gzt: Vietnam vet and former governor of Minnesota Jesse Ventura goes full Godwin on Trump. Ventura has previously endorsed the Green Party and Democratic Party.

I told you, it‘s what we have learned about the Nazis in school and that it should never happen again - and now? He’s completely right about 1930 here in Germany.

After almost 100 years, the USA of all countries is making exactly the same mistakes – megalomania and a slap in the face for all those who lost their lives for it back then! It starts with broken windows and … when the stupid donkey has it too good, he ends up on thin ice!

I'm sitting here, drinking my coffee, looking over at the young people in my team and thinking to myself that it all seems somehow surreal. Nevertheless, people hesitated for far too long back then, with many thinking, ‘It won't be that bad.’ It got worse.

I'm not an anxious person, but somehow I have the impression that we have arrived on the eve of a new world order. A quick question, but not to be pessimistic: do you actually have to go if your king calls you these days?

You mean in New Zealand (or Australia, for that matter)? No, not just because of that. Legislation would be required to start a draft. And as far as volunteering (because the king called) goes ... I don't think there are any young people in either country who would join up just because Charlie put out the call.

To answer your question Tinkerisk, the answer is No. We don't currently have conscription.

Otherwise I think it depends on the cause/reason.

It would seem there was much more patriotism in the past and for that reason I'd say far fewer people would volunteer today, though I doubt there would be no one. If you look at Ukraine, a war that has very little impact on us here, there have been volunteers from New Zealand without the call from the King (Governor General or government). There are people of all generations who see a need to help others in adversity.

In the case of New Zealand and Australia both world wars presented an opportunity for overseas travel that many would have not had othwerwise. For some the attraction of adventure and travel was a good reason to volunteer and this would have increased the pool of volunteers. That attraction no longer exists.

If the call to arms is to fight someone elses war aka WWI or Vietnam then I'd think there would be very few volunteers. If the call to arms was to follow the aspirastions of someone like Trump I don't see too many volunteers either.

If the conflict had a direct impact on us and threatened our way of life I do think there would be quite a few volunteers if the King (Governor General/Government) called. Having said that conscription would still be necessary.

India is in trade talks with Germany. Germany is amajor power, albeit battling at the moment. India is a HUGE power. Modi and Trump had what will obviously be a "great" meeting. But India is still dealing wth 50% tariffs. When the Trump tariffs came along, I posted that friends will work with friends, the expected Germany and India FTA is a prime example. Ironically it will help Trumps tariff regime. He bleats about trade imbalances, so if there is an FTA then Germany and India would reduce exports to the US, win, win. But Mr Trump, they will also reduce imports from the US. Friends will develop a trade import/export relationship to their mutual benefits. US will need to manufacture/grow what their past friends dont need to supply. Another Trump win, lets make it in America. But the US citizens may need to get used to US manufacture/growing prices. Thats ok, they will be poorer, the Trumpist regimes can garner more control. Obviously Trumps regime will be long gone by then, but the seeds are being sown now.

Germany cannot enter a FTA with India, When the EU came about its members states ceded trade policy to the supranational body...and in truth the EU are just as protectionist as India.

I get that, but...

There are a few issues here. He was wrong, that is very very clear. You cannot fire bullets like that, as the public are at risk from ricochets. Same reason why in NZ Police will often abort a car chase, as there are risks to others, we cannot have collateral damage. He was involved in an incident in June, was dragged 100 yards by a car, 33 stitches. Is that a defense of his actions, unsure, but its likely a contributing factor. End of the day he was wrong, and given the stark division in the US right now, much more than normal (and the normal was bad enough), he feels he is targeted, and not surprised at that. He probably realises in retrospect he went too far, or more rightly, reacted too soon. It was a very very low intensity issue, until Renee decided to leave. Then it became a kill her scenario

Sorry to dredge up your previous post but I found an interesting interview from a former ICE agent this morning, he was in the agency around 2013-2014 (when things will still - arguably - relatively "normal"). He discusses how things are looking now and how they could be doing things better:

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/it-s-going-to-take-ice-a-long-time-to-dig-out-of-this/ar-AA1U0713?cvid=6d3bebe79742408af10d2ee78d532705&ei=13

What's the point of the investigation? We've already announced this was a justified shooting, right? “No mistakes were made. We followed our training perfectly.” “She was a domestic terrorist trying to kill people” — I don't know how you could possibly draw that conclusion at that stage. What was she doing that day? What were her intentions? Are there signs that she was actually trying to kill an officer, that she was in that state of mind that day? 37-year-old mothers don't typically try to kill federal officers.

No,

But there is a fairly long list of times when US police/enforcement officers have used deadly force in situations that many believe they should not have..

Some end up causing huge social uprising (BLM etc) but most of the other thousands of other events annually get rapidly glossed over...

German and Indian companies want to cooperate more closely on energy transition, defence and logistics. They signed numerous agreements that are also intended to pave the way for the planned free trade agreement with the EU. Nobody wants to play in the sandpit with Trump anymore, do they? India is also the largest democracy in the world; the former second largest is on an ego trip. 🙂

I bet the Germans do, They have the highest power prices in Europe because they shut down all their nuclear plants to go all in on Russian gas under Merkel and even kept going even after 2014....

They were seduced by the dark side of the force, and it bit them big time...

The NY Times - Trump Says Civil Rights Led to White People Being ‘Very Badly Treated’

11 Jan 2026

President Trump said in an interview that he believed civil rights-era protections resulted in white people being “very badly treated,” his strongest indication that the concept of “reverse discrimination” is driving his aggressive crusade against diversity policies. ...

Mr. Trump’s comments were a blunt distillation of his administration’s racial politics, which rest on the belief that white people have become the real victims of discrimination in America.

During his campaign for president, Mr. Trump harnessed a political backlash to the Black Lives Matter and other protests, saying there was “a definite anti-white feeling in this country,” and he joined his base in denouncing what he deemed to be “woke” policies. ...

He has gone on to equate diversity with incompetence and inferiority, and cast himself as the protector of white people both at home and abroad.

gzt: Suspect arrested in Jackson, Mississippi synagogue arson. The house of prayer was previously bombed by the KKK in 1967 after the rabbi spoke against segregation and in favor of black voter registration:

https://edition.cnn.com/2026/01/11/us/jackson-mississippi-synagogue-fire

I'd be very surprised if the 2025 suspect does not have a similar motive. Police are investigating potential motive.

Antisemitic White Supremacist 19yo suspect arrested. The guy texted his proud achievements to his dad who promptly called police. The father also noticed burns on the suspect's face and ankles when he returned home:

It's hard to imagine this level of insanity taking hold without president Trump and his dinner guests and speakers at the now major Turning Point USA republican conference. I have not noticed any public condemnations of that thing.

When normal people get elected, which is often close, those that favour the new Government/Leader are happy. The others are not so happy. But in normal worlds they are not a gulf apart, just differing philosophies. NZ is a prime example. Trump is an anomaly and thats being kind.

Ukraine, was cut off from arms and intelligence for a period. Abused their leader in public at that atrocious meeting. Ive got a great relationship with Putin, then "he is playing me" But still a great relationship. Same with Xi Xinping. They must be laughing

Venezuela. Got Maduro out, thats great. Now favours that same regime????   Oil execs, when Trump wanted deals today, but a few days is ok = no deal, so he tells the media that he doesnt want ExxonMobil. As they said it was uninvestible at the moment. Accurate, but Trumps emotions, needs and likes took over

Iran. If they kill protesters we will go in. About 30 odd then. Last I looked this morning it was over 500 (accounted for, not the reality). Now its negotiations. ...

Renee Nicole Good. Vides show what that show. It could be a bit against her, or a bit for her, but Trumps fanatics say she was wrong, a terrorist, etc and etc.

All of the above isnt about management of difficult situations, its about likes.

Oh, Greenland. We want it as we dont want Russia and China to take it. If the latters did, NATO kicks in. Read an article today that Russian and Chinese ships and submarines aren't happening. Off course they aren't, as if they did NATO goes after them, that they know. Given todays world, jus wait till Trumps pushes it apart, then pounce.

I will concede that Trump did one good thing. He pushed EU to step up with GDP allowance on military spending, about time. Ironically, that is providing the step to ease away from a great (Ive spent a lot of time there and I loved it) USA

@tdgeek I edit your post. "Chins" is an ethnic group, unrelated to China. I assume it was a typo.
