Washingtonian - USDA Spent $16,400 on Banners to Honor Trump and Lincoln

The unusual installation was a 31-foot-tall reminder of how much things have changed in Washington.

12 Sep 2025

The US Department of Agriculture spent $16,400 to hang two banners in May outside its headquarters on Independence Avenue in Washington, DC, government documents show.

One banner honored Abraham Lincoln. The other featured the glowering face of President Trump. ...

As with many actions of the administration, this act of promotion was somewhat unusual for how things typically work in Washington.

I’ve never seen that before,” says Max Stier, the CEO of the Partnership for Public Service, a nonprofit that has worked with Republican and Democratic administrations to improve government effectiveness.

Rather than promoting the work of the Agriculture Department, Stier says, the banners reflect “a competition among the loyalists that he has put in place across the leadership of our government for his approval. And the way you apparently get his approval is by singing his praises.”

President Donald Trump on Friday announced an annual $100,000 fee on successful applicants for a high-skilled worker visa program that is widely used in Silicon Valley, constraining a key path to legal immigration.

The president also signed an executive order that would allow wealthy foreigners to pay $1 million for a “gold card” for U.S. residency and companies to pay $2 million for a “corporate gold card” that would permit them to sponsor one or more employees.

The main thing is we’re going to have great people coming in and they’re going to be paying,” Trump said. “We’re going to take that money and we’re going to be reducing taxes and we’re going to be reducing debt.

Both moves probably will face legal challenges. ...

He's just back-tracked on this, apparently it's only a "one-off" fee:

gzt: Trump announces a US$100,000 employer fee for each H1B visa - per year!

https://edition.cnn.com/2025/09/19/politics/trump-h1b-visa-fee

The majority of H1B holders are based in California where most of the tech and engineering is.

Disclaimer: the following post is not advice, and is completely hear-say. If you're interested in working in the US, talk to a professional immigration consultant, or an American HR department, preferably both.

This from the Trump who worked the system and likely helped Melania get a "Einstein" visa.

While it's true a majority of H-1b are in California, you could say that about any worker, as California is the beating heart of the US economy.

While I've never held a h-1b visa, I'm very familiar with many techs that use it. They are predominantly from India. Every US city depends on them. (After all, look at STEM education for the average American.)

I get begged by companies in the mid-west desperate for qualitied workers. Many American small to medium sized business have outsourced to local consulting / contracting firms. In turn these outsourced firms use h-1b workers heavily.

Obviously, if given a choice, talented overseas workers are drawn to only about 5 of the hundreds of metropolitan areas. No one is going to think: "I want to see what's America like. Maybe I should look at Intercourse Pennsylvania, Climax Michigan, Hooker Oklahoma or French Lick Indiana"

It's technically possible for multi-nationals to get other types of visa. For example, Oracle could have a London office, and get a "branch" visa for someone who has the right to work in the UK, but will work in the US. I'd make a wild guess this is a small fraction of 1% overseas workers in the US.

I would expect that many overseas IT workers in the US, who are "cashed up", and already homesick will decide it's time to return home. I wouldn't be surprised if thousand of workers will be taken out of the American workforce by Trump.

Sorry, Intercourse, Pennsylvania is deeply conservative and Amish.

Hooker, Oklahoma has only 2,000 people and no (known) brothels.

MAGA's Christian mercy and gratitude.

Lone South Korean that stayed in US following Hyundai raid still in ICE detention
https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/lone-south-korean-worker-that-stayed-in-the-us-following-hyundai-megasite-raid-still-in-ice-detention/ar-AA1MQmH3

""
BRYAN COUNTY, Ga. (WTOC) - The only South Korean worker that opted to stay in the United States following the raid of the Hyundai megasite is still in ICE detention, an immigration attorney has confirmed to WTOC.
""
Following the raid, the Trump administration offered to let the South Korean people that were detained stay in the United States and continue working. All but one opted to go home, flying back to South Korea a little over a week after being detained.
""

I'm sure that the invitation to stay was not presented as invitation to stay in conditions worse than a regular prison.
For an indeterminate amount of time.

Also, a (quite sad) story about a Trump voter who - it pains me to say - FAFO:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/his-wife-was-dying-his-federal-job-crumbling-it-tested-his-faith-in-god-and-trump/ar-AA1MX1VL?ocid=hpmsn&cvid=68cfb2c75f9a4a8f8da84f5befe6abec&ei=67

That evening, after funeral home personnel had taken his wife’s body from the house, Brandon opened his laptop. He planned to tell his bosses about the death and request bereavement leave.

He saw an email waiting.

“You are expected to return to work in-person at BLM, Southern Nevada District Office,” the message said. It gave a Las Vegas address where Brandon would have to report “on a full-time basis starting on your first scheduled workday the week of June 15.”

Two days later, his phone rang with an unknown number. When he picked up, the caller introduced himself as a human resources officer at BLM.

“I just wanted to let you know they’re denying it,” Brandon remembered the officer saying about his request to resign.

“Do they know my wife passed?” Brandon recalled asking.

“No, I told them that,” the officer said.

“Dude,” Brandon said. “That’s, like, sick cold.”

“I know,” the officer said. “I’m just the middle man.”

Basically the guy tried to get deferred leave (and backpay) while his wife was dying of cancer and was met with a blunt "no" from the DOGE and the government, no matter how hard he tried. Unlike (most of) the MAGA crowd, this guy I actually have some sympathy for 🙁😢

I was a bit taken aback though to still read about his unwavering support for Trump (who obviously doesn't give two stuffs about this guy) at the end of the article though - if that was me I sure wouldn't be taking that crap lying down!

Trump presses Mute on free speech

The NY Times - In Assault on Free Speech, Trump Targets Speech He Hates

Sept. 21, 2025

As President Trump threatens a wide-ranging crackdown on mainstream media institutions and political opponents, his aides and allies have cast the administration’s moves as critical to stanching misinformation and hate speech that could lead to political violence.

But Mr. Trump himself has repeatedly made clear in recent days that he has a different goal.

For him, it’s not about hate speech, but about speech that he hates - namely, speech that is critical of him and his administration.

He has suggested that a clutch of protesters who yelled at him in a restaurant be prosecuted under laws targeting mobsters. He demanded that multiple late-night comics who mocked him be taken off air. He threatened to shutter television broadcasters that he deemed unfair to him. He sued The New York Times for allegedly damaging his reputation.

And that was just last week. ...

Trump at Charlie Kirk memorial service says there will be a major announcement on the cause of autism tomorrow and a promising treatment. How is that related to Kirk? Not at all. Trump and RFK are set to announce the cause of autism is Paracetamol yup Panadol, also known as Tylenol in the USA:

https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/sep/21/trump-officials-tylenol-autism

The 'cure' is apparently Folinic acid, also known as leucovorin used to treat folic acid deficiency particularly in cancer patients. Sounds like this will lead to what is effectively a very large scale experiment. I hope they have better luck than Ivermectin. It would not surprise me if medical professionals refuse to administer it on ethical grounds. For many reasons there will still be many takers for this RFK experiment.

The NY Times - Trump Lionizes Charlie Kirk and Vilifies the Left at Memorial

breaking

President Trump called Charlie Kirk the “greatest evangelist for American liberty” during a memorial service for the slain political figure, joining a parade of speakers who hailed Mr. Kirk as a “martyr” and vowed to carry on his mission to implement an explicitly conservative Christian vision of the United States.

The service mixed religious devotion with a raw battle cry intended to galvanize the political movement of the polarizing activist, who was assassinated less than two weeks ago.

Mr. Trump capped an event that began with evangelical music and somber remembrances of Mr. Kirk and steadily progressed into a hard-line political event.

The whiplash was most clear in the final two speakers: Minutes after Mr. Kirk’s widow, Erika, urged the crowd to love their enemies as her husband did, Mr. Trump said he could not agree. “I hate my opponent and I don’t want the best for them,” he said ...

This event was Huge and very political - more like a 1930s Nuremberg rally than a memorial service.  The stadium was full to capacity, with 63,000 angry MAGAs present.   😟
