The only thing I know for sure is you won't answer a direct question.

Yes I am a Democrat. And to answer your statement the reason why I don’t answer direct questions is because I have been involved in politics for a long time. It just comes with the territory.

Only about 40-45% of the country feels the same way as you at the moment. As an aside, my partner is an American too but I'm feeling a lot of optimism coming from her about her homeland.

Typo on my part - she's not feeling optimistic at the moment.

And "I'm involved in politics so I don't answer direct questions" is a very...weird defense for avoiding a question. Hell, even Trump has a go at answering direct questions from reporters (although the response is more often than not an outright lie).

Saying "oh I think Charlie Kirk is great, here's a video of one of his debates" isn't really going to convince anyone who has a negative view of him to think differently. This is why people are asking for your opinion on what his views on various topics was.

As a Democrat supporter I ask everyone a question.

Have you watched Charlie Kirk's videos on Youtube which have gotten millions of views?

Until this year I had not. After watching them I changed my mind about the man. I think both sides need to listen to what each other are saying otherwise it will lead to further violence.

I've stayed away from the Politics forum for a long time, but this post cannot go unanswered. Kirk used falsehoods, misrepresentations and half-truths to justify his publicly shared "opinions". I put it in quotation marks because I'm not sure what his story was - whether he was genuinely convinced of the truthfulness of his opinions, or whether he was a grifter using every means necessary to keep the gig going for as long as possible, finding fertile ground in the right wing. Funnily enough, on rare occasions that I found myself in agreement with his opinion, I'd disagree on the logical path of getting there, because his path was usually made of lies. He was one of bunch of very similar types of conservative propagandists who emerged over the last 5-10 years - Shapiro, Kisin, Rubin, who thrive in the US but are easily taken to task anywhere else in the world where public education still encourages broader education and critical thinking.

All this isn't to say he deserved his fate. This was a despicable act, infuriating and horrifying in every way. But it is to say - he was a professional propagandist and liar. Let's not deceive ourselves that he was anything else.

I would like the temperature to be taken down politically for the good of the country and for more bi-partisan co-operation to occur.

One final example - there must be hundreds of these - where the president could have called for calm and addressed Kirk's shooting without pointing the finger at anyone:

Yet if it's the other side? He's silent.

Sorry, I don't see his behaviour changing anytime soon, and until he does, the temperature will not come down.

As I said, if you want to see actual change like you're asking for, I suggest directing your energies towards the guy at the top.

The Unite the Right rally was a white supremacist rally that took place in Charlottesville, Virginia in 2017.Marchers included members of the
  • alt-right
  • neo-Confederates
  • neo-fascists
  • white nationalists
  • neo-Nazis
  • Klansmen
  • and far-right militias.
Some groups chanted racist and antisemitic slogans and carried weapons, Nazi and neo-Nazi symbols, the valknut, Confederate battle flags, Deus vult crosses, flags, and other symbols of various past and present antisemitic and anti-Islamic groups.

Self-identified white supremacist James Alex Fields Jr. deliberately rammed his car into a crowd of counter-protesters, killing Heather Heyer and injuring 35 people.

Trump’s initial response to violent protests in Charlottesville, Va. It was at this press conference that Trump said that "you also had people that were very fine people, on both sides."

Which bring me to compare the two assasinated du jour

Politician Melilssa Hortman
  • Speaker of the Minnesota House

  • Survived my two children

  • Expanding or securing universal school meals.

  • Paid family and medical leave reforms.

  • Advocating for and passing policies on abortion rights.

  • Environmental protection efforts including being the “chief author of the state’s solar energy standard.”

  • Supporting gun control and police reform, e.g. helping ban police choke holds after George Floyd’s death.

  • She was respected for her ability to work across the aisle and for her pragmatism, even when that required balancing party goals vs broader collaboration.

  • Her mother found in her wallet a prayer to St. Francis: “Make me a channel of your peace.”
And one was a single, college dropout, who never had a job, or served his country by attending the military, who started Turning Point

Southern Poverty Law Center
  • “anti-government extremist groups.”

  • They describe TPUSA as “a well-funded, hard-right organization with links to SPLC-identified hard-right extremists”

  • it promotes Christian nationalism
Anti-Defamation League (ADL)
  • Since its founding, Charlie Kirk has “moved further to the right and has promoted numerous conspiracy theories about election fraud and Covid-19 and has demonized the transgender community.”

  • promotes Christian nationalism: the idea that Christians should dominate the government and other areas of life in the US.

  • “TPUSA continues to attract racists … Numerous TPUSA representatives have made bigoted remarks about minority groups and the LGBTQ+ community.”

  • TPUSA runs programs like “Professor Watchlist” and “School Board Watchlist,” which the ADL describes as aimed at exposing professors / teachings TPUSA believes are “radical, hateful, immoral, and racist” (including critical race theory, gender/sexual ideology, etc.).

Suspect in the picture is wearing a more or less generic American flag and eagle shirt.

Imo there is really nothing in these health rumors and freeze frame pictures. It's not hard to find Trump doing similar expressions since forever.

At his age, I am surprised he gets up in the morning with his diet and exercise regime as it is.

I remembered that Trump paved over the White House Rose Garden, and used American flag themed sewer drainage, which people will unwittingly trample.

I though the Rose Garden could represent Trump's legacy.

And this old song popped into my memory.

Joni Mitchell - Big Yellow Taxi

Authored by the New York Times Editorial Board:

https://www.nytimes.com/2025/09/10/opinion/charlie-kirk-mourning-political-violence.html

This editorial board disagreed with Mr. Kirk on many policy questions, and we are unreservedly horrified by his killing. We grieve for his loved ones. We mourn his death. Amanda Litman, president of the left-leaning group Run for Something, offered an appropriate response: “Political violence is meant to scare and silence — it is absolutely never acceptable. We don’t have to agree with someone to affirm they have a right to speak their mind without fearing for their life or safety.” Many prominent Democrats and Republicans offered similar sentiments

The intensity of our political debates will not disappear. The stakes are too high, and the country disagrees on too many important questions. But we Americans have lost some of our grace and empathy in recent years. We too often wish ill on our political opponents. We act as if people’s worth is determined by whether they identify as a Republican or a Democrat. We dehumanize those with whom we differ.

This is a moment to turn down the volume and reflect on our political culture. It is a moment for restraint, rather than cycles of vengeance or the suspension of civil liberties, as some urged on Wednesday. It is also a moment to engage with people who have different views from our own. When societies lose the ability to argue peacefully and resort to violence to resolve their political debates, it usually ends very badly.

TACO Trump Gets Rejected by Workers Detained in Mass Immigration Raid
THANKS, BUT NO THANKS
After rounding up hundreds of workers at a Hyundai plant, the president offered them the chance to stay. Only one person accepted.
https://www.thedailybeast.com/taco-trump-gets-rejected-by-workers-detained-in-mass-immigration-raid/

""
President Lee Jae-myung said Thursday the arrests had thrown Korean businesses in the U.S. into “serious confusion” and warned it could chill future investment. He had met with Trump at the White House just 10 days before the immigration sweep at the Georgia site.

“Our businesses that are investing in the United States will no doubt be very hesitant,” Lee said at a press conference marking his first 100 days in office.
""

The return of Koreans was delayed as Trumps authorities wanted to charge them and give them a record.
Then Trumps authorities still wanted to send them to the airport in chains, even though they were leaving voluntarily and did not want to stay.
Finally, a deal was negotiated for Koreans to leave the appalling treatment and conditions with some semblance of dignity.

In the past these large billion-dollar projects by 'non fly by night companies' were given some flexibility.
There would be a meeting with management to iron out any irregularities which often result from delays in paperwork and rubber stamping.
Dare I say this paperwork managed by um 'the locals'.

Under Trump its different.
Like people find at border, it seems everyone has quotas to fill, a few hundred easy marks make the rest of the month a doddle.
Talking to management and sorting things out just ruins the opportunity.
