That surprised me too, I had no idea he was ill. To be perfectly honest when I heard "an American politician [had died]" on Radio New Zealand news tonight at first I thought they were talking about McConnell, who is apparently quite unwell at the moment.

 

 

There has been a lot of speculation about Mitch McConnell.

 

If he is found to be unable to continue his duties as Senator, the seat would be considered to be "vacant" and there would need to be a special election for his replacement. Under current state law, if a Senate vacancy occurs on or after August 3 in an election year, a special election cannot be immediately called. Instead, the seat would be filled by the winner of the Senate midterm election, which means it would remain vacant until the following January.

 

Republicans don't want a special election right now and there is some speculation that Thomas Massie who lost his May primary to a Trump-backed challenger, could compete in the special election if it were held. We might have to wait a few of weeks to see how this one plays out, but some people are not convinced by a photo recently released of McConnell, apparently showing him making a good recovery.

I also think Republicans are trying to avoid the situation where the governor of Kentucky (a Democrat) temporarily fills the position until the election in 2026, because he's sure as hell not going to put another Republican in there.

Contrast this with events in 2022: The federal government executed a court-approved search warrant at his Mar-a-Lago estate to recover classified documents,

He frequently characterized the court-authorized, targeted search as an unconstitutional "raid," an "invasion," and a "breach of privacy."

His legal team formally argued in court that the search warrant was "facially overbroad" and violated his Fourth Amendment rights.

In more hypocrisy, Trump frequently complains law enforcement can't do their jobs because oversight "ties law enforcement's hands". Often he stated limiting police search authority is a direct threat to public safety.

But when the shoe was on the other foot, during the same classified documents probe, Trump actively tried stop investigations. His legal team pushed for the appointment of a "Special Master" to block the Department of Justice from reviewing the seized materials, and later filed motions to suppress the evidence entirely.

Lastly during the 2016 campaign, Trump said New York's stop-and-frisk "has to be limited" because beyond a certain point "it's going to violate the Constitution."

Trump said the tactic was one of the agency's "most important and effective Crime Fighting tools" - a day after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said it had instructed ICE agents to halt most vehicle stops nationwide immediately.

Trump's border tsar Tom Homan had said on Tuesday it would be a temporary suspension of vehicle stops, which have been a common tactic in ICE enforcement operations under Trump.

The agency has faced scrutiny over deaths that have occurred during its activity.

This music video is at least Trump adjacent with the heavily armed ICE agents, wearing masks to avoid identification. It's from "3 Teeth." The Los Angeles industrial metal band "Foster the Peopleā€™s" upbeat indie-pop hit "Pumped up Kicks"

It is a sharp commentary on gun violence and the police state in modern America. It has some confronting imagery pointing massive assault weapons directly at a small, helpless sprawled child, and then arresting her with handcuffs.

The child was unharmed, at least physically

He attributed Grahamā€™s sudden passing to what he called ā€œa problemā€ along the lines of what had killed Grahamā€™s father decades ago.

I wonder, will he announce a federal take-over of the management of the mid-term elections in November (illegal constitutionally I believe as the constitution says each state manages it's elections and then reports the results to Congress), or will he announce a national emergency and that the mid-term elections are to be cancelled šŸ¤”

I don't think he can do either of those things...and I can guarantee there are a number of states that - if he tried to do the latter - would turn around and say stuff you, we're going to run our elections anyway, to hell with what you think.

 

I can easily see someone like Gavin Newsom of California or JB Pritzker (sp?) of Illinois (as just two examples) standing up to the orange buffoon and telling him that he can't do this and they're going to carry on as normal with their midterms anyway.

 

I did see something somewhere that most networks are hesitant to screen his propaganda speech he wants to give tonight, hopefully no one does.
