ICE says man ran headfirst into a brick wall while trying to escape. Nurses and specialists say severity of injuries is not consistent with that:

"Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents initially claimed Alberto Castañeda Mondragón had tried to flee while handcuffed and “purposefully ran headfirst into a brick wall,” according to court documents filed by a lawyer seeking his release. But staff members at Hennepin County Medical Center determined that could not possibly account for the fractures and bleeding throughout the 31-year-old's brain, said three nurses familiar with the case."

As an aside, I had a look to see if anyone here is showing it - turns out at the moment there's 7 cinemas, all in Auckland. Most of the showings I found had only betwwen2 and 6 seats booked; best I found was one cinema with 10.

Our car is plagued with a Japanese radio we never changed. So I just listen to Newstalk on my short errands. Every day I am surprised by the absurdities some of the callers say. But today I was surprised with an ad for Melania. The whole ad made me laugh. They must really think their main audience is that disconnected from reality. I guess they must also think any advertising money is good money.

/off-topic Speaking as a radio buff - if you need a band expander I can suggest a few good ones 🙂

Seriously though, I can sort of see why they would advertise on ZB (right-leaning), but I don't think in this part of the world - or, apparently the US...or the UK...or South Africa - there's even half as much of an audience for this propaganda-dressed-up-as-a-documentary-film as Trump and co seem to think there is.

According to a WIRED review of roughly 1,400 screenings across hundreds of U.S. theaters, only two showings were actually sold out on opening day. Both in smaller markets in Florida and Missouri, in discounted matinee slots, not prime-time.

Most cities and major theaters did not sell out. Ticket sales were described as “soft” or sluggish in many urban areas.

In larger markets like Boston or New York, advance sales were extremely low, with reports of just a handful of tickets sold. There were even zero in some showings.

In the UK, many screenings had only zero or a handful of advance tickets sold, with stories of basically empty cinemas there too.

MAGA Desperately Posts Gushing Reviews of Flop Melania ‘Doc’: DailyBeast

Melania hit theaters Friday—and within hours, MAGA was hard at work boosting its reputation.

The First Lady shared on X that the film had scored the #1 highest opening night for a documentary in recent years, insisting it was “loved by all.” The movie has been widely panned by critics, scoring just a 12 percent rating from professional critics on Rotten Tomatoes as of this writing. But MAGA fans swooped in, giving Melania a 99 percent audience score.

The film, hyped by President Donald Trump as a “MUST WATCH,” opened in more than 1,500 theaters across the U.S. and Canada on a $40 million budget, with another $35 million spent on marketing.

ICE agent detained a number of immigrants in Colorado. The agents left “ace of spades” cards, “death cards”, for family members to discover in vehicles of the detained, stamped with the address of ICE’s Denver field office.

Warning: pro-Trump opinion piece:

The Washington Post - link

For months, a spiteful acronym has passed for analysis in Washington and on Wall Street: TACO, or “Trump always chickens out.” Tariffs would be announced with theatrical menace, critics said, only to be paused, trimmed or forgotten at the first sign of consequences.

But all along, from Inauguration Day to Liberation Day to Davos, the president has been eating his favorite dish: TACO salad. And the unsung ingredient is GUAC. Donald Trump has been “gaining unmatched American clout” through his strategic use of economic pressure. ...

The White House’s GUAC recipe relies on a premise that polite Washington usually whispers: The United States underwrites the global trading system. ...

I prefer: "Gross Ugly American Con-man"

EDIT  Other suggestions are invited.  ☺️

One WAPO reader's comment: "After picking pointless and counterproductive fights, Trump Always Chickens Out and Gives Up American Credibility."

Loved the video, but closing statement is misleading: "[The nurse's husband] was released because his fourth amendment rights were violated."

He was released because a helpful outsider recorded his fourth amendment rights being violated, specifically her asking "where's your search warrant?" before they pushed there way in, without seeing her husband through the crack.

Otherwise "How ICE is making America distrust all law enforcement, because who's the good cop? who's the bad cop?"

A more accurate description might be “power broker exploiting kompromat”

He who collected compromising material and used it to maintain influence, without clear ideological loyalty.

Never trust a rich spy.

ICE are used to invading the lives of undocumented workers who have far less opportunity to seek remedy for abuse. If undocumented workers have no rights then average citizens will effectively have less rights. There is no better illustration than your update above.
