It looks like part of Simeon Browns strategy as campaign chair is to ramp up attacks on the media.

After Luxon blaming the media for the leaks from the national caucus last week Ani O’Brien has made some fairly nasty accusations about Maiiki Sherman which were coincidentally supported by Nicola Willis.

This could end up being a fairly nasty campaign.

Maiki Sherman is generally pretty pro-National though...

it’s funny how members of political parties always thing the media is pro the other side.

Although I agree with Labour's position on the investment clause, good news about signing the FTA with India and getting to an agreement with Labour to get it ratified despite NZF's disgusting racism.

Trade Minister Todd McClay will formally sign the free trade agreement with India in New Delhi about 9pm Monday (NZT).

He has taken a delegation, including MPs from several parties, and more than 30 business representatives, and will also host a joint business summit with Indian Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal.

GV27: On the flip side, Luxon has kept his slot with RNZ which I'm assuming means he is talking to John Campbell regularly. I mean he didn't do well either but I know which one I'd be avoiding if the aim of the game was not wanting to be asked hard questions.

He is still weak.

He wouldn't dare go on Q&A - Jack Tame would eat him alive.

Is there any footage from his last appearance on there?

One News Political Editor Maiki Sherman in 2024 a short time after the election reported the coalition would lose it's majority on the basis of a poll at that time. Luxon was grilled on the poll result for a day or two afterwards. Supporters were not happy about the grilling.

Ten days ago Sherman reported the latest very bad poll result for the coalition and outlined a hypothetical opposition government based on that. The week of speculation that followed eventually led to Luxon moving a motion of confidence in his leadership within his own caucus. In the course of events National filed a formal complaint with the Speaker of the house saying Sherman had chased the party whip down a corridor and banged on a door.

Today David Seymour raised a story published by an independent blog stating Sherman yelled a homophobic slur at another reporter during a work drinks incident in Nicola Willis' office last year. The government seems determined to make Sherman the story at this time.

Is this even a real problem? I can probably count on one hand the number of migrants I've met who can't speak even basic English.

A common language is very helpful for social cohesion.

I'd encounter people who I can't communicate effectively with, because we are proficient in different languages, in a service setting on a weekly/daily basis. Usually it's without consequence, other than whatever that feeling of not being able to genuinely engage with a person on any level is.

I recently had an older family member in hospital for seven weeks.  Some of the nursing and support staff spoke such limited English, that I had trouble communicating with them, never mind an older person with poor hearing.  I couldn't be there the whole time and there were stuff ups of serious consequence, including a serious and totally avoidable injury.  That incident is now the subject of a complaint to the HDC.

Fair enough. I don't actually have a problem with the requirement, just wasn't sure it was huge priority.

This could end up being a fairly nasty campaign.

I've read the O'Brien article. The allegations are very specific events and she characterises her numerous sources.

O'Brien sets out what her concerns are, and they are wider than Sherman's behaviour:

  1. That the behaviour alleged (two incidents) was appalling and falls short of the expectations of the press gallery,
  2. That no-one in the media reported it,
  3. That when NZME were going to report it, TVNZ threatened them with legal action for breach of both privacy and defamation,
  4. That journalists aren't being held to standard of behaviour anywhere near that they impose on politicians.  Obviously elected officials should be held to a higher standard than anyone, but ... the speaker sets standards of behaviour for the press gallery too, who are given a level of access to parliament that isn't easily available to the public or officials.

Sherman is alleged to have hurled the f-bomb (rhymes with maggot, not duck) at Lloyd Burr, loudly and repeatedly at a beehive event (allegedly in response to a racial slur by him).  Her argument is basically: imagine if an MP did that ... the press would hound until there was a resignation.  She is also alleged to have followed Stuart Smith into a hallway she shouldn't have and banged on his door, demanding that he come out or Breakfast the next day would make him look bad.

The Herald, RNZ and Stuff are reporting the allegations.  Nicola Willis is quoted in Stuff as having heard the offensive language directed at Burr and then shut the function down.  [Edit: And Hosking has confirmed the legal threats from TVNZ]

Obviously, I'm paraphrasing, I wasn't there, and I don't know what happened.  These allegations may not be true.  They are quite specific, so could easily be debunked if untrue.  If they are true, the conduct is poor to appalling and The Speaker should investigate.

I wouldn't see it as a red-hot priority either.  Social cohesion has been in the media a bit lately, following the recent Helen Clarke Foundation report. Communication difficulty certainly doesn't help.  But if we are going to have an English proficiency requirement for Visas, then it should be everyday spoken English.  Anything written can be translated easily enough these days.  But spoken English helps you interact with people outside of your ethnic group, and also reduces opportunities to exploit you.

David Seymour and the substack commentator seem to believe parliamentary journalists should be constantly reporting on each other's workplace issues, tiffs, and what have yous. I'm not sure that's viable.

I’m fairly disinterested in personal conduct by reporters at parties.

I am interested in seeing the tactics employed by political parties in systematically going after the media. National has started going after the voters they have lost to NZ First by attacking NZ First this week and going after the media, and TVNZ in particular.
