Reuters - Trump fails to overturn E. Jean Carroll's $83 million verdict

Summary

  •     Court rejects Trump's presidential immunity argument
  •     Carroll's separate $5 million verdict was upheld in June
  •     Trump denied writer's rape accusation

NEW YORK, Sept 8 (Reuters) - A federal appeals court on Monday refused to throw out an $83.3 million jury verdict against U.S. President Donald Trump for damaging the reputation of the writer E. Jean Carroll in 2019 when he denied her rape claim.

The 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Manhattan rejected Trump's argument that the January 2024 verdict should be overturned because he deserved presidential immunity.

It also faulted Trump's persistence in attacking Carroll, with attacks against the former Elle magazine columnist becoming "more extreme and frequent" as the trial approached.

"The record in this case supports the district court's determination that the 'degree of reprehensibility' of Mr. Trump's conduct was remarkably high, perhaps unprecedented," the unanimous three-judge panel said in its unsigned decision.

The NY Times - Epstein Estate Turns Over Birthday Drawing Apparently Signed by Trump

breaking

Democrats on the House Oversight Committee released an image of the sexually suggestive note and drawing apparently bearing the signature of Donald J. Trump, taken from a 2003 book celebrating the 50th birthday of the disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein.

Mr. Trump has insisted he never wrote such a note.

Lawyers for Mr. Epstein’s estate provided a copy of the book to the committee in response to a subpoena.

This image was subpoenaed from the Jeffrey Epstein estate by the Oversight Committee.

Note the location of Trump's alleged signature.

Trump insists that this drawing is fake.

Trump when first confronted. This is NOT a parody, just another bald-faced Trump lie:

“This is not me. This is a fake thing. It’s a fake Wall Street Journal story. I never wrote a picture in my life. I don’t draw pictures of women... It’s not my language. It’s not my words.”

I could believe Trump did the 1st rough skyscraper but the skylines would have taken too much concentration and they show variation. I think he just stuck his signature on those. Maybe his kids did them.

Kudos to sideface for spotting the signature's position. It's a little more more obvious in this New Yorker magazine cartoon :-)

Mike Johnson claimed Trump was anti-Epstein informant, then retreated amid criticism: The Guardian

In a matter of days, the US House speaker, Mike Johnson, claimed that Donald Trump was an FBI informant who was working to try to take down the late sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein – then backed away from the confusing statement.

Johnson made the baffling claim on Thursday speaking to reporters at the US Capitol. “He was an FBI informant to try and take this stuff down,” Johnson said of Trump.

The remark was so perplexing that it reportedly confused even Trump administration officials.

By Sunday, Johnson was walking back his explosive comment. “The speaker is reiterating what the victims’ attorney said, which is that Donald Trump – who kicked Epstein out of Mar-a-Lago – was the only one more than a decade ago willing to help prosecutors expose Epstein for being a disgusting child predator,” his office said in a statement.

Being a Human Resources employee in a Republican politician's office must be a nightmare.

A snippet from Politico.

"Before serving in the Trump administration, Tucker Stewart was a top adviser to Senator Roger Marshall (Republican Kansas). While in that role, he shared with fellow Hill staffers something he’d written: a 28-page love story about a cowboy living in D.C., complete with vivid descriptions of oral sex and other sexually explicit content.

Now, Stewart is a Trump appointee and deputy assistant secretary of Agriculture, working out of the department’s congressional affairs office.

And in recent weeks, the story he wrote has resurfaced, quickly traveling around Hill circles, making its way to other federal departments and even outside agriculture industry and trade groups. "

J D Vance is one thromboembolism from being President (dislodged blood clot.)

Regarding 11 South Americans in international waters in a crowded 12 meters long open-top boat heading, they were 2,900 km from Key West. headed for Trinidad and Tobago. The boat contained magically weightless and invisible cargo. The best case is the boat could reach Key West Florida in 3 days, 3 refuels with a high speed run, or more likely 12 days. At which point they would be in US waters, not international water.

Of the vaporization of the 11, Vance stated he doesn't give a shit if the murder is a war crime.

He stated the boat was "loaded" with narcotics "heading to the United States," and that the strike was on “positively identified Tren de Aragua Narcoterrorists”

Some officials cited distinctive gang-related tattoos as evidence linking those killed to Tren de Aragua, not exactly positive identification.

Shortly thereafter Secretary of State Marco Rubio asserted Trump had the right—“under exigent circumstances, to eliminate imminent threats to the United States,” even referring to the boat as an immediate threat when “full of cocaine or fentanyl... headed to the United States”

The administration leaned heavily Tren de Aragua as terrorists to justify using lethal force under wartime logic rather than traditional law enforcement

Vance defends strike on alleged drug boat: ‘Highest and best use of our military’: Politico
...
“Killing cartel members who poison our fellow citizens is the highest and best use of our military,” Vance posted to X on Saturday morning.

[someone] said “killing the citizens of another nation who are civilians without any due process is called a war crime.”

“I don’t give a shit what you call it,” Vance replied.

Charlie Kirk, a very vocal ally of Trump, is shot and dies at an event in Utah.

Unfortunate that a quote he made in 2023 around the supposed necessity of guns seems like a bit of hollow bravado now:

Few people get to die doing what they love. Now watch it get further twisted for Trumpian advantage - by, oh I don't know let's say rumouring he was shot by an undocumented Mexican or something like that.

I see a few comments online saying that Trump will pounce on this as a distraction from Epstein. Wouldn't surprise me.

Also thoughts and prayers etc etc etc and all that other lip service/performative bs that Republicans do whenever there's - yet another - shooting in the US.

I suppose now is also "not the time" to talk about gun control either, right? 🙄

Charlie Kirk was a brave and kind man. I quite enjoyed his calm manner and facilitation of much needed debate in a free and democratic society. A needless death and I note that Democratic Leaders such as President Obama, Kamala Harris and Gavin Newsom have offered condolences and called for calm. Let's hope it leads to a more perfect union as the founders intended.
