In related news, David Seymour was kirk-blocked by the opposition. "Tells you all you need to know for the next election." Indeed it does, Matt King.

According to the gun violence archive, more than 18,000 people have died from gun violence in America so far this year. Close to this number die every year. This is not counting suicides, which would roughly double the number.

Let us take a moment to mourn all of those tragic losses and condemn the self-serving political cowards who continue to allow this travesty to carry on year after year after year. Let us line up a military honour guard at their coffins and carry them one by one onto Air Force Two. Let us bestow upon them medals of freedom for having the bad luck to get in the way of some mad person’s bullet.

Charlie Kirk did not deserve to die this way but neither did tens of thousands of others. He is not a fallen hero. He is just another sad American statistic.

It's an incredible number especially when you consider it is not at all evenly distributed.

In the wake of Charlie Kirk's Murder, Sen. Bernie Sanders Addresses Rising Political Violence in America

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HlIvH6ozvv4

"A free and democratic society, which is what America is supposed to be about, depends on the basic premise that people can speak out, organize and take part in public life without fear, without worrying they might be killed, injured or humiliated for expressing their political views. In fact, that is the essence of what freedom is about and what democracy is about. You have a point of view, I have a point of view that's different than yours. That's great. Let's argue it out. We make our case to the American people at the local, State and Federal levels. And we hold free elections in which the people decide what they want. That's called freedom and democracy. And I want as many people as possible to participate in that process without fear."

"We must welcome and respect dissenting points of view. That is what our Constitution is about. That is what our Bill of Rights is about. That in fact is what Freedom is about."

SaltyNZ:

To expand on SaltyNZ's post, Matt King posted this false claim:

"Did you know that the Greens and Labour blocked a motion by acting PM David Seymour to acknowledge the assassination of Charlie Kirk. Tells you all you need to know for the next election."

Matt King formed, and disolved, a party called DemocracyNZ. It best showing was 0.23% of the vote. I would call a scattered brained / dumbed-down version of libertarian.

He is very much anti-vaccine, and was part of the protest occupiers in Wellington in 2022. He is a "burn-baby-burn" climate change skeptic.

On to his Facebook post, there's no reliable primary source confirming that such a motion was formally tabled by anyone around Charlie Kirk. Charlie Kirk has not been mentioned in the Hansard record of Parliament, official notice of motion. No NZ motion has been mentioned by mainstream NZ political news outlets.

And no motion means there was nothing to block.

His untrue conspiracy post about Charlie Kirk makes me wonder if King is getting sucked further into the murky swamp of right-wing conspiracies.

Regarding Matt King and David Seymour's relation, somewhat hilariously in 2018, Matt King plagiarized an ACT press release, removing references to David Seymour/ACT. King admitted he had copied and pasted the press release, saying he agreed with much of what Seymour had written.

There's a mention on Twitter of a “notice of motion” so I suspect Matt King himself reached out to David Seymour, and was rebutted. I further conjecture King's ego couldn't stand that he was rejected by a fellow libertarian, so falsely displaced his frustration to the Greens and Labour.

I suggest Matt King avoid social media right-wing rabbit holes. For his family's sake I sincerely suggest getting mental health help.

Oh there definitely was. I first heard it reported on RNZ in the evening. I just can't find any sources in text to link to other than that one - which is fascinating in its own right - now that it has dropped off the bottom of Stuff's live politics feed.

Kash Patel is the FBI Director. Previously he worked as a congressional aide, helped write the “Nunes Memo” attacking the FBI and DOJ’s handling of the Trump's Russia investigation. He has been described as “Trump’s Loyalist” and a “Attack Dog”

Patel publicly defended Trump’s retention of classified documents, even suggesting he had personally witnessed Trump declassify materials “by thinking it.”

He wrote a children’s book about Trump, “The Plot Against the King”, pushing the narrative that Trump was unfairly targeted.

PBS takes a look at America's long ongoing history of political violence:

PBS: Over a third of the presidents in the 20th century experienced assassination attempts, and two of them were killed," Boyle said. Activists were also assaulted and killed. During the Jim Crow era, in the first half of the 20th century, ordinary citizens, especially Black Americans, were regularly lynched. But historians say the closest analogue to today's uptick in political violence is the 1960s and 1970s, when President John F. Kennedy, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., and presidential candidates Robert F. Kennedy and George Wallace were shot. Only Wallace survived.

Tyler James Robinson

The Washington Post

Utah resident Tyler James Robinson, 22, was arrested this morning. He allegedly confessed, a family friend said, and authorities say Robinson turned himself in.

This morning, during a Fox News interview, President Donald Trump blamed Kirk’s death on an environment of “radical-left political violence.

His words: “The radicals on the left are the problem, and they’re vicious and they’re horrible and they’re politically savvy.”

Good article. To summarize

Trend of US political violence overall is rising

Right-wing / far-right perpetrators still dominate. Right-wing incidents not only are more frequent but tend to be more deadly or harmful when they occur.

Left-wing violence remains a smaller share. Because radical-left violence is less frequent, when an incident does occur, it gets more media / political attention than right-wing violence.

The killing of Charlie Kirk is cited in the Economist as part of a “grim pattern” of political violence. It cautions that high-visibility cases tend to get amplified.

The Washington Post - The 5-Minute Fix - The Supreme Court keeps giving Trump big breaks

today

This week, the Supreme Court said that immigration raids in Los Angeles that appeared to target people based on their race are okay for now.

In many cases, the Supreme Court has been willing to temporarily allow Trump to flex significant presidential power.

This week, the chief justice of the U.S. gave Trump the go-ahead for now to fire a Democrat on the Federal Trade Commission, an independent agency that is supposed to be insulated from politics.

And the chief justice allowed Trump to freeze $4 billion in foreign aid that Congress previously approved.

None of these decisions is about the merits of the case yet.

But the tea leaves aren’t hard to read, say legal experts.

That was echoing the noises coming from the MAGA camp. Until they found out the killer was not a leftie.

Oh, no.

Now they switched from asking for "war on the left" to "let's pray for this soul".

Republicans have two standards, or none.
