kingdragonfly: Iran may now be able to extort "Strait of Hormuz" fees, at the cost of billions in military equipment, and loss of thousands of people and, in Iran, $140 billion in destruction.

A treaty already exists for passage into the Black Sea where Türkiye is acknowledged as the presiding power for commercial and military passage. The short story is military vessels are permitted passage to home port and all other military vessels are currently barred. Yes, there is a charge for commercial traffic. There are no charges for passenger services.

Iran is clearly seeking a treaty or arrangement with some similarities to govern passage in the Hormuz Strait. Ie; All parties must agree or it isn't practical.

The Montreux Convention has survived for nearly 100 years and continues even in the circumstances of the Russia-Ukraine war.

Rikkitic:

So who does do the enforcing? China? India? USA?

I am wanting a way that does not require more war to prevent war.

We are in the insane position of having a US president who considers armed conflict in a country is simply a real-estate deal rather than a fundamental crime against humanity.

Both Israel and Russia are using ancient history as both an excuse and justification for violence, if that is the standard then nowhere is safe.

Is it really better to spend the rest of our lives walking on egg-shells rather than telling countries that their behaviour is unacceptable? Is that the final end-state for humanity that might is right?

If economic sanctions are all we have then that is what we need to use collectively.

If trading oil in yuan or Euros will collapse the petrodollar, then let it be so.

I don’t think anyone is disagreeing with the sentiment but you haven’t answered the question about how to do it.

What is the easy bit, how is far more difficult.

Sometimes a system only fixes itself after a major shock. Charles Dickens Victorian London didn’t clean up its corruption, disease, and pollution until the "Great Stink" made the crisis impossible to ignore. Only then did the city react.

Trump's and his cronies political chaos could finally force long‑avoided reforms. Perhaps the "average-Joe" will now get behind tightening election rules, reducing gerrymandering, increasing transparency around political money, and rethinking the scope of pardon powers. Trump's madness becomes the motivation to clean up the system.
...
But
...
Like an alcoholic attending yet another detox program, crises don’t automatically lead to progress.

Political turmoil can just as easily make things worse. Crises can also produce polarization, apathy, or authoritarian tendencies.

Honestly I don't see Americans supporting reforms mentioned. Just consider that Supreme Justice Samuel Alito cited two medieval English legal treatises as evidence that abortion was historically criminalized.

Some research suggests crises often entrench existing power structures rather than disrupt them.

Things could become much worse much faster especially with emerging risks like AI.

Fiction like "The Metamorphosis of Prime Intellect" is a reminder that not every "wake‑up call" leads to a better outcome.

The Horrifying Utopia of Prime Intellect

Pro-Iran, pro-China professional protest groups launch 'rapid response mass mobilizations'. Far-left network activates to fly Iran's flag over America in victory and wage a 'smokeless war' on the US:

Fox News uncovers dastardly plot against American democracy by people carrying signs and some American guy the video calls the new George Soros. How will American democracy survive this? I don't think it's going to work:

IRGC was doing such a bad job that Trump decided to help them hold the world to ransom.

Waiting for China to send some Frigates to assure passage of its oil.

Could not get worse?

Self sufficiency in energy, 'Who Knew' it might be important.
With most oil rich co-incident with instability.

Thank goodness USA has such 'Stable Geniuses' leading them, Trump, Vance, Hegseth. :-)

Hello gzt, I'm a big fan of yours.

I'm guessing since these are Fox News links, and you use he word "dastardly" you mean treat these with a grain of salt. Sarcasm/satire in posts are often missed.

For pros, the article mentions real protest groups. Neville Roy Singham does lean toward pro-China. They do mention an Gordon Chang.

For cons: Gordon Chang has written books about "China will collapse" multiple time over decades. He is listed among Foreign Policy’s "worst predictions" twice.

Fox News is using guilt by association + narrative inflation: Group A is funded by X, X supports China, therefore Group A is pro-China propaganda.

Any US peace protest attract well-meaning but annoying groups, such as the Party for Socialism and Liberation. Often these groups show up unannounced, and frankly drive the protest organizer crazy by stealing the oxygen from the room

It's painful to watch these "reporters" take a few snapshots of extreme slogans and find the most outrageous looking individual, ignore everyone else, and interview them. The Fox News get their story in a few minutes. Rupert Murdoch would be proud.

Protesters are portrayed as "pro-Iran," "anti-American," "foot soldiers" while many protesters likely see themselves as anti-war, anti-intervention.

Just like family, you can't pick fellow protesters, but you have to live with them. Fox News is occasionally correct, but entertainment for geriatric audience is usually the goal.

Yeah exactly Fox News found a new boogyman to explain everything they don't like. The alleged 'organizer' is likely to be following those people and not the other way around.

Quoting the article above:

"A study published in the Lancet shows that sanctions imposed without UN backing – particularly economic ones – affect mortality rates in targeted countries, and have, on average, been responsible for about half a million deaths each year since the 1970s"

The article advocates security council reform without explaining how it would impact that issue.
