There has been a step change in the recent weeks with more policy from National, around retirement age and so on.

No one wants to ask the 'so why not just do it now, you're already the government' question yet, but they will.

It is unfortunate that Labour has left it so long to articulate a policy position on pretty much anything, but we might see some action now.

Goldsmith calls out Seymour's attacks on RNZ editorial independence as "unhelpful":

The National Party is tacking and grinding furiously to the center at election time after spending the last three years solidly on the right and often going further right than they needed to.

Oh, they haven't given up on being too far right just yet. For one thing, they have decided they too must have a migrant blaming immigration policy to match their partners. Not sure how that's going to pan out; that's Winston's bit. But also they found another pending court case their donors don't like and so they're about to introduce legislation to ban it retrospectively.

Labour signaled some kind of movement a few weeks ago. Luxon fired a few cheap shots trying to get additional detail before his own announcement. Failed ; ).

Green Party has a similar policy. No need for anyone to vote for more of Jones.

There's plenty of bad policy and pandering to go around

The settings of super payments could be looked at, not sure on the practicality of it, but should people who are 65 but still working receive super as well?

I'm also not against means testing for super, I'd like the threshold to be fairly high, income over median household income, net assets over a few million (inflation adjusted periodically) and some exempt income e.g Kiwisaver exempt from being included in income/asset calculations. Whether or not the savings from not making some payments outweighs the cost of trying to make those savings, thats certainly a consideration too.

Winston will not sign off on shifting retirement age, it will require cross party support and I can't see Labour going for it.

Its easy for me to consider working past 65, I'm office based with no real physical stress on my body day to day, for many other workers though, by the time they get to 65, their bodies may be struggling with the daily grind so I get that "only 2 years" is potentially a very long time for some/many.

Ditto, and for me that's the reason why it shouldn't be a blanket rule. The people most likely to be hit by physical health are also the ones least likely to have huge retirement savings. But I was surprised that it was not means tested when I moved to NZ ... I assumed it would be, like Australia. Although perhaps not quite so restrictive and complicated.

If we're going to have an energy contingency for dry years, I'd prefer imported gas to the imported coal we currently use.  My understanding is that gas has about half the CO2 equivalent emissions of coal. Gas also has  broader uses than coal for cooking, heating etc.

But ... maybe we wouldn't need a contingency fuel, if we manged hydro-reserves better and used renewables (we need to build more) before hydro.

I saw that FastTrack approved a couple of renewable energy projects - wind and hydro.  We need more of that and more large-scale solar installations.  Ideally near industrial sites, so daytime power use is a reality.

It's looking like a fairly brutal El Nino this winer, so the power situation could get interesting.

I think that super as it stands is unaffordable. There needs to be some combination of means testing and raising of the retirement age.

The sooner the policy is changed the more runway you give people to plan.

Fair. Personally less sure about raising the age but 100% agree that some amount of means testing needs to be there.

Means testing cannot simply mean anyone retiring with a freehold house then misses out on Super. Not after the super-human sized mortgages millennials are dealing with.

The Australian version is (broadly) based on assets outside the family home. If you have a million dollars of assets you don’t get super, go below that and you do.

I find that broadly reasonable.
