How unusual - a deal that is already done, not yet done. In a war that is not a war, that is already won. And a blockade by a navy that no longer exists.

Edit:

  • US President Donald Trump has announced he is extending the ceasefire with Iran, which was due to expire on Thursday (NZ time).
  • Trump earlier said he was ready to resume bombing if no progress is made in negotiations in Islamabad, Pakistan. “I expect to be bombing” he said.
  • Iran says it is yet to decide whether to send a delegation to Pakistan for talks.
  • Reports say it is not clear if and when US Vice President JD Vance will head to Islamabad for talks.

AlterNet - Trump, Vietnam draft-dodger, says he would have won Vietnam

21 April 2026

A man who received five draft deferments during the Vietnam War went on television this morning to explain that he would have won it.

Trump compared the Iran conflict, now nearly two months old, to the length of other American wars, then announced that he would have won Vietnam quickly had he been president at the time. He did not specify how.

The bone spurs presumably would not have been an issue once he was president.

AlterNet - War Is Hell, and Also Condoms Are 30% More Expensive

The war that was supposed to last six weeks has now touched gas, food, groceries, and, as of this week, condoms.

Karex Bhd., which makes one out of every five condoms worldwide, is preparing to raise its prices by as much as 30% as the continuing conflict destabilizes supply chains and drives up expenses.

Don't forget that the Strait is totally open to everyone and there is a total ceasefire, except for Iranian ships which the US will continue to fire upon and seize anywhere in the world.

Yeah. Ignoring the political and military woes of Iran/US and Israel. Iran blocked the Strait as a war strategy. Ceasefire happens, Iran unblocks the Strait so Trump blocks it for Iran. Hardly a recipe for what is already a difficult negotiation

Both sides have been using the word 'open' with an entirely new meaning.

A bit like OpenAI that's closed source, Open Hormuz is effectively closed due to 'conditions'.

Though apparently 26 shadow fleet ships did get through while one freighter got seized.

I'm guessing that certain Chinese ships with Chinese crews will not be hindered,
as USA may not want China turning up to protect its ships from USA.

If your plumber unblocked your toilet as well as either IRGC or USA have done for Hormuz?

The Washington Post - Iran talks to resume this weekend without Vance

breaking

A U.S. delegation will resume talks with Iran in Islamabad, Pakistan, this weekend but this time without Vice President JD Vance, the lead negotiator.

After Vance led a delegation there earlier this month that took part in more than 20 hours of negotiations on the ground, the White House this time said talks will be led by special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Donald Trump’s son-in-law who has taken part in past negotiations.

The decision not to send Vance, U.S. officials say, reflects the lower level of these talks after the last trip failed to result in a deal. ...

Can presidents sack vice-presidents? Just asking.  🤔

So rather than send experienced negotiators well versed in the history and politics of Iran Trump sends a couple of grifters more interested in doing deals to fatten their bank accounts. Not that Vance was any better equipped to be leading the negotiations.

It beggars belief sending two Jewish guys who I'd hazard a guess are Zionist supporters is in anyway a smart idea. What kind of message does that send to the Iranian regime?

But. But. Earlier this week Trump said JD was in the air on the way to the negotiations.

Was he lying?

In one way it does not matter who Trump sends as negotiators.
Trump, Vance and Cabinet have created an impossible position now Iran has 'all the cards'.

Its not going back to the way it was.

There is little reason for theocratic dictatorship to back down.
The supreme leader has had most of his family killed by USA.
I daresay any likely supreme leader replacement and IRGC leadership has had similar.

They have seen their power where a small drone or speedboat is enough to hold world to randsom.
Ballistic missiles and larger drones safely protected behind collapsed tunnel entrances.
Just dig em out when you need em.

Avenues via Russia and countries adjacent to China for further supplies via north east of Iran.
Have not heard of USA attacking any of the Russian Caspian Sea trade.
China and Russia would absolutely not want to see any change in Iran to a free democracy more west friendly.

Unless Trump is going for: Iran drip feed tollgate, reparations, they keep enriched uranium and nuclear program?

It's new normal for the world.
I expect parties are rewriting their polices for the new world if they are smart for our election

Madder than Mad King George. America has not just its King , it has its Mad King.

I suspect more that he lost track of which version they were up to. From what I've read I don't think anyone in the US administration really knew what option was current.

Note, I said what option not what plan as I don't think there has ever been a plan.  Donny has been quoted as saying he will feel it in his bones when the war will end. Kind of indicates there’s no plan in place.

It's ok, guys, no need to worry. Nobody is going to Pakistan. Apparently Trump is trying a new tactic, called "having a plan".

He says nothing has changed in recent days, and the US delegation was not going to travel that far "without a plan".

"Too much travelling, takes too long, too expensive. I'm a very cost conscious person", he adds.

Oh, and also it's really expensive to fly to Pakistan. You know, I've noticed that lately too. I wonder what's causing it? I guess we'll never know.

EDIT: seems Trump has other important duties to attend to as well as the war he started which is tanking the global economy:

Those of us in the press pool are waiting just outside the gates to President Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort on a hot and sunny day here in Florida.

We expect to see him for the first time today when we board Air Force One with him in the next few hours.

Trump is currently attending a cryptocurrency event at Mar-a-Lago, where he is scheduled to speak. But he’s also been busy fielding calls and confirming to various media outlets his decision to cancel his team's planned trip to Islamabad.

The plan is probably winning more golf tournaments, stealing more of the nation's wealth.

Given we are 10 years in from Trump's easy cheap healthcare plan, still a concept.

Expecting hard men of religion to just back down.
While feeling more powerful on a global stage than ever before.
They know what's waiting for them should regime change.

Surprising Trump in similar jeopardy does not see it.
If fantasy was a plan?

It's more 'new normal' for the world.

I daresay without the large flows of capital the states in the region will be pulling back some of their global investments.
Maybe Ai datacenter cash and resource grab will end?

Trump may just go schmoozing with other Kings, and golfing.
Leave it for the next King to deal with after he has passed.

I am going to be a devil's advocate and suggest taking a leaf out of "Disaster Capitalism", eg never let a good crisis go to waste.

Let's say you knew that no deal between USA and Iran was going to made (a) before 20 January 2029 or (b) ever. What would you do now, and imagine looking forward to when it is 2029, what would you wish that you had done?

A path to getting to that state would be for Trump to get bored and conveniently forget that he was ever against forever wars, and by simply not talking/Truthing about it falls into the background in the US as old news and the mutual blockades remain.

But the impact would remain for the rest of the world, but that is not part of the MAGA world.

I suggest that the countries that did best out of COVID were those that took it seriously in the first instances, rather than playing a wait and see or letting the markets sort it out.

If actions were taken now would they have the additional benefit of aiding meeting the emissions targets for 2050? Is this the kick in the arse we desperately needed?

I'm pretty sure that won't happen, if only because the logistics of that are for the USN horrifying.

It would continuously pin a USN Carrier Strike Group in the North Indian Ocean / Arabian sea.
With the Gulf ports unavailable, it would have to be supported from Diego Garcia, and DG would have to be supported around the cape of Good Hope from the continental USA. I don't think that the USN has enough sea-lift and/or tanker capacity for that to be supportable for another three or so years, and if they can find enough, it will be eye-wateringly expensive.

Even if the USN could afford to resource this, it would very significantly reduce their capacity to respond to any issues elsewhere in the world
