40 minutes Wellington to Nelson, 20 minutes Wellington Blenheim, 35 - 60 minutes Wellington Christchurch. Want to have a slower relaxing cruise south take the ferry its a fun start to a holiday

Its a once in a lifetime event as far as I am concerned. 3 1/2 hours is a long time just to get to the South Island. Maybe one day when I retire I will appreciate it a little more. Right now we rather just fly to the SI and rent a car (far cheaper), and faster.

We fly and rent, being very frequent flyers and car renters has advantages, when we are older we will be Cruising on the Interislander......occasionally

Not everybody takes the ferry for pleasure. I found it a big fat waste of time when driving for work.

The first time was great, the 10th less so :-)

Most of the posters in this thread are just like chimpanzees on MDMA, full of feelings of bonhomie, joy, and optimism. Fred99 8/4/21

I can understand that but there really isn't a viable alternative. The geology of the sea bed makes it unsuitable for a tunnel or bridge. The later would be very difficult due to weather and sea conditions in the strait. Faster ferries could be used if these did not need to enter the sounds or Wellington harbour

Your choice. Fly, its cheap, or fund a how many billion dollar bridge? You do the math. And a bridge for tunnel will never happen, as a hint of cost.

That's my point. The ferry trip is a tortuous path and far from the shortest route. It must be possible to move at least one of the terminals to a much nearer point.

More ferries? Bridge and tunnels are a bizarre idea.

The Channel Tunnel has never turned a profit, despite having a much larger population than NZ will ever have on both sides of it. Even if a Cook Straight tunnel were technically feasible, it'd be a huge white elephant.

Would probably just get clogged up by trucks anyway. I'm sure the freight industry would love it if it became an actual idea, and yet would have no interest in contributing to the cost lol.
