Batman: I'm going to say this.

I'm very glad that Jacinda Ardern is our PM. No one in this world could have done a better job in this crisis. I will give you an extreme example to contrast to show what i mean. Imagine Donald trump were our pm in this moment. Imagine if this happened in the usa.

I had a similar feeling today. This shouldn't be a time for political nonsense and there are lots of legitimate reasons for people to have concerns or be unhappy with the current government.

Aderns message of tolerance and caring isn't one of them.

So F-ing Air New Zealand demonstrated their magnanimous compassion by pushing their air fares up to $800 one-way! (or did I just go blind and deaf from shock and outrage?) Whatever the figure, it was pure greed-driven profiteering. According to the news, the minister had to step in to tell them to quit behaving like dickheads. They have now dropped the fares to semi-normal levels, though Jetstar is still cheaper. So much for our wonderful national carrier!

CHC introduced screening. That comes at a cost to airlines. I can only imagine they boosted to cover it, but exponentially worse than they should have.

Do you really think they deliberately jacked up the fares? It was their normal pricing algorithm.

Should they have thought about changing it in the circumstances? Sure. Was it conscious profiteering? I certainly doubt it.

This is exactly the sort of thing that needs a little tolerance. Not everyone is getting things exactly right at the moment.

It wouldn't kill the airlines to donate by covering the cost. Plenty of other people have ($6 mil!).

I'm willing to give AirNZ the benefit of the doubt until further info comes out - remember Uber after the Boston bombing? Their automated system recognised the spike in ride requests so the software did as it was programmed and increased the price, based on demand, for that location. It wouldn't surprise me if someone hadn't remembered to turn that script off on the AirNZ website.

I think it is despicable, whatever the excuse. Don't they have human beings working there or have they handed everything to their brainless algorithms? My understand from the news reports is that they only backtracked when forced to. If they really cared, surely someone could have seen how this would be received.

I could be wrong, but I believe pricing is controlled by demand using algorithms which occur automatically.

What didn't happen was AirNZ didn't realize and act on their own soon enough, but I believe even without the minsiters interaction it would have been noticed and dealt with probably on Monday morning.

I don't think there is a conspiracy here.

People are obviously pretty emotional at times like this, it's easy to go getting overly accustory and over the top. Occams razer should be applied.

What if a computer normally runs their pricing.

What if the events meant they were focussing on other things like getting people down there - there are other agencies. Getting people out of there and they forgot about the pricing bit. It's totally conceivable they were busy doing other things when it was brought to their attention.

I wouldn't jump on the band wagon yet.

They have reacted appropriately. We can't all always think of everything when your brain has gone numb due to events. They also lost an engineer in all of this.

Don't think the worst. That's how hate starts.

I am with @handle9 on this. Chances are the people who override these policies don't work 24/7. It would have been caught and fixed in due course. Perhaps a deep breath or two might be in order :)

I don't believe they had to be "forced to", the minister stepped in to make it happen faster than it would normally have done so.

Seriously take breath and think about what you have written. Despicable because someone didn't think about changing the automated pricing? That's not despicable. Thoughtless and stupid sure. Should supermarkets in Christchuch being giving flowers away for free? Should tissues be sold at cost? Come on.

What happened on Friday was despicable. If Air New Zealand had deliberately jacked up the fares that would be despicable. Some of the gun nuts hoarding guns is despicable.

This isn't the same.

Old Trumpy would be saying if all them worshipers were packing heat (carrying guns), the massacre wouldn't have happened. The schmuck said something very similar after a school shooting over there.

Amazing and heartwarming to see the level of local, national and International support for all involved.

Also the respect and overall tolerance by our law enforcement agencies.
