Rikkitic:

Aren't you a little quick to forget how the Taliban behaved the last time they were in charge? There are cultural norms and there are civilised norms. Some things are wrong regardless of the lens you view them through. I just hope this new generation is more moderate than the last one. There is nothing wrong with a conservative Islamic state if that is what people accept. There is a lot wrong with another ISIS-style murder and beheading regime.

No, I am not quick to forget, but we have no evidence that this is how they will run things this time around, but regardless, if they do, is the US supposed to stay in Afghanistan forever?

If the US hadn't been there for the past 20 years (whether you agree with the decision or not) then those things would have been happening the past 20 years.

Presumably accurate reports that they have already ordered women home from all workplaces.

Yeah, I wonder if that will last :)

Taliban have cordoned off the airport to block off Afghans trying to flee.

The airport is back in operation, but that report (on Al Jazeera) doesn't seem to offer much hope for evacuation of Afghani nationals at risk.

Presumably the intention is that it will last "forever".

I doubt that. I guess we will see.

There's nothing to doubt - of course that's their intention.

How their version of Islamic law will be implemented (and how long that may last) might be in doubt, but that they intend to implement it is 100%.

/me shrugs, it's much less of an issue if it's short-term.

Even Saudi Arabia now allow women to drive.

The Global Times, a tabloid controlled by the Chinese Communist Party, warned Taiwan on Monday it could face the same fate as Afghanistan if it continued relying on the United States as an ally.

Apparently Russians feel safe now in Kabul and not evacuating.

i know very little about Taiwan's history. I tried, but don't get it. So China wants to play Taliban and take over Taiwan, they've always wanted to do that. Just waiting for the right time.

from the start of the saga I've had this feeling that the Taliban are being empowered by an external force ... don't want to name names until/unless it's out there

So far almost all of the comments and claims made by "official" Taliban leaders, as well as credible reports from the ground, seem to indicate that Taliban 2021 is far removed from Taliban 1996-01.

They claim they want an open press, they want women involved in government, won't be excluded from education. They claim they want minorities represented in government, and they claim that Afghanistan will not be used to launch attacks on any other country.  They also claim that there's an amnesty, and have forbidden their soldiers from entering private homes.

Talk is cheap, however. Let's see if they stand by their words.

By pure coincidence, I'm reading Fear by Bob Woodward at the moment, detailing Trump's time in the White House. This passage rang true when I read it this morning:
