It was shocking to hear a police tactic was to "identify leaders" among the groups and move them to a neutral location for "negotiations". No surprise they said it failed, but having that idea on the table was truly bizarre.

They have to consider consistent responses to protests? ???? But why if the protests themselves are not even remotely consistent in nature? This reeks of the top brass thinking "I know the orders I'm supposed to give to uphold the law but don't want the responsibility if it goes pear shaped."

It's verging on incompetence. As is quite often the case with police forces they have an instruction manual that they seem incapable of deviating from even if said manual doesn't cover the situation they find themselves in.

Why were these people even allowed to converge on central Wellington as they did. A rugby crowd at the cake tine would have been more heavily policed.

PM quite effectively shutting down any chance of meeting with the protesters: At a time where we're at record cases they are demanding the removal of all public health measures are removed

Quite rightly too, their latest press release that finally shows some signs of organization and unity want the COVID laws repealed. Why they expect anyone would meet with them given such an absurd position is beyond me.

Looks like we've got our first threat to kill arrest too from one of the usual suspects:

Christchurch white supremacist Philip Arps arrested in Picton on the way to Wellington after saying he was going to a public execution and making other threatening statements:

Stuff: A white supremacist jailed for sharing footage of the Christchurch terror attack has been arrested in Picton, hours after allegedly declaring he was off to a “public execution”. He was also accused of threatening to kill members of the public and police.

Released on bail with the condition Arps may not travel to Wellington. Not a great time for this person to be out on bail imo.

why is he released on bail, it should be treated as domestic terrorism and locked up

The *woeful* way in which the Government has prepared for Omicron and even Delta, means the country will be spending so much time in choas, they won't be properly held accountable. No-one could cover every base and no matter what was done it would be bad, but this will be so much worse than it could have been given how much extra time we had to get ready.

They have moved to phase 2 but pretty the entire IT sector of the plan isn't ready yet, funding hasn't been provided to community carers in line with what has been promised so pharmacies can dispense to people who GP's are caring for at home hasn't happened either.  GP's have been given a loose plan, but it's so loose that things are going to end up going pretty wrong in many ways, and it's obvious they will put that back on GP's (Rather than accept any responsibility or blame themselves) who are supposed to be mind readers and have unlimited resources.

I spent a few days in hospital very recently and spent time talking to both Doctors and Nurses who feel they haven't had a proper plan communicated to them, they are pretty much already out of beds to isolate patients in already, and they are short-staffed. Their biggest fear is the lack of communication about what is supposed to happen in many situations.

You'd think if the government had access to such amazing and powerful technology they would easily be able to beam the protesters off parliament grounds, or was Sarah who posted that shot taking the piss?

Now the police are providing free parking for the protesters. When will this sort of stupidity stop. It's almost as if the government wants the protest to continue. It is a handy distraction after all.

Protesters should be allowed to leave but the area needs to be cordoned off and nothing and no one allowed to enter except for a medical event. Allowing "reinforcements and supplies" in is just perpetuating this farce which risks creating further and deeper divisions within our society.

Tents and Gazebos were setup last night in Cranmer Square in Christchurch. For those wishing to occupy another public place in support of the protests in Wellington. Police are supposed to release a statement today

And all the while Labour will be taking a beating in the poles of the pc way this has been handled.

Complete incompetence on the police part. So much for enforcing the law.

Again why are they letting people come and go from the protest why are they not stopping entry.

It is setting a precedence of hey we can just do what we want F the law.

This is a sensible strategy to remove vehicles blocking streets without escalating the situation.

No doubt a few things will be learned. Overall the police have done an excellent job.

Agreed. People should read the article today in the Herald which quite calmly and sensibly explains what should be obvious to most, that a massive show of force would backfire stupidly.

Outside of issuing the trespass notice I'm not sure if the govt has any operational control over what the police do, but yeah it certainly gives that appearance.

The govt could assume control through military. There's enough mass criminal activity & ongoing risk to public interest to allow for a legal interpretation that would justify deployment, but that would be a huge slap in the face to the police commissioner.

If they're not going that route an entry blockade sounds like an excellent idea.... its easy to remove people who are passed out from lack of food lol. But this commissioner is a very 'nice' type... I doubt its something he would think of.
