tdgeek:

Nobel Peace Prize will be announced in the next hour or so

Wont be DJT obviously.

As said. The Nobel Prize Committee could not have ruined its reputation more easily. 😁

Nicolas Maduro has been Venezuelan president since 2013, succeeding Hugo Chavez.

María Corina Machado is a leading figure of the Venezuelan opposition. They hate each other.

Machado won the opposition’s 2023 primary elections, and the opposition’s main candidate for the presidential elections.

However, the Maduro government barred her from running.

But don’t idealize anyone. Heroes are human. Mark Twain said "Never meet your heroes." and "Everyone is a moon, and has a dark side which he never shows to anybody."

Venezuelan politician María Corina Machado wins Nobel peace prize: The Guardian
...
María Corina Machado has shown incredible courage in fighting for democracy. In 2023-24 she heroically mobilised the Venezuelan population for presidential elections. However, much of her fight before then and since then has been through non-democratic means, seeking to generate international military intervention.”

Others are suspicious of her ties to radical rightwing politicians such as Trump and Brazil’s former president Jair Bolsonaro, and her support for Trump’s widely discredited claim that a Venezuelan gang, the Tren de Aragua – has launched an “invasion” of the US.

Trump and top officials such as Stephen Miller have used that spurious claim as justification for its campaign against Venezuelan migrants – scores of whom were deported to a high-security prison in authoritarian El Salvador – and for strikes on alleged “narco-boats” in the Caribbean that have killed at least 21 people.
...
Is the US trying to topple Venezuela's president Nicolas Maduro?

This weekend's cartoons (none to do with Nobel):

Deflection on the shutdown:

Looks the same to me!:

I'm old enough to remember this happening in 1989:

Surprised he didn't make it $5!:

And finally, some fun time:

The NY Times - The White House disapproves of Machado’s Nobel

breaking

Soon after the Nobel Peace Prize committee announced it was awarding this year’s honor to María Corina Machado, the leader of the main opposition movement in Venezuela, the Trump White House issued an unequivocal condemnation.

The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace,” Steven Cheung, the White House communications director, wrote on social media on Friday. ...

Ironic & unintentionally hilarious.  🙂🙃

Texas National Guard, acting as ICE agents, in Portland: "Well butter my biscuits and call me a tumbleweed. You ever seen a Texan brought low by a dang ol’ horney toad?"

(for clarity a "horney toad" is an American horned lizard, common in Texas. It's not an amorous amphibian)

The on again off again tariffs. On again.
Had to double check it was todays news not a past TACO.

Seems Xi under present conditions has no interest in high level meeting with Trump.
Though he has personally met with Putin, Modi, Kim, even little Lukashenko and others.

Trump apart from golfing on taxpayer dollar, grabbing gold baubles, enjoys holding court with leaders to show his power

Trump soon to visit to South Korea, would probably like to do Xi as well.
Xi not having it.

Trump imposing additional 100% tariffs on China imports, says they are ‘becoming very hostile’

The new tariffs built on an earlier post Friday on Truth Social in which Trump said that “there seems to be no reason” to meet with Chinese leader Xi Jinping as part of an upcoming trip to South Korea.

ezbee: ...Trump imposing additional 100% tariffs on China imports, says they are ‘becoming very hostile...

My theory is it's about soybeans. China is the world’s largest soybean importer. The U.S. was one of China’s main suppliers; before trade frictions, a large share of U.S. soybean exports went to China. It has long been a linchpin for U.S. soybean producers’ profitability and scale.

Now over 70% of China’s soybean imports have come from Brazil.

U.S. farm states are politically important for Trump. Lack of exports has escalated. Trump faces pressure to fix the export soybean markets in rural America, or lose voters for all Republicans.

----------------------

Trump touring a Midwest farm: “Beautiful, really beautiful. Nobody grows better -- uh -- these little bullets than you folks. Tremendous craftsmanship!”

Farmer: “Sir… those are soybeans.”

Trump: “Right, right. I love soya beans! Great for the military, I hear.”

Farmer: "Beg your pardon, sir, but soybeans are a protein source."

Trump said, “You think I didn't know that. It was a joke. I knew that! On all my golf course we feed them to our grass to give them more muscles.”

The NY Times - The Trump Split Screen: A Peacemaker Abroad, a Retribution Campaign at Home

Oct. 10, 2025

Within a span of two hours on Thursday, President Trump won two pressure campaigns.

First, he celebrated a significant victory in his self-described goal as a peacemaker when Israel approved the first phase of his plan to end the devastating war in Gaza. Just a short time later, New York’s attorney general, Letitia James, was indicted after he publicly demanded she be charged, making her the latest target of his retribution.

While Mr. Trump has sought to cast himself as a force for peace abroad, he is fueling a seemingly never-ending series of conflicts at home. The split screen has emerged as a defining element of Mr. Trump’s presidency, providing ammunition to his allies and adversaries alike.

It’s a dizzying dichotomy that has crystallized in images and headlines that capture Mr. Trump’s dueling presidential personas over the past week. ...

Trump’s actions this week may have served to divert attention from the fact that he is struggling to blunt Democrats’ messaging that the shutdown impasse was caused by Republicans ...

https://www.rnz.co.nz/news/world/575623/donald-trump-says-he-spoke-with-machado-after-white-house-criticises-nobel-snub

Asked about the Nobel on Friday evening, Trump did not directly criticise the committee's decision, but he credited himself for resolving several wars and said Machado might have given him the award if he asked.

"The person who actually got the Nobel Prize called today, called me, and said, 'I'm accepting this in honour of you, because you really deserved it,'" Trump told reporters in the Oval Office.

"It's a very nice thing to do. I didn't say, 'Then give it to me', although I think she might have.

"She was very nice."

HAHAHAHAHA what a load of absolute crap. And we have 3+ years of this nonsense left to look forward to.

I think dogs and US presidents are similar. One year = 7 years of wear and tear on their bodies.

Supreme Court Justice was Ruth Bader Ginsburg was 87 when she died of natural causes.

Trump is 79, and ain't looking so good.

Plus if I was Trump I wouldn't have Melania or JD Vance walking behind me when I was near stairs. It seem like video cameras in American and Russian high security facilities, like Epstein's prison, tend to be flakey.

Bets on how many angry Truth Social posts are going to be made now about the whole process being "rigged" simply because the orange buffoon didn't win this year 🙄

Next year, on the other hand...if this Gaza plan of his actually works, well...? 🤔

It's not even his plan. It's the same plan Biden put together in 2024. What he can take credit for, as much as it pains me to say it, is that apparently he actually put the thumb screws on Netanyahu and forced him to agree. Something no other president has done. Still, there's a long way to go before it can be called a success.
