This is the Luxon topic so would you care to summarise the National Party's actual policy in that area as you understand it?

I think most people are inherently suspicious when political leaders like to use the word "brutal".

It strongly implies something very unsubtle.

Wong has made numerous statements about stability and predictability and so on. It's pretty clear to me that means supporting the lead party. My view is everything Wong has said points in that direction and nothing excludes NZ First in the case NZ First has more seats than Opportunity in that situation.

A minority govt, that needs cross bench support, logically would not include NZF.

Based on current polling ...

NAT + ACT + TOP <50% (not a govt)

NAT+ ACT + NZF > 50% (don't need TOP)

LAB + NZF +GRN >50% (don't need TOP)

LAB + GRN + TOP + TPM ?> 50%? (don't need NZF)

I accept that Wong says those things: work with anyone, stability, either party etc. I simply don't believe her. Because: -

1) She also positions her party as a moderate alternative to NZF, which literally means displacing them

2) The mathematical reality is different and as an intelligent and informed person, she must know that

So again: I don't believe her, and IMO right leaning voters, should not vote for TOP.

Your scenarios are based on current polling. The reality is the Opportunity vote is growing. A right leaning teal voter who tends to oppose NZ First and favors environmental and climate friendly policy and pro-treaty policy has good reason to vote Opportunity.

There are several former National Party cabinet ministers from the Shipley and Key years who fit that description almost exactly. National today has more or less abandoned progress in environment and climate. ACT have more or less adopted an anti-treaty position and rely on "go woke go broke" messaging for a radical fringe. In those areas NZ First has been in part outmanoeuvred on the right flank by the ACT party.

There is every reason for a right leaning teal voter to choose Opportunity at this election.

Yes, of course it's based on current polling. I believe I said that.

TOP has grown from FA to 4.6%. As a percentage it's impressive. In absolute terms, it's a couple. To change the game, they'd need to triple their share of the party vote. That would be a very interesting scenario, and the most interesting part for me would be who they would win the votes from.

There are around 15% of undecided voters in some polls. If TOP could get all of those, then the situation changes. Seems unlikely though. National and Labour usually collectively poll about 70%. It's likely that two thirds of the undecided are swing voters who will eventually settle on Labour or National.

I am a swing voter and I have settled on TOP. Don't know if they will make 5% but do know that they won't if people don't vote for them.

They seem to fit the "I can't / won't vote for Labour or Greens but given how the current Nat/Act/NZF is going, I can't / won't vote for them either" category. One member of my family voted for TOP last time, and probably will this time too, and this is someone who is certainly right leaning.

Luxon didn't know Auckland rough sleepers had nowhere to go. And more importantly (?) he didn't bother to listen/find out before advocating for policies to just move them down the street. No matter how many people who did know tried to tell him when the policy was announced.

The Auckland City Mission closes at 5pm, and there was no night shelter available in the city.

Luxon said he was not aware of that.

"But I'm comfortable with the government's programme, and the amount of investment that we've put into housing," he said.

Number of people in emergency housing plummets: promises made, promises kept, I guess. Not the first time someone responsible in this government has had to admit they don't know what happened to people afterwards.

The situation with allegations against the current police commissioner really bothers me. The IPCA does not have dedicated staff for investigations so they use police to investigate police. In this case the investigating officers are subordinates to the guy they are investigating:

It is a long standing problem and not specific to the current government. But, in this particular instance because it is the highest officer imo the commissioner should definitely be put on leave during the investigation.

I don't have any particular problem with the investigation or the IPCA being involved. Equally I can only assume that due process is being followed with a suspension or otherwise. If all complaints resulted in suspensions then there would be significant opportunity for the commisioner to more or less be permanently suspended.

What I do have a problem with is this investigation being confidential while the Rakesh Naidoo one is very public, despite no complaint or evidence of breach of process. That is nakedly political by the commisioner which is not what police are meant to do.

That seems like a poor rationale. It would be surprising. It does raise the possibility of an OIA or parliamentary question to determine if there have been previous allegations.
