Bari Weiss is editor-in-chief of CBS News, the division that produces "60 Minutes" in USA.

CCOT/ CECOT is Centro de Confinamiento del Terrorismo (Terrorism Confinement Center. It’s a large maximum-security prison in El Salvador

“Standards and Practices” is the internal editorial oversight function at CBS, including for 60 Minutes. It ensures journalism meets the network’s ethical, legal, and factual standards before anything airs.

The phrase “jackbooted thugs” has been used by critics to describe the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS). There are allegations of heavy‑handed, militarized tactics in deportations and detentions.

Around El Salvador’s CECOT mega‑prison, DHS deported migrants there without due process, exposing them to abuse and torture.

In 1995, CBS canceled an interview with Jeffrey Wigand. The former vice president of research at Brown & Williamson, sat down with 60 Minutes. In the interview, he revealed that tobacco companies were deliberately manipulating nicotine levels to keep smokers addicted

Bari Weiss Pulls '60 Minutes' Report Hours Before Air

The Rational National

From reporter:

"I learned on Saturday that Barry Weiss spiked our story inside CCOT, which was supposed to air tonight. We, Ori, and I asked for a call to discuss her decision. She did not afford us that courtesy opportunity.

Our story was screened five times and cleared by both CBS attorneys and Standards and Practices. It is factually correct. In my view, pulling it now after every rigorous internal check has been met is not an editorial decision. It is a political one.

We requested response to requests and/or interviews with DHS, the White House, and the State Department.

Government silence is a statement, not a veto. The refusal to be interviewed is a tactical maneuver designed to kill the story. If the administration's refusal to participate becomes a valid reason to spike a story, we have effectively handed them a kill switch for any reporting they find inconvenient.

If the standard for airing a story becomes the government must agree to be interviewed, then the government effectively gains control over the 60 Minutes broadcast.

We go from an investigative powerhouse to a stenographer for the state. These men risk their lives to speak with us.

We have a moral and professional obligation to the sources who entrusted us with their stories. abandoning them now is a betrayal of the most basic tenant of journalism, giving voice to the voiceless.

CBS spiked [killed] the [tobacco industry whistleblower] Jeffrey Wingan interview due to legal concerns, nearly destroying the credibility of this broadcast. It took years to recover from that low point by pulling this story to shield an administration. We are repeating that history, but for political optics rather than legal ones. "

A couple of interesting things I've noticed about the orange buffoon and his followers.

A few months ago he wanted to stop (or cut back) the SNAP programme, which provides food to poorer Americans on the basis of...um...I don't know how you could justify starving people. Anyway, a decent number of the people impacted are from states that voted for him. It's another leopards-ate-my-face situation - but I bet you don't see any of his supporters lining up at a food bank with their red MAGA hats on, because that would project his abject failure (although at least one moron did):

https://www.reddit.com/r/BoomersBeingFools/comments/1iq485p/maga_boomer_at_the_food_bank/

Also it's interesting to note that a (small) number of celebrities - once they've run into some sort of legal trouble - basically turn their backs on their fans, and throw their lot in with the MAGA crowd. Singer Nicki Minaj is one of the more recent ones, but Russell Brand (who I used to find quite funny) is another one:

https://edition.cnn.com/2025/12/22/entertainment/nicki-minaj-donald-trump-fan

I'm sure there are others (cartoonist Scott Adams too, now I think about it), but the issue I have with doing this sort of thing is Trump only has limited mileage as to how long he'll be around for (as for all of us). He also has a limited mileage as to how long he'll be president for. My personal thoughts are when he leaves office, MAGA may not necessarily die, but I see it splintering into a whole heap of sub-groups, none of which are strong as the current main one. Yes, James is probably the heir-in-waiting, but I don't think he's quite the crowd pull that Trump is.

Just my 2c.

They actually talked about exactly this on The Bulwark today: https://www.thebulwark.com/p/our-nazi-agnostic-vice-president-jd-vance-nick-fuentes-groypers-maga-trump-epstein-files

But that monomania is a double-edged sword. The exact traits that have given Trump such historic control over the movement’s present are also now leaving Trump superfluous to the movement’s future. He can’t weigh in on questions about what comes after him because it’s not clear he’s even capable of grasping the concept of an “after.” “MAGA was my idea,” Trump said last month. “MAGA was nobody else’s idea.” And what it may turn into later doesn’t seem to be any of his concern.

Stephen Miller's Christmas message: Children of immigrants are losers and spongers. The actual data shows the exact opposite:

Trump wants to end birthright citizenship. The Supreme Court has knocked back the attempts so far. Trump will continue trying in every way as his racist beliefs dictate.

Epstein's lawyer who knows everything after representing Epstein went on to represent Trump and now Hegseth. Two guys I'm sure have a need for similar services and one just keeping that guy happy:

Guardian: Indyke, an attorney who represented Epstein for decades, has not been criminally indicted by federal authorities. He was hired by the Parlatore Law Group in 2022, before the justice department settled the Epstein case. That firm represents the defense secretary, Pete Hegseth, and previously represented Donald Trump in his defense against charges stemming from the discovery of classified government documents stored at Trump’s Florida estate.

and who knows what else Epstein's lawyer represented for those guys

Recent video of Rubio suggests cocaine use. I tend to agree. The Trump Whitehouse has no standards and no concept of inconsistent behavior:

Second half of video reviews previous Apprentice rumours of Trump using Adderall and similar medications. When you have Don Jr setting the standard there's a long way to go.

In the first Trump Presidency the Whitehouse Pharmacy was passing out large volumes of drugs.

More recently it may have amped up.
Though by his behavior during his recent stay it looks like Elon found the sheer volumes available all day every day even exceeded his usual excesses.

I have no time for Trump but I call BS on this. Plucking at straws to concoct a story.
