflation review for benefits and national super is 1st April. That may help a bit but not for long.
