Christchurch tragedy-related scams and attacks

CERT NZ has received reports of different opportunistic online scams and attacks in the wake of the tragic events in Christchurch last week.

These reports include:
* online donation fraud
* malware embedded in video files
* defacement of NZ websites, and
* denial-of-service.

What's happening / What this means

Scammers and attackers are using the tragic event as an opportunity to perform targeted online cyber attacks against New Zealanders.

In the reports we’ve received, the scams and attacks follow these formats:

* phishing emails containing links to fake online banking logins. These emails also contain fraudulent bank accounts where victims can make donations for the Christchurch tragedy

* sharing malicious video files on compromised websites or on social media. A video file containing footage related to the attack had malware embedded in it and this malicious file is being shared online

* attackers changing New Zealand websites to spread political messages about the Christchurch tragedy

* New Zealand websites receiving threats of denial-of-service attacks, which would take them offline.

There are official channels to donate money to the victims of these tragic events. CERT NZ recommends that anyone wishing to donate seek out official platforms and banks rather than using links in emails or on social media.

If you want violence to stop, it needs to stop completely.

I am shocked by the responses I am seeing. Really.

As a child, did you play doctors and nurses or cowboys and indians? The only thing that has changed is social media.

Is that all that's changed? I don't know. I also don't know about violence in video games, studies I've read about keep reinforcing a line that there's no real evidence of a causative link to violence, despite some pretty horrific examples of alleged correlation. That does surprise me given the level of graphic violence, but it is what it is.

If I was to make a guess, I'd say that the biggest single cause is social isolation - spending all day inside playing an RPG clearly isn't going to help with that. Social media makes me angry/critical about other people sometimes, and because of how it's designed it's the perfect tool from which to recruit and radicalise those who are possibly already susceptible,

I do enjoy going out and doing stuff IRL, we meet some wonderful people from our community. If you smile and say hello, 99.x % will respond in kind.

You are indeed correct. The issue with Social Media is the congregating and amplification of extreme views. Wow oh wow this morning has been interesting too.

It's part of the human male condition perhaps to respond violently to perceived threats, but racism as we have it today was something humanity created, deliberately, and have taught their children how to be racists through generations.

Look at a group of 4 year olds from different races playing together.

Its this type of thing that will create a lifestyle where all of us are ready to dob in anyone displaying any clues of deviance. Ridiculous thought but maybe history books might refer to this as the egg that changed everything. Its up to everyone to learn about what to look for and to be a passive extension of the Police.

My only concern is that we are supporting violence as an action against the MP. Don't get me wrong, what he said was vile, offensive and unacceptable. However egg boy assaulted someone. It absolutely should not have had to come to that for something to happen for what was said - he should have been given the boot from parliament instantly.

I know that he'll end up in front of a judge, and probably be slapped with a wet bus ticket (hopefully at most) but there are an awful lot of people saying "good on you for assaulting someone who said something that you didn't like"

Where does the line get drawn? Or have I missed something here?

There is someone here, who has serious views on free speech and suchlike. Serious views. No, its not the nasty one.

That poster has posted saying that he/she has changed his/her mind to a degree. The serious opinions still stand, but they do not include people who support what the terrorist has done or what he stand for. The MP stands for that. he falls below the bar, rules dont apply. There is a one million petition to oust him, its that quick. I support the rule of law, anti violence, but there is a line that exists and these deviants are below that line. Their need is to destroy society, there cannot be an exemption for that. Thats my personal opinion.

Are you seriously suggesting throwing eggs at them will make it stop?

Law Changes are what is required.

I don't believe it will ever stop all of it, but it will reduce it being expoused in public.

I believe it won't disappear until the generations of people that currently support it are gone, and the new generation where it's hopefully less prevelant become the role models.

The MP should have been ejected from his position and probaby should be facing criminal charges for his comments. That should have been how it was handled.

No slippery slope at all. If I egg you, that is protest. If you punch me in response, that is assault. Anyone who can't make that distinction has no business being in politics or maybe even in civilised society.

That said, you have every right to press charges against me if you don't like being egged. That is what the law is for.

Off course I'm not suggesting we arm people with eggs, don't make it up. Law changes will do nothing, there are already laws for assault and for discrimination

I dont feel the world is worth waiting 25 years to see if it improves. Its getting worse. There is a huge distinction between illegal minor violence, and the violence that is being passively ignored, which is part and parcel of discrimination. Its time to stop it.

The boy was released without charge.

“Police are looking at the footage, and getting witness statements… there were a number of people who had pretty bad behaviour on Saturday,” Police Minister Lisa Neville told 3AW’s Neil Mitchell this morning.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison says Senator Anning should face the full force of the law over his actions.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton also urged voters to dump Senator Anning for his comments on the Christchurch attack.
