The NY Times - Opinion -  An Unhinged President on the Magic Mountain

21 Jan 2026

Officially, the theme of this year’s meeting is “A Spirit of Dialogue”  ...

The underlying spirit of Davos this year is fear. That spirit arrived with Donald Trump ...

Wrapped in self-aggrandizing boasts and exaggerations, along with ugly jibes, meandering asides and shopworn grievances, lay a premeditated threat: “You can say ‘yes’ and we will be very appreciative,” the president said, in reference to his demand for Greenland. “Or you can say ‘no’ and we will remember.” ...

That can only help Vladimir Putin, since a crackup of the Atlantic alliance has been a core goal of Russian foreign policy since the 1940s ...

It can also only help China, because a Europe that feels abandoned by the United States will almost inevitably lean more heavily on Beijing as an alternative economic partner.

President Trump came, he saw, and probably thinks he conquered.  πŸ˜’

@BarTender:

And the US leaving the WHO... what could possibly go wrong.

https://www.reuters.com/business/healthcare-pharmaceuticals/us-set-quit-world-health-organization-2026-01-22/

From the article:

"The United States officially left the World Health Organization on Thursday after a year of warnings that doing so would hurt public health in the U.S. and globally, saying its decision reflected failures in the U.N. health agency's management of the COVID-19 pandemic."

Trump saying someone else failed to manage COVID-19? These people in the current US administration are complete turds.

We are only at the beginning. We still have to endure many spurious arguments from this master of lies as he seeks to blame others for the decline of the United States in the rest of the world that he himself has caused. And he will do so. Before Brexit, the EU was also blamed for everything, with proven lies and misinformation from politicians, in order to win over the vast majority of uncritical voters.

What I cannot forgive America for is that the world has to juggle this disturbed hand grenade for the second time because they were unable to defuse it completely after the first misstep. The clown's threats and attempts at blackmail will soon return – at least as long as he still has his military.

Ridiculous and extremely dangerous at the same time – like BatMadman's Joker.

I like South Africa's approach that Λ‹it's not so important for them to make Mr. Trump happy.’ 😁

The president did not specify why he was withdrawing the invitation to Carney, but his social media post came after the prime minister raised concerns about the board and pushed back sharply at Trump’s remark that “Canada lives because of the United States” in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland on Wednesday.

“Canada doesn’t live because of the United States. Canada thrives because we are Canadian,” Carney said earlier Thursday.

And now the world's biggest baby has a sulk and disinvites a country from his sham "Board of Peace" because they hurt his precious feelings πŸ™„

I hope Canada didn't pay him a cent.

I didnt read your post after copying this, but I will in a mo

The president did not specify why he was withdrawing the invitation to Carney,

Mark Carneys speech was amazing. he said what many country leaders have thought, but the latter felt it best to pander to Trump. To get onside, lessen tariffs, but all that did was embolden Trump, I can do what I like to whoever I like, whenever I like. Carney told everyone what they already knew, he stepped up

Trump has shown when he gets stepped up to, his valueless rhetoric is undermined. So he goes from attacking Greenland to backing down to an agreement, which will be what has existed since 1951, but he will spin it his way.

Ok, now Ive read your post! Board of Peace. Initially created for Gaza. So you invite Netanyahu........... Invite Putin the Board of War. Im assuming and hoping that this Board of BS has no power, its just a board of like minded people, not of peace

United Nations, hmmm its not united. It was due to WWII. The world has changed, now you have a few founding members who have veto rights. That was a good idea then, its not now. USA, Russia, China have veto rights, thats not a United Nations in todays world. Perhaps the Carneys and others of todays world need to create a United Nations 2.0 Who are united.

Sham Board of Peace? I hope its just a group of biased power hungry people. Added to by less important people who want to join and be under the main guys. Unsure how that will play out in Gaza, but Trump wants this to be the next big thing, as he has set himself as the indefinite leader. Id like to know what legality and power this "group" actually has.

Yes

My glass half full is this has emboldened (I now HATE that term), EU, UK and Canada thanks to Carney. USA is big, but in the context of developed and developing countries, its probably a minority interest. Factoring in good, right and moral, its an extreme minority. Yes the US is not the only country flexing its muscles, but you would hope that good will win over evil. Militarily and economically. You see Ukraine being left to the slaughter by the US, then you see Netanyahu on the Board of Peace re Gaza

Mark Carney, you rock. EU join in, UK join in

Sorry its off topic, but UKR angered Trump for attacking Putins house. They didnt, but isnt this war??? UK would go after Hitler, Hitler would go after Churchill, its war. Putin already goes after Zelenskyy almost daily

The world order needs a rewrite.

Reuters - Trump sues JPMorgan for $5 billion over alleged debanking *

Summary

  •     JPMorgan says lawsuit has no merit
  •     Lawsuit alleges lender closed accounts for political reasons
  •     Trump administration has intensified debanking claims

Jan 22 (Reuters) - U.S. President Donald Trump filed a $5 billion lawsuit against JPMorgan Chase and its CEO Jamie Dimon on Thursday, accusing them of debanking him by closing several of his accounts to further a political agenda. ...

JPMorgan denied that it closes accounts for political or religious reasons.

Trump has also attacked other lenders including Bank of America ...

* Debanking (also known as de-risking) is the closure of accounts by banks that perceive the account holders to pose a financial, legal, regulatory, or reputational risk to the bank.

US banks have been (wisely) avoiding Trump for decades.  πŸ˜Ÿ

Robert ReichFour Axioms for Interpreting Trump

23 Jan 2026

As Trump’s dementia worsens, several axioms are useful for interpreting his increasingly incoherent bloviation.

Axiom #1:  Whatever he asserts to be a fact is either a wild exaggeration or a bald-faced lie. Always disregard.

Axiom #2:  Whatever he blames on anyone else is something he’s done. He projects like mad, so his accusations are always windows onto what he’s worrying that others will discover about himself.

Axiom #3:  Whatever he criticizes as being fake news is a fact he doesn’t want you to know. So pay special attention to it.

Axiom #4:  Whenever he attacks some source of information - a survey, poll, or report - it’s come up with some truth he fears. So look at it and share it.

A very famous movie scene where two people drive a convertible off a cliff while laughing immediately calls to mind the ending of Thelma & Louise.

But my favourite is this scene from GroundHog Day, when Bill Murray is stuck in a time loop.
