Guess National hasn't learned not to lead with your chin

https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/budget-2026-chris-bishop-announces-social-housing-overhaul-with-potential-duration-limits-changes-to-how-need-assessed/VRIUXCBDHRHI5KCHO2HVDHYXEY/

Making those in social housing worse off just doesn't seem to make sense during a time where there are so many things already piling up (high fuel costs, high food costs, child poverty etc etc etc). I get that there may be a need to make some changes (no system is perfect), but when you're doing poorly in the polls and the country as a whole is suffering in multiple areas, this seems to be poorly timed (at best) if not just bad policy.

It’s redistribution of money from poor people to private landlords. It’s quite literally the worst of all worlds.

If they said they were going to charge more for social housing and use that money to build more social housing it would have made more sense.

Finance minister ‘regrets’ saying New Zealanders living in social housing have ‘won the Lotto’

Can't copy the link as it goes to another topic on Stuff

I guess this is not dissimilar to Trump saying he doesn't care about gas prices for his people

Give me a leader that cares about the whole population, couldn't care less what party/genre/ideology they are from

tdgeek: Finance minister ‘regrets’ saying New Zealanders living in social housing have ‘won the Lotto’

This quote? https://www.nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/budget-2026-nicola-willis-issues-statement-expressing-regret-about-social-housing-comment/DKG5DIWHE5BCTNQOMVPFSALZLI/

Finance Minister Nicola Willis has expressed “regret” about saying people in social housing “have won the Lotto”, issuing a statement this evening saying she “reached for the wrong metaphor”.

“I regret using this phrase because people living in social housing are often in very difficult circumstances and the phrase I used implied otherwise,” the minister said in a statement provided to the Herald.

“I reached for the wrong metaphor when trying to make a point about fairness in the housing system. I will not be using this phrase again.”

It like the famous people that abuse in any way, and get caught. Thats not me, it was a mistake, and so on

You cant accidentally say that peeps living in social housing and doing it tough is like winning Lotto. That is well over the line

Apparently the national energy strategy no longer exists. Unless someone asks about again, then it does exist:

https://newsroom.co.nz/2026/05/20/businesses-dismayed-as-govt-scraps-bumper-sticker-energy-strategy/

Anyway, I'm impressed the government has a quantum national energy strategy super-position. Clean fusion is only ten years away anyway..

At least there are plenty of Lotto winnings to go around!

Upston wouldn’t answer Stuff’s questions on Thursday about whether she contributes more than 40% of her income towards her accommodation costs. MPs are not subject to a minimum contribution requirement before receiving their allowance.

The MP accommodation allowances exist for a reason, and I would not necessarily want them entirely removed. But in some ways this is even more egregiously entitled than Mr. I'm Entitled his own self. I certainly think there's a good argument to removing them for any MP that already owns residential accommodation in Wellington.

Or their private super scheme owns property in Wellington.

Paying employees based on their personal circumstances is a crummy way to pay people.

Providing they aren't claiming something that they aren't entitled to it's the politics of envy rather than substance. MPs aren't particularly well paid for what they have to put up with, many of them could be making a lot more money for less hassle elsewhere.

I agree about the pay generally: it's not a high salary for the amount of work required, if you're doing it right.

It’s still high relative to the pay in the general population but relative to what other jobs with similar levels of responsibility pay it’s significant.

It’s also worth pointing out that owning a second property isn’t free. There is a real cost to the MPs who own the property they occupy in Wellington.

Yea but not many people have access to this kind of allowance that makes the second property thing a lot easier for MPs than other citizens:

https://www.stuff.co.nz/business/money/101854679/private-super-schemes-are-mps-bridges-to-wealth

MPs generally use these super-exclusive super schemes to buy a property they can then rent to Parliamentary Services as their Wellington residence, said Prosser, who is no longer an MP but whose entry in the 2017 register showed his trust was "not yet active".

An MP's accommodation allowance [...] can be legally paid to the super scheme as their landlord.

In addition, MPs can ask for their superannuation contributions to be paid into the private super scheme.

I'm unsure if this is still allowed or the done thing but getting a taxpayer stipend to pay the rent for a house you are renting from yourself was and is bullshit.

They should be getting the same basic 3.5% Kiwisaver that everyone else gets and that's it.
