IMO while there's probably some overreaction by some of the media, I'm disappointed that the mainstream media took so long and "held back" from calling it as it was long ago - in the early stages of the election campaign.

Apart from the long-term racism, misogyny, abusive behaviour - which appears to be taken by many apologists as "subjective" in a "hey we're all a bit racist/sexist aren't we" kind of way, and anyway "all this PC crap hinders free speech" blah blah - Trump is a dirty serial liar.

The MSM didn't start calling him a liar until after the election.  Far too polite IMO.

Yes, the press over reaction and tendency for soap opera could cause the general population to switch off which is a risk.

Only ~ 55% participation in such a significant election suggests to me that many of the general population in the US switched off a long time ago.

WTF happened?

Fatigue / sense of powerlessness - that an individual can make a difference?

IIRC the young (under 30 yo) are significantly over-represented "non voters" (in NZ too). God help them - it's more their future than mine (as an older person).

I've never not voted in a NZ general election.

Trump's decision to start his 2020 election campaign immediately is very clever:

  •     He is a lousy administrator, but a great campaigner.
  •     While he is campaigning, the public may be distracted from his poor Presidential performance.
  •     While he is campaigning, he can tell all the lies he wants and enjoy being outrageous - this will be considered "normal" behavior by the faithful.
  •     And best of all, he can take large "campaign contributions" as bribes whilst in office, and its all legit.  wink

Well - he just 'created' a non-existent attack in Sweden to justify his presidency.

I would like to know from MikeB4 and any who agree with him if he also thinks George Takei is 'overreacting'.

http://edition.cnn.com/2017/02/18/opinions/george-takei-japanese-american-internment-day-of-remembrance/index.html

I see it as over reacting. That was a different time and a different place in history. Japan was at war with the US and allies in the Pacific beginning about a year earlier.

Not saying it was right, but George is overreacting. Whether he believes it, or whether its "news" I don't know. Trumps ban was wrong, but it's a LONG way from the internments in 1942

I believe he sees it as a dangerous step in that direction, as do I. Time will tell if he is right. I hope not. Thanks for offering your opinion.

The over reactions and drama reporting is going to turn a lot of people off, in a way it is like the boy who cried wolf thing. In saying this I am not saying I support Trump in his actions. I have very precise views on this man, but to date he has done what he said he would do during the campaign

and presumably he is doing what the electorate that voted for want him to do. Fore warned should have motivated more folks, it didn't so in fours years it will be wake time.

With the press being drama merchants and the increase crowd of amateur psychologists and psychiatrists jumping in a point of saturation could be reached and the public and thus the US electorate will switch off and that is not a good position.

He needs to step out of campaign mode and into being President. This may remove the catalyst to some of his gaffs, he also needs to fire some of his advisers whom I think are setting him up.

I don't know that the press are 'drama merchants'. Are they? All of them or just some sections? Which sections? Some citations might be helpful.

I don't know that Trump has a grand plan to eliminate democracy and take over the USA. But if he does, this is the way to go about it. First you undermine public confidence in the media by portraying them as ' drama merchants'. After people have turned off and the media you disapprove of have lost public and financial support, you can easily remove them. Once all critical voices are gone, there is nothing left to stop you from doing whatever else you like. This is the lesson of history. Ignore it if you will.

Mr Trump has not undermined the Fourth Estate, they have done that pretty much by themselves as many have pointed out in countless posts and numerous threads on this forum alone. The Fourth Estate lost it's professionalism many decades past and are just headline grabbers and revenue gatherers. Mr Trump is not going to become a dictator or anything remotely like that, the US has way too many checks and balances for that to happen.

Some citations would still be helpful. I haven't seen particular examples of what you are referring to, other than on Fox news and some other right-wing sites that support Trump anyway. I haven't seen a whole lot of 'headline grabbers and revenue gatherers' in the articles linked here from the Washington Post, New York Times, New Yorker Magazine, Guardian, CNN and others. These particular media do have what is sometimes referred to as a  'liberal bias', but I would not say they have 'lost their professionalism'.

What are some of those 'countless posts and numerous threads' you are referring to? Could you point me to a few of them so I can better understand your claim? At the moment all I am seeing here is more vague, wave-your-arms-in-the-air generalisations that remind me of Trump more than anything else. Either back up your case or quit regurgitating Alt-Right propaganda.
