Cars have had stop-start for ages, and hybrids thats the natural state of things, electric well.
Where was this 'groundswell' of hate? Never heard anything.
If people stop buying em I'm sure manufacturers would notice.

I gathered if you have a full ICE it could be switched off, use sports mode etc?

This just makes it more difficult to sell American cars 'in volume' anywhere but America if eliminated. Technology regression.

Americans,
Where airbags have to be dangerously strong as they have to account for unbelted.
Cos its so much effort.  Hitting that 'stop start' disable, so much effort.

I will drive into a dystopia behind the dictator who allows me to drop wheelies and roll on coal on my hated neighbors, no effort.
They all want to be the villains in Mad Max movies?

Very true. And...

36%? Pretty close to his worst polling ever, which (from memory) came at the end of his first term after January 6, where I think it was 31%. At this rate Republicans are heading for a blowout in the midterms.

Unless... https://archive.ph/FwsWs

President Donald Trump on Friday posted multiple times on Truth Social about the need for voter identification (ID) as the nation hurtles towards this year's midterms, warning he will enact policy to mandate voter ID "whether approved by Congress or not."
He subsequently revealed that he plans to enact these reforms through executive order if Congress doesn't pass voter ID laws.

What?!? Can he actually do that? 😮

Apparently the proposed legislation itself is unconstitutional in that it exceeds the powers of Congress:

https://theconversation.com/citizenship-voting-requirement-in-save-america-act-has-no-basis-in-the-constitution-and-ignores-precedent-that-only-states-decide-who-gets-to-vote-275658

Who knows. It's clear he'll try almost anything and it's then up to the supreme court to restrain, or not.

Receiving very little attention in the press

Federal court may rule soon on White House ballroom construction: KOMO news

A federal court may rule in the coming weeks on whether President Donald Trump can continue building a ballroom on the grounds of the White House’s demolished east wing.

Senior Judge Richard Leon of Washington’s district court said last month he expects to decide in February whether to issue a preliminary injunction against the Trump administration, which has knocked down the century-old wing to erect a 90,000-square-foot ballroom.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving historic places, sued Trump and several members of his administration in December. The organization asked Leon to halt the ballroom’s construction until federal agencies have approved the plans, an environmental study has been conducted and Congress has authorized the building. The Trump administration's alleged failure to follow multiple laws governing White House construction necessitate it, according to the nonprofit.

“They did so without seeking approval from Congress; without requesting review and approval from the federal commissions charged with oversight of development in the nation’s capital; without conducting the required environmental studies; and without allowing the public any opportunity for input,” the organization said in its complaint. “Within days, the East Wing and its colonnade—a version of which was first built on the site during the presidency of Thomas Jefferson—were completely destroyed.”

🤔

And if I was a betting man, I'd say the chances of them ever showing up is close to...0.

https://sg.news.yahoo.com/taco-trump-plots-humiliating-retreat-152421571.html

A year after predicting a tariffs windfall, the president’s climbdown seems to come less in response to the affordability crisis affecting Americans than in response to how it might derail Republican hopes in the November midterm elections. Lowering grocery prices was a central promise of Trump’s 2024 campaign, and the issue remains key as rising household costs shape voter sentiment.

The president has spent months attempting to convince voters that his economic agenda is delivering results, even as many Americans struggle with high prices, and as household debt has reached an all-time high. He has repeatedly dismissed affordability concerns as a “hoax,” frustrating many of his own voters.

TACO rides again! 🙄

IMO, the main reason why Trump continues to be tolerated by even his most critical supporters, is his antipathy towards illegal immigrants, especially those of color or from his 'shithole countries'. Whether we admit it or not, most of us are xenophobic to some extent and Trump, crowd reader par excellence, actively exploits this intolerance for his own benefit.

gzt: Trump administration says it will end vehicle stop-start technology because everyone hates it:

https://www.whsv.com/2026/02/13/epa-ends-credits-automatic-start-stop-vehicle-ignition-feature-zeldin-says-everyone-hates/

In reality it is an attempt by America manufacturers to meet fuel economy standards and may save between 5-10% in fuel. I gather early American implementations were not great but current implementations are probably ok. This action will not change that. lt's just a weak non-sensical excuse to end an emissions credit.

There is evidence that it is a good decision such as:

In practice the fuel saving at idling speeds is not much. The tests that calculate significant savings rely on a much higher proportion of stopping than most drivers are ever likely to achieve.

For non-hybrid electric vehicles there are additional costs for heavier duty batteries and electrical gear which can negate any fuel costs savings. My car battery alone costs $150 more to support start-stop but the fuel savings over three years of actual battery life don't recoup this.

The additional mechanical demands on the vehicle makes it even more important to adhere to service intervals and specs such as oil quality. Most people don't achieve this - they neglect servicing - so engine life is negatively impacted.

What Trump has done is end a tax credit for fuel efficiency. Trump has not banned the stop start feature. It won't be going away. It provides a consumer benefit.

Mostly the debatable part comes down to good implementations vs terrible implementations and like any fuel saving feature there is a payback period.

As for oil changes and the like most people stick to that during the warranty period and then as a matter of habit tend to mostly stick to that until the vehicle is sold on the second hand market. From that point it's up to the responsibility and knowledge of the secondhand buyer.

If manufacturers really cared about that they wouldn't be putting those CVTs which are basically dead by 100,000km in practically everything these days.

[Obama quote meme post now removed by poster]

Do you have an original source for that? I cannot find any credible source for that.

All that meme type stuff on the various platforms so often has no attributable source. Sometimes it's a restatement in entirely different words, sometimes it's a genuine but entirely misattributed quote quickly lifted from some article, sometimes it's 100% made up by someone or something somewhere along the line. On every basis any quote without a reliable source really is indistinguishable from nonsense.

Most of the Facebook and Twitter meme posting accounts never attribute to an original or reliable source and are just constantly posting unreliable nonsense intentionally or not. The democrat side gets particularly upset by misinformation yet many of those pro-democrat meme accounts or whatever they are obviously don't do any basic source checking and almost never attribute quotes🤷🤷‍♀️🤷‍♂️

The orange buffoon hits a new record!

https://www.natesilver.net/p/trump-approval-ratings-nate-silver-bulletin

After a rough week in the polls, Donald Trump’s net approval rating is back down to its second term low of -15.0. The share of Americans who approve of the job he’s doing also hit a second term low of 40.5 percent.

Those numbers mean that Trump is now slightly less popular than Joe Biden was at this point in his first term (-11.5 net approval) and less popular than himself during term one (-12.0 net approval).

Although it's probably not a "record" he wants 🤔
