The problem here is two-fold: silly newspaper website poll with likely biased responses AND the resulting statistics being presented as conclusive in a newspaper website headline.

Stuff does stupid polls like this all the time, but fortunately they don't report the results in news articles as fact (actually they probably have at some point, it seems like the sort of thing they would do).

Individual opinions aside, its pretty clear that the poll is rubbish since it bears no resemblance to any of the more robust polls on the topic

On a lighter note:

I'm all for gay marrage, however personally, the last thing I want is a Gay poll thrust down my throat :)

Any online polls are really of no value. Properly conducted polls (Such as the Herald Digipoll, Neilson polls etc) are conducted in a planned and controlled way in order to canvas a cross section of the target and produce statistically accurate results (within a margin of error). The headline article on the Herald today for example is talking about the Herald Digipoll, not the accompanying online poll on the same site.

sleemanj: Possibly, but I imagine that the problem of international recognition would be there if it's a same-sex civil union or a same-sex marriage.

The international recognition of current marriage is largely non-existent by default, it's pretty much up to each country what they accept as a marriage, from which countries.

My understanding is that we have formal agreements in some regards to this. For example, I understand that all Commonwealth countries are party to an agreement allowing the legal recognition of a marriage under the terms it was solemised, regardless of that counties own law.

For example, a same sex marriage solemised in Canada already has full legal recondition in all Commonwealth nations today.

This is how I see it.

OP disagreed with the poll result as it does not support what he think is 'right'. I on the other hand think everyone is entitled to their opinion. I advocate respect and freedom of opinion.

As of late, I notice that if you have different opinion to gay community, you are often labelled as intolerant, judgemental, close minded, religious etc. It is sad to see the world has gone backwards

World going backwards? You mean one where a minority group oppressed throughout most of recorded history is enjoying a level of civil liberty never previously available to them? Yikes, indeed what a terrible world it has become. Just a terrible slippery slope. Terrible.
