What I don't really get, is that when Labour were talking Rail to the Airport, one of the very few positive policies they had, I imagined fast mass transit option. Something that took say 15-20 minutes, not something that will dawdle down one of the most busy parts of the Auckland Central roadscape, taking probably 2-3 times that.

Thinking Singapore, Hong Kong or Paris/London.

You guys are always so much smarter than anyone else. Maybe you should go into politics.

I am not an expert on public transport. I don't know which option is best. As is usual in cases like this, they both have pluses and minuses. Unlike you, I assume the people making these kinds of decisions are not complete morons. There are reasons for the choice that was made. Whether they are good ones or not will emerge over time.

You don't need to be an expert on anything, to employ a little common sense. Perhaps if the Government was as transparent as they promised to be, and spent some time explaining the decisions they arbitrailly make, there might be less questions.

Everything that exists today will exist tomorrow. Adding something (light rail) does not take anything away. There will still be busses and taxis for those who want them. I think Goff was quoted as saying he isn't thinking in the first instance of tourists and business people in a hurry. He wants to create a transport infrastructure for the people of Auckland, to be primarily used in the first instance for commuting. Airport transport is simply a tacked-on extra.

I don't have the knowledge to pass judgement on that. I don't know if it is a good idea or a pipe dream. But it sounds sensible to me.

One has to question the logic of trains, cars, trucks, buses and pedestrians sharing the same place. To me it seems like a recipe for disaster. I am a big fan of light rail, but travelling in its own space, this proposal as presented is not good and it will end in no transport type getting places along Dominion Road.

Think of the pressure that will be put onto Mt Eden and Sandringham road if this goes ahead. SR has been SO much better since the tunnel was completed. Cut 15 minutes each way from my commute. Wonderful.

Light rail.

Like I said, road-sharing seems to work elsewhere. Maybe it is just the psyche of New Zealand motorists that makes it difficult here. That image of the proposed tramway strongly reminds me of a similar one in Amsterdam. It works fine.

How long do you think, using rail, it should take to get from Auckland CBD, to the Airport, should take?

If this was SIMPLY rail down Dominion Road, then potentially I'd agree, but it's primarily being proposed as light rail to the airport.

Not according to this:

But Transport Minister Phil Twyford said the planned light rail was not about making an express service, but about building a rapid transit network across the city.

"It's not primarily about getting people to catch a plane, or for tourists," he said.

"Most people who use that line will use it to get to and from work and education.

"It's rapid in that the light rail line is not competing with traffic most of the time."

Well, yet again, they have changed the story. It was touted as airport rail during the election as far as I can recall.

I understand that may not have been it's sole purpose, but certainly it's primary focus.

I don't see the point of it being used as airport transport if it's quicker to take a bus, taxi or walk.

My wife gave up picking up a rental car at the airport. She now takes a taxi and sometimes the bus into the city as she can work while in the slow moving car park. She picks up a rental in the city. She reackons if she is running late to get to the airport the quickest is taxi as they seem to know all the short cuts, she is always running late for her plane and is often that person who is the last on the plane.

We have taken to using AIRNZ parking, which is a large facility outside of the airport area, you leave your car and a shuttle drops you off.

It's a disgrace in my opinion that fast rail isn't one of the biggest things being prioritized. I actually think they should do it from the shore.

You want heavy rail from the airport to the North Shore - built as a priority? And here I had you pegged as a "low tax" sort of guy. What kind of regional fuel tax are you willing to pay for that? 40c? 50c?

Plenty of tax already being taken, perhaps they could take it from the free for all the students got? :)
