now it emerges that a hero literally scared the gunman away, leading to an unusually peaceful capture moments later.

Not exactly a peaceful capture. Needed to be rammed, wheels still spinning in drive and driver assaulted to comply and drag out of car (there's video and the commissioner confirmed it was that this morning)

Interesting to see white nationalists and other racists don't go publicly about this being in support of their ideology. They are cowards and rather hide in plain sight.

Do not let racism hide.

Some do - check out these morons who've been running a home insulation business in Chch, from vans decked out with the Nazi "black sun" symbol, and the price of $14.88 per M2 displayed.

They've been emboldened in recent times.

Oh I saw those. But they don't go out and say "we support this action" because they are cowards and know they will be outcasts.

Yes - frustrating his hope and expectation to go out in a blaze of glory.

Good Grief!  😕

The Sydney Morning Herald - New Zealanders 'panic buy' guns ahead of Jacinda Ardern's crackdown

March 17, 2019 — 12.01pm

New Zealanders are "panic buying" guns in the wake of the Christchurch terror attack and in anticipation of the Government tightening gun laws.

Following Jacinda Ardern's comments on Saturday morning in the wake of the Christchurch terror attack, gun shop owners - at bricks and mortar stores and online - have experienced a jump in sales.

The Christchurch branch of Gun City was busy on Saturday, with people buying guns and equipment, and firearms owners posted online about "panic buying", where people were rushing to stores to purchase firearms.

Meanwhile, an Auckland gun shop owner recorded a significant increase in sales of semi-automatic weapons, and the phone ran off the hook with enquires about semi-automatics, including the prices and how much stock the store had left. ...

With a bit of luck semi-automatics will become illegal, and will be confiscated (with compensation?) and crushed.

EDIT   This item originally came from Radio NZ - 'Panic buying' of guns ahead of ban

Well at least it's probably going to be about the worst business decision they made of all time. I'm also not sure that the owner of that business doesn't quite overtly condone fascist genocide etc, his youtube channel is revealing - and for goodness sake it has 88 subscribers.

This is why politicians should first carefully decide on the correct mitigation measure(s) to implement and the associated timing of the announcement, rather than making an off-the-cuff remark.

There should be no more tolerance for this kind of vile crap (I wish there was a stronger word I could use). There should be no more tolerance for 'clever' wording or the use of known symbols to skirt around the edge of hate speech laws. If his kind of thing is not illegal, it should be made so. If it violates someone's 'free speech', so be it. We are in a war with evil scum, and they must be stamped on.

There has to be legal amendments out of this barbarity to ban known/recognised Nazi and Neo-Nazi symbols and make it an offence to possess and display them, just like it is in Germany. Obviously exceptions should apply for inclusion in bona fide academic studies and museum exhibits etc. There's no reason to give any kind of protection/legitimacy to this kind of filth. There's no ontological/human rights-oriented reason why someone should have the "right" to display this. The consequentialist defences for freedom of speech also don't apply -- there's nothing that anybody can "learn" from the promulgation of such filth; nor is there any reasonable prospect that their underlying premises are correct.

They are already outcasts. Shut down their business and chuck them into jail. These vermin must be taught that there is no place for their kind.

It is my fervent hope that the law change will allow for every one of those panic buyers to have their weapons confiscated for no compensation whatsoever. Better, charge them for the extra work the police have to do. It is time people were made to realise that attitudes have to change and this kind of behaviour is neither clever nor acceptable.

Yes, and I would certainly like to know the real motivation for buying them so urgently?

Talking with a recreational hunter, who doesn't support their use mind you, they said that many believe it's more humane to the animal as they shot another round quickly into an animal that was wounded & hence in pain, but not killed. Another rationale is that semi-automatics are excellent for target shooting, in order to improve your aim.

I'm not certain they're good or logical arguments, but that's what I was provided.
