Just an observation, but this is a huge thread to discuss someone who is in charge of another country, whom we cannot vote for, influence or affect.

Does it serve any purpose other than a general whinge fest and echo chamber? Surely it must be time to move on by now.

There is a button at the bottom labelled 'unwatch topic'. Use it.

I'm aware of the button. I'm merely curious as to why people are still whining and moaning about something far beyond their control so long after the fact....

I understand change is hard and if this thread was because Winston Peters was now PM, I could see why it was going on so much.

We don't have a long thread about Vladimir Putin who is equally capable of affecting the world, if not more so - for example.

Trump is POTUS whether we like it or not. It makes no difference what we think - not so much as a scintilla to be honest. Just seems like a waste of energy.

Because what this clown POTUS does matters to more than just the USA and is of immense interest to many across the globe - myself included.

So even though we can't change it, we can still discuss him and his actions and share our views ......you know, like a discussion forum...

So if the "whining and moaning" bothers you so much - please push the unwatch button.

But how much can you essentially recycle the same thing before it ceases to be 'discussion' and just becomes a whinge-fest?

Personally I'd be more worried about Putin and his cabal of lawless billionaires who have very little in the way of political checks and balances. Not as popular as moaning about Trump I suppose.

I agree. Trump has a few points of discussion

1. His manner, sordid past, lies, etc, we can call him names for that, and justifiably so.

2. His effect on the world, and NZ.

One of these is on every page, the other is rare.

I have repeated myself a few times on my opinion as you have commented on. But I dont need any more reminders how he is a liar, corrupt, and all the other adjectives, we get it. But that is the vast majority of this thread.

I wasn't going after you but you have made the point several times that you don't consider Trump a serious problem because he is so incompetent and surrounded by checks and balances. I think anyone following this thread must know that is how you feel by now, just as they will know that Fred99 thinks he is a liar. I was just wondering if you had anything other than that to say about him. I take the point you are making but I continue to be concerned that in spite of the checks and balances, Trump (or those around him) has the potential to seriously undermine what is left of American democracy and to do real damage to the world. Like you, I think he is a buffoon. Unlike you, I am not convinced he is harmless.

The point about Putin is a good one. I'm not sure what the difference is, except maybe that no-one expects any better from Russia but those who are not Trump supporters are shocked that it can also happen to America. Maybe it also has to do with the decades of American preaching to the rest of the world about human rights and justice for all and how America is the morally superior beacon of freedom and hope and all that other stuff that Trump is busy dismantling.

So the button at the end of this page for me only says 'watch' as I never clicked it so can't 'u watch'....

Where's the 'unparticipate' button to remove it from the column in my GZ live page?

I don;t think those things are meant to be plans. They're meant to be smokescreens, distractions.
Meanwhile, Trump guts the EPA, puts a union-breaker in charge of Labor Relations and no one so much as notices.

He is damaging the US internally, although having said that, he hasn't really done anything that is serious and has or will come into effect. I honestly think the world has seen enough not to be overly worried. Until something actually comes to pass, it seems treading water for another 3.5 years

I'm not at all swayed by the opinion that "he" is a harmless buffoon.  I put "he" in inverted commas, because IMO Trump isn't the primary threat - he lacks the intellect and cunning of leaders like Putin and Hitler, but he's surrounded himself with people who have a common goal to "fight back" against "liberalism" as something threatening to their greedy, selfish, authoritarian way of life.

It's lunacy to suggest that "it's a US problem - it won't affect us".

Whatever happens in the US has profound effects on our way of life, be that through formal US foreign or domestic policies, or influence on attitudes / popular culture - for the past 60 or 70 years.  Sometimes we love them, sometimes we hate them - but we do in many ways "follow" the "leader".

I can agree that the Trump regime hasn't achieved much - yet.  In some ways, because his regime's methods and tactics are so blatantly transparent and supported by such obvious huge lies, I get the feeling that it's acting against the agenda of conservative authoritarianism.  The conservatives pushed a message that really drove a wedge through the heart of social liberals for the past few decades, divide and conquer.  It's so nice to see them get a dose of their own medicine.

I expected him to do stuff, not surprised if much of that was watered down, but he has been shackled. So has his little party of other idiots. Until he manages to pass a law that does have real effects, I'm unconvinced. I would not have picked that he will be hamstrung by the GOP and the judiciary to the level that has happened, which is a good thing. His tax cuts are rumoured to be in tatters. Next has to be his trade issue, where he will place a 15% tariff on imported goods, that will clearly affect us all. IF it happens. If it does, the US joe average will pay the tariff in terms of increased prices. So I doubt that will go far as well. Another issue is involvement in hotspots, again, all talk.

I see all the points of concern, but I am really surprised that his ability to implement any of this policies has been so problematic. Until he can do something that affects us all, in a small or larger way, he remains a harmless buffoon. He is harming the US, but as its one man and his cronies, and temporary, and he isn't causing financial and military harm, it increasingly becomes treading water till 2021. Maybe sooner given what he has achieved in just two months.

He is not a harmless buffoon.

He is a very dangerous leader and is meant to be the most powerful man in the western world. He is teaching the worlds children and others dumb enough to believe that lying constantly is OK.

He is teaching us that a free press is bad for us and all they print is lies.

He is teaching us that rudeness to others is fine including people who have done great public service eg Obama, Merkel (despite their politics).

He is teaching us that global warming is a myth.

etcetc

I have no idea how the worlds school teachers are handling this...

From the UK Independent

"Donald Trump six months before Mike Flynn offer: 'If you're not guilty of a crime, what do you need immunity for?'

Resurfaced footage appears to contradict President's tweeted advice to his former adviser.

Donald Trump called gaining immunity from prosecution 'so corrupt' and and an 'embarrassment'—six months before urging his former national security adviser to seek the same protection.

Mr Trump was speaking to supporters at a rally in Melbourne, Florida, last year when he said of Democratic staff being given immunity in the investigation into Hillary Clinton's emails: 'Have you ever seen anything so corrupt in your life? Have you ever seen a greater embarrassment to our country?

'If you're not guilty of a crime, what do you need immunity for?”

The September 2016 footage appears to contradict his advice to Michael Flynn, handed down on Twitter on Friday, that he 'should ask for immunity' during the 'witch-hunt' investigation into links between Russia and his Presidential campaign.

Mr Flynn, who resigned after less than a month in post over undisclosed contact with a Russian diplomat, reportedly offered to testify in exchange for being protected from prosecution."
