Reuters - Trump reiterates at NATO summit that Greenland should be controlled by US, not Denmark

ANKARA, Turkey, July 7 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump said on Tuesday Greenland should be controlled by the United States, not Denmark, reaffirming a stance that has caused tensions among ‌NATO allies just as leaders of the alliance gathered for a summit in Turkey.

Trump's assertions that the U.S. must acquire or control Greenland, a semi-autonomous Danish territory, have long strained relations between Washington and Copenhagen - both founding NATO members - and more broadly U.S. ties with Europe.

Hey, don't be so down. The Iranians also attacked three ships in the Strait last night, and the LNG carrier caught fire!

We’re dismantling due process, abandoning habeas corpus and the Fourth Amendment, and building concentration camps against a population that accounts for less than a tenth of one percent of the sexual violence in this country. The numbers don’t support the policy, though, because the economics were never the point, other than the number of Black and brown people arriving on our shores since 1965.

This is why people are walking away from their [MAGA] relatives and didn’t show up for July 4th picnics, and why the people walking away aren’t, in fact, “being petty.”

When someone you love votes for a candidate who has promised, in plain English, to do something cruel and unconstitutional and historically catastrophic, and then he does exactly that, and they still defend him, the relationship isn’t being broken by your refusal to overlook it.

The relationship was broken when they cast the vote. You’re just the one acknowledging the damage.

***

An interesting (and possibly confronting) look at why the MAGA crowd can't understand why friends and family who don't support Trump suddenly just stop talking to them.

I have a few friends and even family (see earlier in this thread) in this category, so can definitely relate to this one 😞

Great, we get to watch fuel prices go up again 🙄 some "ceasefire" that was.

I hope I don't sound perverse or petty saying this (even though it probably is), but I've noticed that the higher fuel prices go, the more it hurts Trump's approval rating - which I'm really hoping for.

Trump saying he will cut off all trade with Spain because they don't pay enough for NATO

https://www.cnbc.com/2026/07/08/trump-spain-nato-trade-summit.html

I expected Trump to be a nasty grump after USA's soccer loss. Spain is still in the world cup apparently. The Iran war thing and now the Spain trade thing does not surprise me. Sadly.

About the strate of Hormuz and the Trump's assault on America, and by extension the world, by one thousand cuts ...

Trump is in a pathological / systemic feedback loop, with his cabinet.

His inner circle are in an exclusive, closed relationship. They all unconsciously feed into and amplify each other's deepest flaws, anxieties, or toxic traits

In classic groupthink and living in an echo chamber, MAGA actively filters out dissenting information, self-censors its doubts about Trump, and lives under an illusion of Trump's invulnerability. The only reality check is rising US prices

The rising world prices be damned: Imagine how interested an American would be watching a NZ house fire on Fox News.

Being the most powerful people in the world, they have trapped us all into a self-reinforcing trap, until Trump leaves. When are all in the same raft barrelling down a flooded canyon river, hoping there's no waterfall nearby.

Luckily Trump's advanced age and stressful lifestyle mean an involuntarily ejection from this mortal coil, barring Trump's brain being placed in a bubbling jar with electrodes.

Because a cult of personality is built entirely on the myth of the indispensable Trump, removing him shatters the foundation of MAGA.

Expect MAGA and Republicans to devour itself from the inside out through infighting, leaks, and purges. Hopefully splash damage will be minimal.

Of course regarding MAGA the French have a wonderful phrase: Folie a Deux: shared madness / shared delusions

My opionion and $10 will buy you a future liter of petrol.

The Daily Beast - Trump, 80, Unravels With String of Mental Slips on World Stage

08 July 2026

Donald Trump’s cognitive health is once again under scrutiny after a series of jaw-dropping gaffes on the world stage.

During a bilateral meeting on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Turkey, Trump repeatedly referred to Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky as “President Putin”, and mixed up the Islamic Republic of Iran with the “Islamic Republic of Japan” ...

Iran will want to claim its ancient homeland of Japan on the basis of Trump confirming its rightfully theirs.
You have Greenland we have Japan, like the Russian deal with Putin you have Greenland he has Ukraine.
Nothing like having steadfast allies. :-)

The New Zealand US Ambassador a sports billionaire from an oil billionaire family, appointed by the calamity Trump wonders why no one trusts USA. Apparently, he does not get out of the billionaire bubble much.
Australia signs a ton of lucrative for USA deals to buy military equipment and oil and gets tariffs, nothing like friends.

Trump appoints the loyal and to be loyal to Trump you have to be the same sort of ......

Diplomatic appointments are like that in USA for both parties. You can bet with Trump the funds transfers are, shall we say more direct, and there are more of them, but that's really the only difference. Trump may have made it worse but that's all you can really say when comparing it to the other major party. Unlike every other western democracy the USA has never had a party of labour.

AlterNet - Trump's out of ammunition - and nobody's buying his new 'scary' excuse

06 July 2016

Trump has run out of cards to play in the midterm elections, which is why he’s now talking about the “communist menace.”

He can’t talk about the economy, because prices continue to rise faster than wages, which means most Americans are getting poorer.

He can’t talk about foreign policy, because his war in Iran has been a debacle, his tariffs are an utter failure, and he obviously hasn’t settled the war in Ukraine on “Day 1.”

He can’t talk about immigration, because his raids and mass deportations have become so unpopular.

So, facing the midterm elections, what’s left?

He’s resorting to the oldest of right-wing tropes - accusing Democrats (especially a rising generation of new, young, vigorous Democratic politicians) of being commies ...

The Swamp: An Indian Billionaire Was Targeted By Trump. Then He Poured Money Into A Startup Secretly Backed by Donald Trump Jr. | Techdirt

In late November in Jamnagar, India, the scions of two of the most powerful families in the world stood face-to-face. On one side was 30-year-old Anant Ambani, son of one of the richest men in Asia. On the other was Donald Trump Jr. For months, the Trump administration had been on the offensive against the sprawling Ambani energy empire, placing it at the center of an escalating tariff campaign against India. But after Trump Jr. touched down, the two men toured the Ambanis’ private zoo, and at night they performed a Gujarati folk dance, grinning as they moved together to the music.

Four months later, an obscure Texas startup called America First Refining announced that it had received a nine-figure investment from the Ambanis’ company. The deal puzzled numerous energy investors familiar with the project, which aims to build the first major new oil refinery in the U.S. in about 50 years. The company is run by a serial entrepreneur with a history of bankruptcy and lawsuits alleging fraud. After more than a decade of failed attempts to raise money, blown deadlines and rebrands, it had been floundering.

America First Refining’s unexpected breakthrough came after it forged a previously unreported relationship with Trump Jr., who secretly acquired a stake in the startup, according to records and seven people familiar with the company. The new details reveal the role the president’s son has played in a theme of Trump’s second term: overseas investors with interests before the administration putting money into the Trump family’s business interests.
