The NY Times - Opinion - The Coming Trump Crackup  (unlocked link - worth reading)

Jan. 23, 2026

We are in the middle of at least four unravelings:

  • The unraveling of the postwar international order.
  • The unraveling of domestic tranquillity wherever ICE agents bring down their jackboots.
  • The  unraveling of the democratic order, with attacks on Fed independence and trumped-up prosecutions of political opponents.
  • Finally, the unraveling of President Trump’s mind.

Of these four, the unraveling of Trump’s mind is the primary one, leading to all the others.

Narcissists sometimes get worse with age, as their remaining inhibitions fall away. *

The effect is bound to be profound when the narcissist happens to be president of the United States. ...

* The jargon for this phenomenon is "disinhibition"

Disinhibited Donald is the ultimate nightmare🤥

re the orange buffoon's "Board of Peace":

(obviously AI-generated, but I still thought this was pretty clever) 😁

It is clever, but its also true. How can you put Putin on the Board of Peace? Netanyahu on the Gaza Board of Peace?

Im assuming that this is just a private thing and not a global binding thing

Commander in Chief, Mister Foot Spurs, opines on avoiding the front line.

The article mentions the Chagos Islands. See video below.

UK PM Starmer rebukes Trump over ‘frankly appalling’ remarks on Nato troops in Afghanistan: The Guardian

Keir Starmer has issued an unprecedented rebuke to Donald Trump for his “insulting and frankly appalling” remarks about British troops in Afghanistanand suggested he should apologise.

After a week of fractious relations with the White House, Starmer said he was not surprised that relatives of British soldiers killed in Afghanistan were hurt by Trump claiming they avoided the frontline.

Starmer’s critical intervention marks an escalation of tensions with Trump’s administration after the president had earlier in the week criticised the UK for giving up the Chagos Islands to Mauritius. On Friday night, the government was forced to delay its bill on the Chagos Islands in the House of Lords.

Labour sources insisted it was a temporary pause because Tories had tried to wreck the bill but it comes after Trump said it was a great act of stupidity, with suggestions the US may be able to block the transfer due to a 1961 treaty.

Starmer’s decision to call the president’s Afghanistan remarks “appalling” risks a further diplomatic rupture with the White House, but No 10 made the decision to speak out amid fury among veterans groups and the families of soldiers who lost their lives.

First step in solving any problem is recognizing there is one. America is not the greatest country in the world anymore —Will McAvoy

That iconic quote comes from the pilot episode of the HBO series The Newsroom (2012), written by Aaron Sorkin and delivered by Jeff Daniels as anchor Will McAvoy.

Here is the video piece of Jeff Daniels as Will-McAvoy gives a defining speech at northwestern on America is not the greatest country in the world anymore. (4:48)

The three branches of the United States government; the legislative, the judicial and the executive branch were established by the U.S. Constitution to ensure separation of powers so that no single group or individual could hold authority, with each branch holding specific powers to check the others.

Trump & Co have been allowed, by the Legislative and Judicial branches, to tear apart ALL Three Branches of the United States Government , therefore the checks and balances set forth by the Founding Fathers. In this same process, he/they are shattering every other Federal Agency and American institution and reshaping them to their liking and benefit.

The Legislative branch, where due to a cowardly GOP in one House of Congress and their individual self-serving egos, hang on to power and an ununified, totally ineffectual Democratic bunch in the other House, have failed to rain in Trump & Co excesses and very dubious executive orders and have forgotten that they all swore or affirmed to support and defend the Constitution against all foreign and domestic enemies, bear true faith and allegiance to it, and faithfully discharge duties.

The sweet icing on this very dark dictatorial cake that Trump & Co are gluttonously gobbling down is the kowtowing of the Judicial branch, which Trump & Co started stacking back in his/their first term. The so-called 9 independent Justices of SCOTUS have been caught up in undisclosed, high-value gifts and gratuities scandals from wealthy individuals, raising ethical concerns that some of these actions resemble, or are effectively, bribery . So what did these fine, upstanding Justices do? They changed the law! In June 2024 ruling (Snyder v. U.S.) drew a distinction between "bribes" (paid before an action) and "gratuities" (gifts given after), with the latter being harder to prosecute as corruption. Therefore, this has created the perception that access to, and influence over, justices can be purchased, thereby impacting the legitimacy and independency of any Court throughout America, Federal or State.

The above two Branches have allowed the Executive branch to totally abused the Executive branch and use it as their own weapon to; persecute, prosecute, bully, whip and cajole everybody and anybody, including other countries into doing what they want and damn the consequences for America or the world ❗

YES America is very fast becoming "not the greatest country in the world anymore" and if it keeps on this path of self-destruction and implosion, America will end up like, Greece, Italy and England, a footnote of "once was the greatest country in the world".

Start learning Mandarin everybody❗

Im going to give Trump some credit, but before I get bagged and criticised and banned, hear me out

He bagged NATO nations for their low military spending based on GDP. He was correct, the other nations hung on the coat tails of the US

The result is those nations have well and truly stepped up. While its not a fix that happens in 2 weeks it is happening, which will dilute the need of the US in coming years

Drugs

Trump blames drug producing countries. well, drug producing countries are bad. But are they forcing US citizens to consume them? No, the US citizens are providing the demand, so as untasteful as this is, the US are IMPORTING these drugs

Tariffs

These were implemented by Trump for two reasons. Bring in trillions of dollars. Bring manufacturing back to the US

Trillions of dollars is no doubt exaggerated, but its no doubt huge. Who pays that? If exporters and importers dont wear it, the US citizens pay for it. If the importers wear all or some of it, they pay, profits reduced, Income Tax to US Treasury is reduced. Same deal, US pays its own tariffs. If foreign exporters wear all or some of it, they pay. Thats temporary. China's GDP met its target, despite tariffs. Many countries are moving away from exports to the US, favouring trade friendly countries, that will reduce tariff income, and US imports. Well if it reduces imports that could be seen as a win, trade deficit wise, but US citizens wont be buying cheap but capable orbital sanders (as one example) they will be forced to buy DeWalt orbital sanders at a much higher price, causing pseudo inflation

BBC News today said many small nations that have no effect on US trade deficits, pay more % tariffs than larger nations, how dumb is that??

In short, US will import less goods, as foreign exporters will export to trade friendly nations. US will export less as the latter nations have preferential customers, the US sits behind them. But that allows the US to bring manufacturing back to the US. At a huge cost to US consumers. With grown foods that the US cannot grow (yet they still tariff exporters of those goods to the US) well maybe those grown foods are hard to come by as the growers export first to preferential customers.

Isolation 101 and Diversification 101

While Trump has up ended International Order, he will improve International Order, in time, and not a long time. Mark Carney the closest and most important neighbour is direct proof of the improving of the new International order

Great post, I focussed on one comment

I dont see self destruction and implosion. I see a world consisting of many powerful nations, the US is just one of them, and they become just a minority in itself. Up to them if they wish to participate with the majority

When the honest and citizen focussed "majority" gain traction, they will acquiesce the rest of those like minded countries and leaders, large, medium and small

Correct. The idiots didn't vote because it was good for them. They voted to hurt the "other people".

They were told the "other people" was hurting their feelings and stealing their jobs, while the billionaires and politicians grifted their taxes.

And now they're starting to whine and complain as they (very, very slowly) start to realise it's actually hurting them.

In the USA the Us Veterans Healthcare is part of the military budget, as are pensions etc.

In the EU, its covered by Universal healthcare etc and is NOT part of the military budget.

The EU is expanding its military manufacturing and selling in competition to the USA. Countries are cancelling US weapons orders and buying them from the EU instead. Without US threats/bullying Australia would have bought French Subs, not American (which they may never be delivered).

Training of EU military is cheaper (NOT lower quality) than the USA and they dont go shouting "Best of the Best"....

USA sets up lots of airforce bases, the EU has deliberately made roads that can be used as airforce runways.

The EU does not feel obliged to set up bases all over the world to enforce its self on everyone else

But the BIGGEST different is that the EU hold a MASSIVE amount of US bonds, the US has been borrowing on the cheap to fund their military , and economy.

Trust in the USA is rapidly falling, and this is going to impact their economy, top to bottom and they will no longer be able to afford their excesses.

Peak USA has been and gone. Trump just accelerated the decline

tdGeek, I'm not going to drag you over the coals about your post. I think it overstates Trump's causal role, coherence, and long-term payoff. And also smooths over how much of the burden fell on US consumers and allies rather than competitors.

This is the weakest argument While Trump has up ended International Order, he will improve International Order, in time, and not a long time. Mark Carney the closest and most important neighbour is direct proof of the improving of the new International order

Trump’s worldview is anti-multilateral: Trump is wildly suspicious of institutions. He loves using leverage and coercion of the US against others, even allies. He sees alliances as temporary, and always transactional. Lastly he embraces uncertainty as leverage.

Carney’s worldview is the opposite. He wants strong institutions to reduce risk. He believes rightly that predictability lowers costs. Contrary to Trump, he loves cooperation, and uses it break coercion. He also believes climate, finance, and trade are collective action problems that cannot be solved by any country alone.

If Carney is influential today, it’s not because Trump reshaped the order successfully. It’s because many countries are trying to stabilize and repair the systems Trump is destroying.

I think this suited the US up until Trump came to power. By being the major contributor it gave them power and influence they might not otherwise have had within NATO and by extension Europe.

That is how Trump sees it.

The result is those nations have well and truly stepped up. While its not a fix that happens in 2 weeks it is happening, which will dilute the need of the US in coming years

That is mainly the result of the invasion of Ukraine and sporadic military harassment of Poland and other Europe NATO members including undersea cable disruptions. If you're saying Trump is responsible for all that, sure he's doing a great job ; )
