One source cautioned that a report was still being prepared and could change, CNN said. The other source said the report would likely conclude that the operation was carried out without clearance and that those involved will be held responsible, the news outlet said

Looks like the Saudi's have realised it is best to admit that it occurred and find a scapegoat which comes back to my earlier comment that the team who did this (if true) was at risk even if they were ordered too

Problem is that "these kinds of things" are also routine "business".

So the WaPo has been given copies of passports of 7 Saudis (of possibly 15) Saudis who flew in to Istanbul - and out again - on the day Khashoggi was killed. Saudi media are referring to them as "tourists". (It's about 4 1/2 hours each way - 9 hours return seems a bit much for a day trip). The Saudi consul has left Istanbul.

Khashoggi was going to be there on the day, pre-arranged as he'd visited the embassy in September to request a copy of a divorce certificate (he was intending to re-marry), to be told that he'd have to return on 2 October (the day he was killed) to collect it.

There are still reports that there was in fact audio recorded on his apple watch, detailing how he was dragged into a room, put on a table, drugged, then dismembered.

Ironically and sadly J Khashoogi has inadvertantly drawn more attention of recent to the Saudi regime then any number of NGOs calls of attention to what is going on in Yemen

Putin will be laughing his head off. Worshipped by Trump despite killing a few hundred journalists, now Trump's relationship with SA is under pressure because they killed one.
I understand that in the wake of this, some official in SA suggested that if the US sanction them, then Russia could be allowed to set up a permanent military base in SA.

Looks like the Saudi's are working on who the scapegoat can be to try and placate everyone and protect the King and in particular the Prince

I suspect (or rather assume) Turkey and the US will also be both using this as opportunity to achieve other goals too

In short Saudi is looking to minimise damage and Turkey to take advantage of it

Well that is what their state controlled media are saying and it is to be expected they would take the mildest view, let us see how the world responds esp. Turkey and what if any real consequences occur e.g. whether the Saudi's will hand over those who carried out this for trial. I expect the Saudi's will be offering lots of 'concessions' to the US and Turkey to take the heat out...

And lots of unanswered questions too, presumably they will now say where the 'body' is?

I can't really get wound up about this poor guys demise because governments have been killing opponents around the world like this since the beginning of time and 99 times out of a 100 there are no dissenting voices.

Some are blatant like this one to send a message and others fly under the radar.

The list of countries that haven't done it will be pretty short.

Agreed in that if this wasn't done so blatantly (which suggest arrogance in addition to incompetence) i.e. he had a 'car accident' few would pay attention

Some good may come of it as it raises the spotlight on a number points such as

The nature of the Saudi regime i.e. human rights (rated among the worse in the world), the war in Yemen
The US relationship with Saudi
Maybe a positive shift in the political dynamics of the region? (good on Turkey for not caving into pressure or a cover-up...so far)
The safety of journalists

Let's see what response NZ takes (if anything) over the next few days or weeks
