Good points. Few "hate or loathe" a PM, its just the wrong party that's all. Buy yes, the hate for J Adern was off the planet, borderline cult mentality

There were a lot of things you could legitimately criticise Ardern for during her time. Quite why people had to lose their minds over it I have no idea. It's not like there was a shortage of material if you actually wanted to have a discussion about leadership or delivery.

As others have pointed out, that wasn't really what it was about at all.

If Luxon isn't careful and starts keeping Winston on a short leash, I daresay soon he'll be on the receiving end of a lot more criticism as well.

SJB:

She always felt like a lightweight to me possibly due to her lack of experience so I tended to dislike the lauding of her as I didn't think she deserved it, especially from abroad.

If that's the criterion then Luxon should be worried. Ardern had years in parliament & politics more widely behind her before becoming the leader, then PM. Luxon was a rich white guy parachuted into safe National seat for no other reason than that JK liked him. He spent one term in parliament believing the whole time that he was destined to become Prime Minister - and of course the timing was perfect for him as COVID governments around the world were being booted out, and the global economy was still in the toilet, so a Labour loss in 2023 was written on the wall before they even won the 2020 election. So I'm sure that self-fulfilling prophecy self-fulfilling itself did wonders for his humility and self-awareness

... anyway what was my point - yes, OK, so if Ardern was 'lightweight' because of her lack of experience then Luxon is a party balloon. Hopefully the helium kind, rather than the Hindenburg kind, but I think the jury is still out on that one.

Very well put.

For my 2c and using the same criteria I find it interesting how Ardern - supposedly a "lightweight" due to her "lack of experience" - was (somehow) able to negotiate a half-decent coalition agreement with Winston Peters in 2017, yet Luxon - who used to run an airline (and has only had about 1/3 of the time in Parliament that Ardern had before she became PM) - took over a month to put together a three headed coalition (one might say "...of chaos") in 2023 and seems to be having major issues keeping the same Winston Peters in check.

Luxon is really doing nothing he hadnt promised he was going to do. No real surprises yet, but only second week lol.

Not quite: https://www.1news.co.nz/2023/12/04/govt-says-itll-now-keep-the-app-tax-it-promised-to-scrap/

They said they would get rid of this, now they won't.

Granted, it's hardly something major, but still.

Also: https://thespinoff.co.nz/politics/11-12-2023/winston-peters-rabbit-hole-problem >> not about Luxon specifically, but Peters is still Deputy PM (for now, anyway).

Hello?

Don't remember anyone talking about what a fantastic idea selling cigarettes to teenagers would be because of the extra tax revenue.

Must have missed that part of the campaign.

Yeah but she's got experience cos she's a , ugh, career politician , whereas Luxon, may god have mercy on his holy soul, is just a normal guy. He used to run an airline you know.

And owns 7 houses, like all us other normal people.

Hardly a stunning first, post-election poll result. Let's hope (for his sake) that this number improves.

Shane Jones new sketch 'Destroying New Zealand's Future Trade for Fun and Profit' just dropped. Another day, another snarky email to the Prime Minister.

This is the thing. These are lawmakers, but a common theme is tacky low class language. "dreamy fairytale" There are more adult and professional ways to say we cannot meet the targets. But dreamy fairytale???  Same low class language applies to Luxon and Willis. I'd rather have staunch sit on our hands crow about the surplus Conservatives any day of the week compared to this lot of juniors.

Or let's hope they don't (for our sake). 😀

Disappointed they haven't dropped further given the last couple of weeks.

But in theory the start of a shiny new government should be its high water mark.

Fingers crossed for the start of a downward trend.

It's called populism, I'm afraid.

Plenty of right wing politicians out there wanting to be a $2 shop Trump.

Add in overblown hyperbole to the list with statements like, "Economic vandalism on a scale we haven't seen before" from our now Prime Minister and compare that to the generally chilled out/positive OCED reports written about the same economy at the same time. 🙄

Good point. While overblown hyerbole will attract votes, that's all it does.

We don't know how lucky we are...

Argentina when the inauguration speech includes 'There is No Money'

UK seems to have many chickens coming home to roost.

Aussie is the even more lucky country with Coal, in demand LNG, and minerals of all sorts.
Oh and most importantly Pineapple Lumps. :-)

No doubt the situation isn't great. But this is the guy who regularly revved a chainsaw at election rallies so it's obvious he plans some severe and nasty cuts before any other strategy, with a healthy side business being anti-feminist and anti-abortion.
