Senator Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo

Semafor - Kimmel’s suspension prompts free-speech Republicans to reconsider their boundaries

Sep 19, 2025

'Things have changed': GOP senator suggests First Amendment no longer 'the ultimate right'

The indefinite suspension of Jimmy Kimmel’s TV show amid pressure from the FCC is prompting libertarian-leaning Republicans to consider redrawing their boundaries when it comes to limiting speech. ...

Sen. Cynthia Lummis, R-Wyo.: “an FCC license, it’s not a right. It really is a privilege.”

Under normal times, in normal circumstances, I tend to think that the First Amendment should always be sort of the ultimate right. And that there should be almost no checks and balances on it. I don’t feel that way anymore.”

I feel like something’s changed culturally. And I think that there needs to be some cognizance that things have changed” ...

The USA's First Amendment protects five freedoms from government interference: establishment of religion, free exercise of religion, freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and the freedom to assemble and petition the government.

Jon Stewart: "We have another fun, hilarious, administration-compliant show.

If you felt a little off these past couple of days, it's probably because our great father has not been home.

For Father has been gracing England with his legendary warmth and radiance.

Gaze upon him with a gait even more majestic than that of the royal horses that prance before him. He wowed the English with charm, intelligence, and an undeniable sexual charisma that filled their air like a pheromone-packed London fog.
...
Finally, a country affording our great leader the respect and deference that any sun god would command.

British reporter: "We saw the dismissal of a very wellknown chat show host in America last night, Mr. Kimmel. Is free speech more under attack in Britain or America?"

Jon Stewart: "How dare you, sir? What outfit are you with, sir, the Antifa Herald Tribune? Why, I wouldn't even line my parrot's cage with your rag. There's a very reasonable explanation for what befell this scallywag, Kimmell."

Trump: "Well, Jimmy Kimmel was fired because he had bad ratings more than anything else. And he said a horrible thing about a great gentleman known as Charlie Kirk. And Jimmy Kimmel is not a talented person. He had very bad ratings. And they should have fired him a long time ago. So, you know, you can call that free speech or not."

Jon Stewart: "Yay. You may call it free speech in jolly old England. But in America, we have a little something called the First Amendment. And let me tell you how it works.

There's something called a talent-ometer. It's a completely scientific instrument that is kept on the president's desk. And it tells the president when a performer's TQ, Talent Quotient, measured mostly by niceness to the president, goes below a certain level, at which point the FCC must be notified to threaten the acquisition prospects for billion-dollar mergers of network affiliates. These affiliates are then asked to give ultimatums to even larger mega corporation that controls the flow of state-approved content. Or the FCC can just choose to threaten those licenses directly.

It's basic science. Read the Constitution. Read it! Look, there are certain rules of free speech.

But in case anyone needs a refresher, we're going to go over the rules again. He does not have a right to have a television show where he lies his ass off to the American people. There are repercussions to spreading lies. Exactly.

And even though two months ago, our president, because of his grand ability to see the future-- it's a curse-- --somehow knew that Kimmell would be next, as he explicitly said, you can't just make things up on television. People cannot just go on television and mislead viewers with made-up crap. Millions of illegal aliens that border czar Harris brought into the country will be voting.

The bottom line is this: There is massive voter fraud. Global warming is a hoax. crime is at an all-time high right now. $50 million on condoms in Gaza. They're taking people's pets and killing them and eating them. On January 6, two years ago, the overwhelming majority were peaceful. They were orderly and meek. These were not insurrectionists. They were sightseers. All true.

Oh, your lordship. I do not know whence these peasants come."

What grates on my nerves is Republicans getting angry about anyone who is either (a) happy Charlie Kirk died [for the record, I'm not in this category, although I do feel for his family left behind], or (b) they don't grieve for him enough - to their satisfaction. If someone doesn't do either (or both) then it - somehow - warps into "hate" or "hate speech". But yet, Kirk was a pretty avid promoter of it himself:

And yet again, there's always a tweet. Better make sure Gavin Newsom doesn't come across it, especially if you're going to say something really dumb (or just outright hypocritical) 😀

The Washington Post - Judge strikes down Trump’s $15 billion suit against the New York Times

breaking

A federal judge in Tampa struck down President Donald Trump’s $15 billion defamation lawsuit against the New York Times, saying that the 85-page complaint was “decidedly improper and impermissible” under the rules governing civil proceedings in federal court.

U.S. District Judge Steven D. Merryday, an appointee of President George H.W. Bush, issued a scathing ruling on Friday, lambasting the president and his lawyers for the lawsuit. ...

Alleging only two simple counts of defamation, the complaint consumes eighty-five pages. Count I appears on page eighty, and Count II appears on page eighty-three.” ...

The judge said a new complaint may be filed within 28 days and must be under 40 pages long.

Reuters - Ted Cruz breaks with fellow Republicans and condemns government threats against US broadcasters

  •    FCC Chair Brendan Carr has sought to pressure media companies
  •    Republican senator Cruz likens Carr's threats to Mafia tactics
  •    Democrat Schumer calls for Carr's resignation
  •    Trump has praised suspension of Jimmy Kimmel

WASHINGTON, Sept 19 (Reuters) - U.S. Senator Ted Cruz, the Republican who leads oversight of the Federal Communications Commission, joined Democrats on Friday in criticizing FCC Chair Brendan Carr's recent threats against Disney (DIS.N) and local broadcasters for airing "Jimmy Kimmel Live."

The conservative senator from Texas, one of the most powerful Republicans in Congress, said Carr's threat to fine broadcasters or pull their licenses over the content of their shows was dangerous.

"I got to say that's right out of 'Goodfellas'," Cruz said, evoking the Martin Scorsese gangster movie. "That's right out of a mafioso coming into a bar going, 'Nice bar you have here. It would be a shame if something happened to it'."

The senator's remarks are a rare example of a prominent member of President Donald Trump's own party publicly criticizing the actions of the administration, highlighting deepening concerns over free-speech rights and Trump's threatened crackdowns.

Stranger than fiction ...

The Washington Post -
Trump unveils $100K yearly fee on H-1B visas in clampdown on legal immigration  (unlocked link)

breaking

President Donald Trump on Friday announced an annual $100,000 fee on successful applicants for a high-skilled worker visa program that is widely used in Silicon Valley, constraining a key path to legal immigration.

The president also signed an executive order that would allow wealthy foreigners to pay $1 million for a “gold card” for U.S. residency and companies to pay $2 million for a “corporate gold card” that would permit them to sponsor one or more employees.

The main thing is we’re going to have great people coming in and they’re going to be paying,” Trump said. “We’re going to take that money and we’re going to be reducing taxes and we’re going to be reducing debt.

Both moves probably will face legal challenges. ...

My God. This is real. I thought it was a clever parody.

As of now, there hasn’t been a US bill passed through Congress that authorizes the full program as described.

The President probably does not the legal authority to create this full program just by executive order.

Obviously the power to grant visas, residency, green cards, tax treatment, etc., is governed by existing statutes

The website and the public announcements may be more about promotion / political signaling than about a ready‐to‐go program. Many details are not settled or clear.

So: yes, it appears to be a real website; yes, it's been officially launched; but the program behind it is not yet fully grounded in legislation or detail. There are many open questions.

Trump Gold Card Website Is ‘A Joke’ That Raises Red Flags, Expert Says: Forbes

President Trump touted Wednesday that “the waiting list is now open” for the $5 million Trump Gold Card visa—but immigration investment experts warn the nearly launched website does not look or feel like a legitimate government initiative.

This is a recent viral video by Dutch comedian Arjen Lubach on the show Zondag met Lubach.

It roasts Disney for what they call a “Disney MAGA makeover.” It parodies classic Disney elements with Trump-style modifications.

The one shown is an English redub, being passed around Reddit

https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/trump-claims-excessive-criticism-him-215408859.html

Okay, this is many things at once - alarming, chilling, childish, ridiculous, pathetic, petty...

“Do you see a difference between cancel culture and consequence culture?” [Reuters reporter Jeff] Mason asked.

“I’m a very strong person for free speech,” the president replied. “But 97, 94, 95, 96% of the people are against me in the sense of the newscasts are against me. The stories are– they said 97% bad. So, they gave me 97, they’ll take a great story, and they’ll make it bad. See, I think that’s really illegal, personally.”

It is unclear where Trump got the 97% figure from. Even if true, such criticism is protected speech under the First Amendment.

I guess the orange buffoon hasn't heard of the First Amendment - all speech is protected, yes, even hate speech (although what he's whining about doesn't even come close). Hell, even Charlie Kirk himself talked about freedom of speech.

But then again, since when has Trump ever given a stuff about following any laws at all? 🤷‍♂️

Netanyahu amazingly forced to deny Charlie Kirk accusations. It seems the various conservative talkers like Owens and Tucker and all the rest are really having an effect.

So much for "I'll bring grocery prices down on day 1" (paraphrased) I guess doing pointless crap like this (as opposed to what people, y'know, voted you in on is WAY more important) 🙄

Speaking of cancellations..some (wrong) whataboutism from Republicans...

And finally, maybe the orange buffoon got Kimmel fired because he was jealous?
