I personally support gay marriage. I mean why not! You only live once and you should be able to live how you want & who you want. And no one should be able to say otherwise. This whole thing is just people forcing there believes on others of what they think is right. (I feel a flame coming on haha)

How can ANY poll on any newspaper web site be taken seriously? They are always skewed questions to a biased audience (ie the newspapers target market)

jayveeee: I hope our politicians aren't going to be influenced by a poll of 13,000 people showing a majority of hateful sunday-only christians who insist on forcing their values on everyone.

Ahhhh , not another gay marriage thread.

I nearly posted a topic on this too.

It really annoys me how a rubbish little web poll, so obviously hi-jacked by an organised group with an agenda, is then reported as if public opinion has suddenly changed dramatically.

what annoys me is the way the question is written, it only asks you if you think that marriage should be between a man and a woman, not whether gay marriage is wrong, big difference but not to the herald

Common sense is not as common as you think.

I'm always suspicious of pundits who assume that other positions are "rubbish" and resort to insults instead of reasoned analysis and argument. I didn't see any "hateful" comments in the article so I guess that you're comments are really about your view of the issue more generally.

This recent letter to Auckland MP Nikki Kay somes up my feelings on the matter.

Why are you so utterly ignorant of the creeping consequences of the radicalized push to undermine the family unit by backing the basic farce of gay "marriage".

Do you think you are simply being liberal by allowing children to become the pawns of those who are not their real mothers and fathers ? The "balance" of the different sexes - the much-needed contribution both mother and father provide to a child should well and truly trump children as accessories in an age which is becoming morally less and less stabilised.

While we hear all sorts of propaganda about gay "rights' - what about children's rights? Many have now spoken of the sheer unhappiness and embarrassment about being brought up two lesbians or two honsexuals - and how much they missed the balancing influence of a member of the other sex.

No doubt you will also be backing the removal of the terms Mother and Father?

It is very sad and troubling, that today's children are facing a far more worrying, far too sexualised, highly promiscuous and destabilising society, because the old immorality has been craftily repackaged as the new morality.

But it isn't. And I don't think your obvious ignorance of the very real and highly destructive social consequences now looming is any excuse for a pro-gay "marriage" vote.

individuals must be free to lead their own lives, but the State has no right to give apparently public approval to lifstyles the majority regard as private choices only, and basically morally dubious ones.

Why not do a lot more research into this issue? You obviously haven't. The body of *real * evidence - not touchy-feely wisniness - is all there.

thats all mother and father are, a term and where is the evidence that children bought up by two gay/ lesbian parents are unhappy or embarassed ,. i bet you anything that there are more unhappy children in so called normal marriages than with any others. and the morality of kids is a reflection of there parents and i can guarantee the legalising of gay marriages wont be the end of the world , in fact most people will not even notice

If the tables were turned and the word marriage carried the same meaning, I would be pretty pissed off about not being able to marry my future wife because parliament believed our love and commitment was not as good as somebody else's.

How can a poll like this be any worth when the majority of people feel they will be unaffected by a law change and wouldn't even register a vote to say they didn't care.?

And a BIG thumbs down for the Winston First Party - I hope the current political poll is relevant with NZFirst on 2.5%. lol  They should stop sitting on the referendum fence, trying to gain some selfish political advantage although it doesn't look like that is working for them. rofl

I think you may find what people will say out loud and what they will vote for anonymously are different. I know plenty of people who don't support it, but feel that saying so in public will affect their standings at their jobs, and communities.

You hope politicians will not be influenced by the majority? That would be anti democratic.....

Incidentally, the Herald, and other sites have held polls concerning the same issue, highlighting support of gay marriage by the majority. Did you disagree with the polls then?

a gay website should run a poll, then the government should base its decision on those results.

Wasn't it a Herald Digipoll, rather than just a poll on their website? I don't have any reason to doubt the poll is reasonably accurate, but I believe it is the FUD campaign by the likes of Family First (I find this name ironic) and churches have scared people.

The 'won't someone think of the children' argument doesn't belong in the SSM debate.

Firstly, Marriage law says nothing about children. There is nothing in the law now to say that Marriage is a requirement for having children, and this isn't going to change. If this is REALLY your argument, what you should be fighting for is the banning of divorce, sex out of wedlock, adoption by single persons etc etc. 1893 called. They want their argument back

Secondly, if you REALLY CARE ABOUT THE CHILDREN, how about you stand up and fight for the 50,000+ children who are present during family violence situations EVERY YEAR where police are called to attend. 50,000! FIFTY THOUSAND CHILDREN.

And 99%+ of those children do not have same-sex parents.

This law is not about adoption or the raising of children. These days, there are only around 100 children adopted in New Zealand each year. And only a fraction of those, if any, are adopted by same sex parents. This law doesn't allow same sex parents to go around snatching children out of the arms of the same sex parents en mass - so please stop pretenting this is an argument against same sex marriage.

If you really care about children - what are you doing to help the 50,000+ I mentioned about who are being abused at the hands of their heterosexual parents?
