Daring Fireball: Let’s Call a Murder a Murder

Jonathan Ross identified as ICE agent who shot Renee Good

ICE agent Jonathan Ross identified as the man who killed Good, 37 years woman.

The state of Minnesota may actually have a case in charging him too: https://www.motherjones.com/politics/2026/01/misconduct-expert-can-minnesota-prosecute-sue-ice-officer-killed-renee-good/

If this is indeed accurate, it would put paid to Trump's fantasy where he's said ICE agents have "total immunity".

Edit, just the one cartoon this week, I feel this one is quite relevant to the government's response (one might say "cover-up") regarding what happened:

Desperate Donald may be out of luck ...

The Washington Post - Trump says he will meet Machado - and would accept Nobel Peace Prize from her

today

President Donald Trump said he would accept the Nobel Peace Prize if this year’s prize winner, María Corina Machado*, offered it to him when she meets with him next week, but Nobel officials quickly announced Friday that the prize may not be shared or transferred.

Once a Nobel Prize is announced, it cannot be revoked, shared or transferred to others,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee and the Norwegian Nobel Institute said Friday. “The decision is final and stands for all time.

*  Machado won the opposition primary in Venezuela two years ago but was barred by Maduro from running in the general election.

Another way to get the prize. What a pathetic nouveau riche beggar!

This episode highlights Trump’s ongoing fixation on personal accolades and global validation.

You'll remember during Trump’s campaign accused Minnesota Governor Tim Walz of being “stolen valor garbage.” They claimed Walz exaggerated his combat experience.

Trump already gutted the Kennedy Center board, packed it with loyalists, and slapped his own name on it

It’s the same pattern every time: strip institutions of dignity, then turn their honors into props for personal validation.

😁

Sadly, that needs to happen. That would assist Trumps fetish with trade deficits.

Why are there trade deficits??

Its cheaper for other countries to make/grow some goods/services the than US. Adam Smith, guns and butter

Soooo, country A makes/grows these goods/services as they do it better. US can grow/make these services as they do it better. But in many cases, they dont

Same scenario with drugs. Are countries mass exporting/forcing US residents to buy the drugs? No, the US has HIGH demand to buy these drugs. Im not supporting drug supply, but the US needs to reduce drug usage as thats the core issue. Country A could be destroyed as a supplier, but the US is the PRIME user, so others will fill that gap.

Target the cause, the rest will work out.

Personal experience. My gf and I were travelling to Pigeon Forge, just past Gatlinburg (which sadly was toasted by wildfires a few years back) We stopped at some takeaway joint. An old skinny white guy was wandering (used loosely) out of the place. I asked my gf (American) is he drunk?. No honey, he's on crack. So casually as if being on crack, is fine, normal, like had too many beers. Driop that demand, and you drop drug imports. Resolve the cause.

Made anywhere else but America.

Problem is that perhaps the real economics power has tilted away from 'things'.
Oracle, X, Meta/Facebook etc, Google, Microsoft etc.
Nvidia, AMD, etc.
Even if something is made elsewhere, it may carry technology licenses back to America, APIs as such.

In banking and investment banking the top companies are American, and USA stock market.
Rocketlab had to become American to secure capital and business needed to advance.
Its a natural direction for our technology company's overtime.

America's problem is that its wealthiest companies nominally Red White and Blue to the core pay ever less proportion of their taxes to America or maybe anyone as their global shenanigans amplify tax avoidance.
Only they can solve this one, and its not by persecuting penguins in subantarctic.

Eu is back on with Linux for local Government but there is so much where tentacles lead to.

The Nobel Prize beggar has just reaffirmed his claim to Greenland.

Europe is highly alarmed. Well, I don't think World War III will break out over a few seals, but I imagine the termination of the leased military bases in Europe has already been drafted. If he insists on going it alone, we shouldn't stop him, but we should kick him out - finally.

Looks like we'll have to reassemble Hitler's atomic bomb as a deterrent against Russia after all (just kidding, but who knows?). We'll place it on the US sites that will soon be vacated, right next to our conventional warheads. 😁

Yep.

No matter where morals lie, the bully can work with being stupid as he has the USA dominance to fall back on. Part of his emboldenment. Being right or good, or moral values, not required here...

I "think" there is only  one US base, they bugged out of the others?

Unsure how this could play out, I dont think that if the US attacked Greenland, that means they default out of NATO?

NATO could respond, "hoping" that the US backs down, which wont happen as its an emotional issue with Trump, he wants wins and likes, deaths and rules are not relevant.

Perhaps Denmark could talk to Greenland and bring Greenland in as a 100% Denmark state/province, while allowing their independent status to continue

As far as I can judge the situation here as a pedestrian, it does indeed mean the end of NATO, as the Danish Prime Minister has already informed him in an official address.

If it did, also as a pedestrian poster, would that be bad? USA and Russia have veto powers so thats hardly an equal environment. It would be if Russia and USA were "normal" but they are not now. A new Treaty Organisation, designed by todays world may be in order. When the US finds itself with a normal person as POTUS they could be admitted in a trial period. Russia, i.e. Putin is on his own. As I post this, its seems a totally bizarre post, but its todays reality

Not necessarily a bad thing, if the resulting military vacuum can be replaced so that it cannot be interpreted as an invitation to Putin to ‘visit us’ on the eastern borders.
