So when is the Goff Tax (Auckland Regional Fuel Tax) going to be removed? Surely drastic fiscal times mean this should be gone forthwith?
Muhammed Bin Saud removed it for them. Did you notice?
GV27:
Handle9: $7.9 billion dollars of direct and indirect government assistance to keep those people working and a 0.75% interest rate cut is nothing?
The RBNZ cut the OCR, not the government. Also, if you're on a fixed mortgage, you have to break to get a reduced rates, and that costs money. Also, fixed rates haven't really moved at all. Something like 80% of retail mortgage lending is on a fixed-term basis so...
The assistance is for businesses to keep people working, not much use if you end up getting laid off anyway and still have a mortgage to pay.
The Reserve Bank and the government are working in concert. They have to and they are aligned about what needs to happen (which is very encouraging).
Banks are going to be very forgiving over this period - they can't afford not to be. If they take a hard line they will make the recession much worse and ultimately they need everyone to pay their mortgages, even if the payments are late.

I certainly noticed the drop in the pump price now that oil is $US20/bbl. In Auckland, pretty much half the price per litre is tax. I also noticed a lot of hand wringing about the affect on our poorest citizens that the inevitable recession will have. At least Twyford has said petrol taxes aren’t going up at the moment.

After yet another ridiculous question by a One News reporter to the PM tonight.
”Prime Minister, I see you flew to Rotorua on an Air Force aircraft. Why didn’t you travel commercially?”
Maybe because she is a busy woman at the moment, you idiot.
Possibly it’s time to allow the Diplomatic Protection Squad to be able to Taser reporters who waste the PM’s time. /joking (a bit)
Note: I wasn’t sure whether to post this in the virus thread, the little things that annoy me, stupid Herald and Stuff headlines, or this one.

Hooton (who is a peculiar fish) made a very concerning statement in his column today.
Some in National, including many in its increasingly powerful evangelical wing in Parliament, believe Covid-19 has been overblown, either because of God's promise to Noah or because they think it will turn out just to be another Sars or Y2K. Trying to appease this faction makes Bridges sound incoherent.
If this is the case the national party is going in a horrible direction.

A lot of their selections at the moment seem to be promoting old-school conservatives over Kaye/Key type liberals.

I wouldn't call these old-school conservatives. IMO generally old school conservatives care about the economy and social order not religion.
This seems to be more US style evangelicals.
National cancelled campaigning.
Parliament will not reconvene now - MPs asked not to travel to Wellington.

Our system of government may have its shortcomings, but look at the logjam in the US at the moment that is delaying their reaction. Consensus politics here works when it really matters.
The coulda, woulda, shoulda analysis will come later, but for now our representatives have done the best thing for all of us.

Americans are so screwed. Trumpers will be dying and still claim it's a hoax.

A little off-topic, but how good was the goverment's UFB initiative. Fibre to the house for so many people now to facilitate working from home. I expect it could (would?) have been a lot more cumbersome on congested DSL circuits.
Sometimes I use big words I don't always fully understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

Probably, but this particular screw up is in the House, not the executive. Good old partisan politics standing in the way of saving people’s lives and livelihoods.

It's not just the Republicans either - both sides are playing games. Their system is screwed with ill will.

I don't think you are following - the house problem is because Republicans wanted a help line for businesses, in secret for six months with nothing for John Doe on the street.
But what I am referring about here is the terrible performance by Trump who initially said the virus was a Democrats' Hoax, then ignored scientific and medical advice and even started talking about some medicines - so much so that one man has died in Arizona this week by taking said medicine and the wife's in ICU - and she said "I saw Trump on TV saying this is a good medicine and we of course had to have it"
