Aww, I was enjoying watching him getting grilled by Tova. Looks like Luxon is also scared of Jack Tame, too?
The right are also quick to point out that Jacinda did the same with Newstalk ZB / Mike Hosking but the difference here is Jacinda still fronted up to media, was still a face of NZ, still popped online on Facebook Live in the evenings to talk to people etc.
Luxon is blatantly avoiding media to the point people wonder where he is.
Where was he with the Wellington floods? Where was he with the other disasters that have happened in NZ? He’s still going on about petrol prices, fair trade agreements and a new stadium but has not even properly acknowledged the people that have lost their belongings or lives.
Luxon is weak. And this just proves it.

Media Insider has a piece on exactly this today: https://archive.ph/k5au2
When a Prime Minister steps back from a regular interview, fair or not, people read it as a signal about how comfortable a leader looks under pressure. Changing media strategy isn’t unusual, and it doesn’t automatically mean avoidance. But timing matters.
Coming straight after leadership instability, many voters expect to see more visibility, not less. Breakfast is still where many voters see how leaders handle questions. Pulling back now risks looking less strategic and more about managing risk than fronting up.
On the flip side, Luxon has kept his slot with RNZ which I'm assuming means he is talking to John Campbell regularly. I mean he didn't do well either but I know which one I'd be avoiding if the aim of the game was not wanting to be asked hard questions.
gzt: Wanting a grammatically correct English essay from people doing the hard yards as bus drivers in NZ already for several years before they can get residency seems a bit much to ask:
https://www.stuff.co.nz/nz-news/360968313/if-we-could-pass-we-wouldnt-be-driving-buses-bus-shortage-looms-migrant-drivers-face-residency
That said I'd guess many in NZ would take up a bit of bus driving if the hours were sensible without the split shifts and they could take a leak at the end of a run before the next one..
That does seem completely over-egged, the only people who should have to write essays are those applying for educational visas. However, being able to demonstrate proficiency in everyday conversational Englishwould seem to be a sensible pre-requisite from a practical and social perspective.

Is this even a real problem? I can probably count on one hand the number of migrants I've met who can't speak even basic English.

Bus driving, we hoisted outselves by our own petard.
It's a tough job, then we made it impossible with split shifts.
Pay is not that great for split shifts and responsibility, real danger, in a place with very high living expenses.
So its very difficult to impossible to hire locals.
Then you want a standard of written English from migrants who could get better jobs with such written skills.
I too would like to have my cake an eat it, however I know...
Up the pay, drop the split shifts, maybe some council accommodation support and problem goes away.
But the cost.

He is still weak.

He did have a shockingly low number of media appearances as Prime Minister in 2022, I'll give you that.
It looks like part of Simeon Browns strategy as campaign chair is to ramp up attacks on the media.
After Luxon blaming the media for the leaks from the national caucus last week Ani O’Brien has made some fairly nasty accusations about Maiiki Sherman which were coincidentally supported by Nicola Willis.
This could end up being a fairly nasty campaign.

Well clearly he's only learned to be weak. :-D

Maiki Sherman is generally pretty pro-National though...
