MikeAqua:

I think Bridges has proven the Peter principle.

As one of the so called 'Young Guns' on breakfast TV (with Ardern) he came across well and was generally pretty sharp.  As a former crown prosecutor he had to be articulate and think on his feet.  These days he seems to have lost any x-factor he once had. He doesn't have the same alacrity and at times he seems to struggle to state a clear position on simple questions. He almost seems afraid to give a definitive answer some of the time.

Put simply I think he has risen to position he isn't competent in.

I don't see how any opposition leader could make a dent right now.  People don't actually value an opposition in times of crisis.

I agree. I'm fairly confident that Bridges is a very smart hard working guy and I don't really question his motives. He's probably fairly likable in person. I don't agree with many of his principles and policies but that isn't his problem.

He's just not a very good leader. It's just not in him.

It's really hard to see why there are complaints about Nationals lack of diversity.

Congratulations you found 4 middle aged balding white guys out of a caucus of 55 (plus one candidate).

If 1% can pick out Mueller I’d be surprised. By the way the guy challenging Bridges for the leadership is Todd Muller.

I don't think so. There's a caucus vote tomorrow and then it gets announced. Where did the 2 days thing come from?

Also mercenary Mark Mitchell might be throwing his hat in the ring.

There really is no better entertainment than a political leadership contest.

Never mind I read it wrong lol they have 2 days to decide from when being told.

National's emergency vote will be held at midday on Friday, meaning MPs have less than two days to decide who they want in the top job.

Surprised why nobody has mentioned Christopher Luxon yet. I reckon he's as close to JK the National party ever gonna get this time around. Muller looks strong too.

@JaseNZ

I thought if anything the recent events would bring him more to the front. Even JK sort of recommended him-

https://www.newshub.co.nz/home/politics/2020/04/christopher-luxon-would-be-prime-minister-with-economic-focus-sir-john-key.html

To be honest I secretly wish Jacinda was in National. At this stage can't see anyone in National who can go against the charm of Jacinda.

Luxon is missing a fairly important qualification to lead the parliamentary party. He's not a member of the parliament.
